13 Other Products There are other systems involved in making pulp and paper that are not directly related to the actual making of paper. Water is a huge part of the pulp and papermaking process. Influent or incoming water must be contained, controlled and introduced to the process. On the other end, effluent or outgoing water cannot be directly released or used so it has to be controlled, recirculated, disposed of, or treated. Additionally, many paper mills have their own in-house powerhouses. These powerhouses burn fines and sludge from the effluent, depending on the paper process. 14 Success Stories in the Paper Industry Recycle with Rovalve Products Recognizing the coming need for increased use of recycled paper and the resulting complications in valving, Rovalve developed several products specifically designed for the rigors of the application. Recycling, or secondary fiber recovery, is not new to the paper industry. It used to mean broke and other preconsumer waste paper, but now it involves a lot more than that. Today, you are called upon to use newspapers, magazines, corrugated board, office papers, milk cartons and other post consumer waste. These contaminated secondary fibers create new problems for you when separating the potential pulp from a wide variety of contaminants. Wires, staples, banding, glues, sand, clays, inks, dirt and rocks are just a few examples of the contaminants that must be dealt with. Each of these can create havoc with the final finished paper product, and the processing equipment it is made from. Tyco, with the Rovalve product line, has a complete line of tough, wear resistant valve products. These specialty knife gate and slide gate valves can handle most anything that gets dumped in to the pulper. The Figure 12-SF features a replaceable hardened seat and special downstream port; the Figure 215-SF slide gate offers a slide through design to help prevent jamming; the double gated Figure 415-SF is especially good for extra heavy junk and pulp; the resilient seated SB1700 provides a tight low pressure seal. Proven in application after application, in new or existing systems of varying manufacturers, these valves will provide you long life in a service that will tear through conventional valve designs. Vanessa in Liquor Applications Liquor applications are very demanding for most any valve product used. Aggressive chemical environments, difficult viscosities, and high cycles add up to make things challenging for a valve. Fortunately, the Vanessa Rotary Process Triple Offset Butterfly valve is well suited for liquor applications. In green liquor, an automated Vanessa 30,000 is subjected to an excess of 168,000 cycles per year and still provides bubble tight shut-off. Considering the problems associated with green liquor, particularly the potential for media buildup within the valve, this is quite an accomplishment. The Vanessa 30,000 is also well suited for lime mud and steam applications with examples lasting over ten years. 15 Success Stories in the Paper Industry Anderson Greenwood Pilot Operated Pressure Relief Valve - Increase Paper Production For over 20 years, the Anderson Greenwood Type 526 Pilot Operated Pressure Relief Valve has been the preferred product for use on the dryer section of the paper machine. It is used to protect the drums, while allowing the steam pressure to be as high as 95% of set pressure. The result is increased paper production. The Type 526 is a unique soft seated safety relief valve designed to handle higher temperatures. It was created with a specific design objective: to decrease the leakage associated with conventional metal seated safety relief valves under extreme operating temperatures and pressure. This superior design allows the operator to increase the steam pressure at the dryer, resulting in higher temperatures and putting more heat into the dryer. This dries the paper faster, allowing higher run speeds and increasing paper production. In the event of a paper break, the modulating action of the 526 will hold the steam pressure in the drum at the set pressure, allowing immediate production once the machine is back on-line. Other benefits of the Type 526 include: Reduced Product Loss and Pollution. Soft seats for premium tightness before and after relief cycles. All Plastic Soft Goods. There are no elastomer seats or seals, providing additional chemical compatibility with the lading fluid. Increased System Output. Because of total valve tightness to at least 95 percent of set pressure, the system can be operated nearer to set pressure without valve leakage. The result is greater system production capability. Reduced Maintenance Costs. Resilient seats greatly extend service life. Costly and time consuming metal seat lapping is unnecessary. Balanced Design. Proper valve operation and lift are unaffected by back pressure. Costly and fragile metal bellows are not required. ASME Section VIII Stamp. Certified National Board capacities for steam, gases, and liquids assures user of independent third party flow rate verification. Unique Field Test Capability. Allows accurate set pressure verification with valve in service. No system isolation valve or rupture disc is required. Single indicator button is available for accurate and easy verification of set pressure. Reduced Noise. Modulating action minimizes flow and resultant noise during normal system upset, reducing noise abatement costs. Ease of Adjustment. Adjustment for set pressure allows accurate and dependable setting. 13

In many processes, this is accomplished by either continuous or batch digesters. The digesters are used to break down the fibers using chemicals, heat and steam pressure, dissolving the binding lignite. The result is moved to the blow tank under pressure, which further separates the lignite from the fiber. Before the pulp can be made into paper, it needs to go through Stock Prep. Stock prep is the interim stage between the pulping and papermaking processes. In stock prep, pulp fiber is diluted and additives are combined to produce furnish suitable for the final paper product. Medias include water, white water, stock, steam and chemical additives. Chemicals and additives such as starch, clay, talc and calcium carbonate give additional properties to the paper or enhance the papermaking process. Some are added during stock prep, but others are blended right before or after the paper machine. These additives must be stored, transferred and applied as required by the type of paper being produced. Additionally, paper machines must extract water from the pulp. This water must be collected, directed and eventually treated and recirculated. Many paper machines have repulpers built below them. These are used to salvage broke or waste paper from the process.
