4INSTALLATION MANUAL GENERAL SAFETY INFORMATION b The system is delivered in separate crates. Check that it is complete, undamaged and as ordered as soon as you receive it. Report any discrepancies or damage to the dealer who sold it. b This system must be installed by a legally qualified heating engineer. (In Italy, the law regulating professional heating engineers is Law 46 of the 5th March 990.) On completion of the installation, the installer must issue the owner with a declaration of conformity confirming that the installation has been completed to the highest standards in compliance with the instructions provided by BERETTA in this instruction manual, and that it conforms to all applicable laws and standards. b The system must only be used for the purpose specified by BERETTA and for which it is designed. The manufacturer declines all responsibility, contractual or other, for damage to property or injury to persons or animals caused by improper installation, adjustment, maintenance or use. b If you notice any water or other liquid leaking from the solar heating circuit, disconnect the system immediately from the mains electricity supply, shut off the water supply, and notify BERETTA's Technical Assistance Service or a qualified heating engineer immediately. b The liquid in the solar heating circuit can reach VERY HIGH TEMPERATURES, in excess of 50 C. Beware of burns. b Only use the anti-freeze liquid provided by BERETTA to fill and top up the system. BERETTA anti-freeze contains nontoxic, biodegradable and environmentally friendly propylene glycol, and is specially designed for use in solar water heating systems. b Make sure that the water-glycol mix in the primary circuit is able to resist the minimum temperatures likely to occur in the place of installation (e.g.: 40% glycol resists freezing down to -20 C). b The system must be serviced at least once a year. b Make sure that the roof is strong enough to support the weight of the system when filled with water. Also make sure that the section of roof chosen for the installation is at a suitable angle to the sun (south facing or at a maximum angle of 45 to the southeast or south-west), and not shaded during the day by tall plants, trees, other houses, mountains, etc. b Insulate the domestic hot water pipes (hot and cold) with suitable material for local conditions. In particularly cold climates, insulate all externally mounted accessories. In areas subject to severe frosts, configure the system so that the pipes can be drained if the system is not used during the winter months. b If the system is installed in an area subject to strong winds or gusts, secure it at suitable points. If necessary, tie down the storage cylinder and solar collectors with metal straps and install supporting brackets at the sides. b Make sure that snow cannot build up behind the storage cylinder since this could place unacceptable static strain on the roof. b The installation of a natural circulation solar water heating system modifies the existing structure of the roof. With certain types of roof, especially those over converted lofts, it may be necessary to adopt additional precautionary measures to prevent water from infiltrating the roof in windy or snowy conditions. b Use a suitable sling to lift and move the solar collector. The collector must not be lifted by its fittings. Avoid subjecting the collector to impacts or mechanical strain, and take care to protect the glass panel. a Never attempt to install solar collectors on roofs without ensuring that all applicable standards governing safety at work are met first. a Never install solar collectors on roofs without an adequate lightning protection system. a Never install the system without providing a suitable drain for the solar heating circuit's safety valve. a Never clean or service the system without first disconnecting it from the mains electricity supply by turning the main power switch and the control panel switch OFF. a Do not tamper with or adjust the safety or control devices without prior authorisation and instructions from the manufacturer. a Never stop circulation in the solar heating by means of valves or cocks. a Do not dispose of packaging material into the environment, or leave it within the reach of children, since it can become a potential hazard. Dispose of packaging material in compliance with applicable legislation.

2 DESCRIPTION OF THE SYSTEM 2. Description The N-SOL is a natural circulation, domestic water heating system for single homes, designed for installation on flat or sloping roofs. It comes with all the parts necessary for a complete installation, including all the accessories required for a quick start-up: - solar collector/s - solar storage cylinder with heating jacket - mounting frame for collector/s and storage cylinder - connections between the solar collector/s and the storage cylinder, complete with nonreturn valve and safety valve - anti-freeze liquid (accessory). 2.2 Safety devices The system is equipped with the following safety devices: - A primary circuit safety valve that opens if pressure in the primary circuit rises above a 2.5 bar threshold. - A secondary circuit safety valve that opens if pressure in the secondary circuit rises above a 0 bar / 99 C threshold. b Water may come out of the primary and secondary circuit safety valves as a result of variations in temperature and pressure during the course of the day. Make sure that there is a suitable drain for any water coming from these valves. b The operation of a safety device indicates a potentially dangerous malfunction in the system, and means that you must contact BERETTA s Technical Assistance Service immediately. 5 b Safety devices must only be replaced by BERETTA s Technical Assistance Service using original spare parts. b Over-temperature protection requires an adequate supply of cold water.

Dispose of packaging material in compliance with applicable legislation. b Wear suitable personal protective equipment and use suitable safety devices. Fig. 3.7

3.4 Preparing for installation Before you start assembling the solar water heating system, check: - hat the contents are all present and undamaged - that the roof is strong enough to support the weight and that there are no leaks - the best possible orientation of the solar collectors (ideally facing south). Avoid locating collectors in the shadow of tall trees, etc. - that the installation surface is stable. Remove any gravel and similar material. b Replace any defective parts immediately, using only manufacturer s original spare parts. > m > m b Arrange for any major roof repairs, especially bitumen waterproofing, to be performed by specialists. Fig. 3.8 Before commencing installation, make sure that there is a minimum distance of one metre between the mounting frame and the edge of the flat roof. 5 b The above measurements only indicate the net width required for the assembled collectors. Allow at least another 0.5 metres to the right and left of the assembled collectors for the necessary piping. b Keep the left of the storage cylinder some 0 to 20 mm higher than to the right to facilitate bleeding. When installing the collector parallel to a sloping roof, use the adjuster nuts on the roof fixing brackets. (See the relevant instructions.) ~ 0-20 mm Fig. 3.9

INSTALLATION MANUAL Assembly GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS Instructions for assembly The system must be installed by specialist personnel. Use only the assembly material supplied. The supporting framework and all masonry or brickwork fixing points must be checked by a person expert in static loading, and must be suitable for the nature of the installation site. Static load The system must only be installed on roofs or frames that are strong enough to support its weight. The static load capacity of the roof or any supporting structure must be verified on site prior to the installation of the system. Take special care to make sure that the roof timbers are suitable for the fixing screws of the natural circulation solar water heating system. The constructor of the roof structure must verify that the roof conforms to all applicable laws and standards in the country of installation, especially in areas subject to heavy snowfall or strong winds (note: m³ of dry snow weighs ~ 60 kg / m³ of wet snow weighs ~ 200 kg). When installing systems in such areas, all weather features that might add to the strain on the roof must be taken into consideration (Foehn effect, funnel effect, vortex formation, etc.). Water connections Water connections must conform to DIN standards 988 and (Also respect all applicable national standards!) All unused fittings must be plugged. The operating pressure limits specified on the data plate must never be exceeded. It may prove necessary to fit a pressure reducer. It is essential to fit the storage cylinder with the safety valve provided to limit overpressure in the water circuit. A thermal mixing valve must always be connected to the hot water outlet to control water temperature in the DHW circuit. Flushing and filling For safety reasons, fill the system either when the sun is not shining or after having covered the collectors. Always fill the storage tank with domestic water before filling the solar heating circuit. Use a 25% anti-freeze to water solution, especially in areas at risk of frost. b The anti-freeze solution must be mixed with water prior to filling the system. Indication: 25% anti-freeze solution --> freezing point: -0 C Lightning protection / building potential compensation It is generally not necessary to connect natural circulation systems to the building s lightning protection system. (Make sure, however, that you conform to all relevant national standards!) If you are installing a system over a metallic roof frame, consult an authorised lightning protection specialist. The metal piping of the solar heating circuit must be connected to the main potential compensation bar by a (yellow-green) copper wire (H07 V-U or R) of at least 6 mm2. Alternatively, the solar collector piping may be connected to ground via a ground wire sunk into the earth. This ground wire must be routed outside the building. The ground wire must be connected to the potential compensation bar through a wire of the same diameter. Solar panel connections The collectors must be connected to each other and to the connecting pipes by means of a lock ring connection. Use a grip or wrench to hold the fixed part of the union steady while tightening the pipe union, to avoid damaging the absorber. Make sure that the pipes connecting the collector to the hot water storage cylinder always slope upwards. It is essential to fit the safety valve provided to limit overpressure in the solar water heating circuit. It may not be possible to completely empty the collectors once filled. For this reason, in areas at risk of freezing, the collectors must be filled with a solution of water and anti-freeze even for functioning and pressure tests. Operating pressure Maximum operating pressure for the solar water heating circuit is 2.5 bar, while that for the DHW circuit is 0 bar. Bleeding Bleed the system at the following intervals: - On start-up (after initial filling) - 4 weeks after start-up - Whenever necessary, as in the event of system malfunctioning. b The heat transfer liquid can be hot! Risk of scalding! Only open the vent valve if the temperature of the fluid in the circuit is below 60 C. Make sure that the collectors are cold before you bleed the circuit. Cover the solar collectors before bleeding the circuit. Perform bleeding in the morning if possible.

Assembling the frame b Two persons are needed to assemble the system in its entirety. Follow the instructions provided with the mounting frame to assemble it. INSTALLATION ON A FLAT ROOF N-SOL 50/ - 200/ N-SOL 300/2 7 INSTALLATION ON A SLOPING ROOF N-SOL 50/ - 200/ N-SOL 300/2 Fig. 3.0
