1 BIOACT * SC-22 Electronics Cleaner For Stencil/Misprint Cleaning and Defluxing Description BIOACT SC-22 Cleaner is a partially water-soluble, propylene glycol etherbased cleaning agent formulated to remove solder pastes and uncured SMD adhesives from stencils and misprints. It also works well in cleaning reflowed flux residues from assemblies. SC-22 Cleaner has a relatively high flash point (>140 F/60 C) and very low vapor pressure. Depending on the cleaning application, the product is used concentrated or diluted in water (emulsion) in suitable non-aqueous, semi-aqueous and aqueous/emulsion cleaning equipment. SC-22 Cleaner is ideal for customers who want to (1) improve cleaning of uncured SMD adhesive from stencils and misprints, (2) clean several different types of solder pastes and uncured SMD adhesives in one process, (3) use a higher flash point (>140 F/60 C) cleaning agent, or (4) replace potentiallycorrosive organic and inorganic saponifiers in defluxing applications. 2 Stencil/Misprint Cleaning Applications SC-22 Cleaner is considered the most powerful BIOACT product for removing uncured SMD adhesives. Use SC-22 diluted in water (emulsified) when cleaning water-soluble pastes and/or to improve odor and drying rates. Table 3. The concentrated product is used at ambient temperature and should be mechanically agitated (ultrasonics, spray-under-immersion, or spray-in-air) for best results. Typical SC-22 Concentrate Process 1. Wash stencils/misprints in SC-22 concentrate. 2. Rinse (optional) the residual SC-22 Cleaner with dissolved pastes and SMD adhesives. SC-22 Cleaner works quickly at ambient temperatures (no heat required). Dwell time is usually 2-5 minutes. SC-22 Cleaner rinses easily with ambient temperature water. Rinse water temperatures should not exceed 130 F/54 C. 3. Dry stencils/misprints. To remove residual SC-22 Cleaner or water, use any appropriate method: dry forced air, oven, fan, centrifugal force, hand wipe, or other. Typical SC-22 Aqueous/Emulsion Process Aqueous/Emulsion Cleaning - Diluted SC-22 Cleaner may be used in suitable solvent and aqueous stencil cleaning equipment. No heat is required. Mechanical agitation, such as ultrasonics or spray-under-immersion, will accelerate the cleaning process. Appropriately designed spray-in-air equipment is also acceptable. 1. 3 Defluxing Applications Process Use concentrated SC-22 Cleaner to remove baked-on rosin and no-clean flux residues. Diluted SC-22 Cleaner is recommended for water-soluble defluxing however it also works well in removing many rosin and no-clean flux and paste residues. Concentrate Cleaning - Concentrated product should be used only in metal semi-aqueous equipment. Mechanical agitation, such as ultrasonics or sprayunder-immersion, and heat will accelerate the cleaning process. Appropriately designed spray-in-air equipment is also acceptable since the product does not foam. Typical SC-22 Cleaner Concentrate Process 1. Wash assemblies in SC-22 concentrate. The wash bath should be heated to ~120 F/49 C. Dwell time is usually 5-10 minutes. 2. Rinse the residual SC-22 Cleaner with dissolved flux from assemblies. SC-22 Cleaner rinses easily with ambient temperature or slightly heated (120 F F /49 C - 60 C) water. 3. Dry assemblies. To remove residual water, use any appropriate method: dry forced air, oven, fan, centrifugal force, hand wipe, or other. Aqueous/Emulsion Cleaning - Diluted SC-22 Cleaner may be used in plastic or metal equipment. Mechanical agitation, such as ultrasonics or spray-underimmersion, and heat will accelerate the cleaning process. Appropriately designed spray-in-air equipment is also acceptable since the product is low foaming. Wash bath dilutions range from 20%-30% active in water. Typical SC-22 Cleaner Aqueous/Emulsion Process 1. Wash assemblies in a 20-30% concentration of SC-22 Cleaner in water. 2. Rinse the residual SC-22 emulsion with dissolved flux from assemblies. The wash bath should be heated to 140 F/60 C. Dwell time is usually 2-5 minutes. SC-22 Cleaner rinses easily with ambient temperature or slightly heated (120 F F /49 C - 60 C) water. 3. The local governing authority determines sewerability of the material. Carbon adsorption can be used to remove SC-22 Cleaner from wastewater. Stencil/Misprint Cleaning - After normal use, the SC-22 bath will become contaminated or "loaded" with solids from solder paste and/or SMD adhesive residues. As loading increases, cleaning performance decreases. Either an oily film or visible solids will be left behind on the stencil after drying indicating the bath has lost its cleaning effectiveness. Depending on the amount of paste or adhesive being cleaned from stencils and misprints, the typical bath life for SC-22 Cleaner ranges from 2 weeks to 8 weeks. Defluxing - It is recommended that "solids or flux loading" in the SC-22 bath be monitored routinely using two common test methods. Specific Gravity: Using the specific gravity procedure and rosin loading chart developed for this product, an approximate loading level can be determined. Refractive Index: The refractive index may be ascertained in the same manner. After normal use, the SC-22 bath will become contaminated or loaded with solids from flux residues and other organic residues. As loading increases, cleaning performance decreases. Customers are encouraged to establish a cleanliness standard and then monitor cleanliness levels using ionic contamination, surface insulation resistance, electromigration or other analytical methods. 5 Bath Disposal Petroferm recommends contacting your current or local environmental service company for disposal of SC-22 concentrate via fuel blending. This method has proven to be the easiest, most cost effective way to dispose of the spent Petroferm cleaning agents. Disposal options for SC-22 dilutions may include treatment of waste in an in-house waste treatment facility. The local governing authority determines sewerability of the material. For assistance in finding suitable disposal service, please contact your Petroferm representative. Compatibility Stencils At operating temperatures below 130 F (54 C), SC-22 Cleaner is compatible with stencil materials of construction, including adhesives and emulsions. Always keep operating temperatures below 130 F (54 C) when cleaning stencils. Studies show that stencil materials of construction are much more susceptible to attack at temperatures above 130 F (54 C), regardless of cleaning product. Circuit Assemblies SC-22 Cleaner is compatible with PWB materials of construction such as epoxies, flex laminates, and other cross-linked polymers. It does not affect cured solder mask. It will attack OSPs (organic solderability preservatives). Equipment Concentrated SC-22 Cleaner is compatible with metal equipment and diluted SC-22 Cleaner is compatible with polymeric tank and/or plumbing materials of construction such as polypropylene. Viton and/or Teflon elastomers are recommended for seals, gaskets and O-rings. Table 5. BIOACT SC-22 Cleaner is available in 5-gallon pails (37 lb/17 kg) and 55-gallon drums (407 lb/185 kg). Samples are available in one-quart and onegallon containers. Not regulated. Please see Material Safety Data Sheet for detailed information. SC-22 Cleaner should be stored in the original container, preferably in an airconditioned or well-ventilated, fire-resistant building. The shelf life for this product is indefinite when it is stored in its original, sealed container at room temperature. However, the product should be inspected after the designated date on the product label (twenty-four months from the date of manufacture) prior to customer use.
