2 Pioneers of Ozone Prozone pioneered the original Very Ultra Violet ozone generator cartridge in 1977 for the swimming pool and spa industry. Since then, Prozone has developed and engineered full systems, integrating its innovative ozonator designs into applications such as swimming pools, spas, water parks, aqua cultures, cooling towers, and drinking water. Prozone s simplicity and effectiveness have become the industry standard for low-cost and easily implemented ozone systems. Attention to customer requirements has produced uncompromising innovations in product performance, reliability, and ruggedness. Prozone has innovated developments in flat plate, air cooled, high frequency corona discharge ozone generators, cold plasma discharge ozonator design and has pioneered advanced bypass contactor systems (patented), air separation systems (patent pending), static mixers, and dynamic injectors. Contact systems first introduced and patented by Prozone are now the industry standard. Prozone also pioneered development of the patented Bypass Conductor System, Dynamic Injector, and the Mycropore Diffuser. Prozone s Bypass Contactor Systems combined with the Dynamic Injector provide the ultimate in mixing and ozone absorption while operating in conjunction with the existing circulation system. The exclusive stainless steel Mycropore Diffuser operates independently from the existing circulation system. The diffuser provides excellent mass transfer and absorption by continuously injecting tiny ozone bubbles into the water.

3 OZONATION OF POOLS AND SPAS WHAT IS OZONE? Ozone is a form of energetic oxygen that has three atoms of oxygen rather than the normal two. Oxygen = 0 2 Ozone = 0 3 The extra oxygen atom makes ozone very reactive and is what gives it its strength as a disinfectant and oxidant. Ozone is synergistic with bromine and chlorine Does not produce harmful by-products

4 OZONATION OF POOLS AND SPAS EFFECTS OF OZONATION Oxidation Ozone reacts with bather loading and combined halogens Reduces contaminants to inert compounds or carbon dioxide and water Oxidizes Combined Halogens Precipitation Ozone removes metals (iron, manganese, zinc, copper, etc.) Oxidized organics also precipitate Filtration and clarification are enhanced by precipitation Sanitation/Disinfection Ozone is the most powerful disinfectant available Rapidly kills bacteria and viruses

5 Ozone as Oxidizer Ozone reduces bather loading by precipitating inert compounds which are removed by filtration Replaces halogens (chlorine or bromine) as the primary oxidizer and prevents the formation of combined halogens Ozone oxidation reduces the amount of chlorine or bromine required to maintain the pool

6 Why is Oxidation Important? Chlorine and Bromine are neutralized by bather loading - Ozone reactivates them Bather loading can prevent sanitizers from attacking microorganisms by providing a protective coating - Ozone destroys protection Bather loading provides the nutrients required by microorganisms to reproduce and grow - Ozone removes them from water Destruction of volatile chemicals

7 OZONE AND ALGAE Ozone controls algae indirectly by removing bather load Ozone cleans water in the return, not the pool- Brush regularly to get algae in the water Chlorine and ozone are recommended for best performance Location near trees, vegetation, farms, etc. can have impact on algae growth

27 Degassing Column The Prozone degassing column removes excess air after the water is ozonated to prevent bubbles from entering the pool. The unit consists of a column with an air vent attached to the top. Excess air is removed by using the natural buoyancy of bubbles and a counter flow design which allows for the removal of 99% of injected air.

30 PZ2 Repair Guide Problem Possible Causes Action Compressor Low or no air flow (air flow can be checked with a meter) Damaged Diaphragm Dirty Filter Remove diaphragm cover (round metal plate on top of compressor) and check for cracks or visual damage.replace if damaged. Clean Filter. Filter is located below the diaphragm. Wash filter with water or blow off dirt with air Broken Rod Thermal Overload Contact Prozone. Unit will not pump and may make excessive noise. Verify fan is working and unit is not installed by a heat source. Replace diaphragm if damaged.

31 Problem Possible Causes Action Lamp Lamp Does Not Light PZ2 Repair Guide Loose Wiring Lamp Burned Out Check all wiring connections. Connect cartridge to a test ballast. If lamp does not light, replace lamp cartridge after testing ballast Ballast Failure Connect lamp to a test lamp cartridge. If lamp does not light, replace ballast. Note: Lamps are not replaceable. Dispose of failed lamp cartridge.

Check venturi check valve is operating properly. Water in Ozone Generator Lamp Flickers Installation Below Waterline Excessive Back pressure Check Valve Failure Installed Below Waterline Low voltage or Bad Lamp Pressure exceeds compressor capability. Increase compressor size. Attached chart shows maximum head pressure unit can operate against. Open jets or floor cleaners if possible. If this does not work a larger compressor, separate ozone venturi line may be required. Verify check valve in venturi and in supply line are in working order. If installation is more than 3-4 feet below the waterline, replace two inch check valve with a solenoid valve. Check supply voltage with voltmeter. If supply is less than 208 V. contact factory. If voltage is okay, replace lamp cartridge/ballast.

34 PZ7 Repair Guide Problem Possible Causes Action Lamp Lamp Does Not Light Loose Wiring Lamp Burned Out Ballast Failure Check all wiring connections. Connect lamp to a test ballast. If lamp does not light, replace lamp assembly after testing ballast. Connect lamp to a test lamp assembly. If lamp does not light, replace ballast. Note:PZ7 Lamps are replaceable.

Plumbing has Multiple Elbows, Valves or other Devices after Venturi Water in Ozone Generator Inadequate Filter Pressure Installation Below Water Line Excessive Back pressure Check Venturi for Blockage of Debris May create gurgling sounds or large bubbles in the return Check Valve Failure Installation Below Water Line Check filter, repair if necessary. Pressure at venturi exceeds operating limit. Move venturi as close to waterline as possible. If this does not work, a change to a compressor system may be required. Open eyeball valves or floor cleaners if possible. Otherwise try switching venturis (884 to 784) If this does not work, a change to a compressor system may be required. Remove debris. Pz2 may be required Verify check valve in venturi is operating correctly.
