14 Backyard Composting Composting is nature s way of recycling organic material such as leaves, garden, and food wastes into compost. Mature compost improves the soil condition of lawns and gardens by adding carbon to the soil and lessening the density of soil. It also helps soil to retain water longer. Plants and crops grown in a well-composted soil mix tend to have more resistance to plant diseases as well. Backyard composting can also reduce garbage set out at the curb by 25% or more. You can build your own composter, or buy one at a retailer. In either case, it s simply a matter of mixing the green and brown materials listed in the chart below and turning them in the composter to introduce air into the mix in order to keep odours down and the right kind of bacteria alive and feeding on the waste you put in the composter. Do not add meats or other animal products into a backyard composter and try to avoid too much wet (green) waste as this will cause odours. The ideal Carbon to Nitrogen (C:N) ratio for composting is 30:1. Check the City website or for more information on composting. Gardens benefit greatly from the addition of compost. A Community Garden was established in 2012 at the Gord Watts Municipal Centre using compost from the leaf collection program in Brockville. The compost produced meets provincial requirements for un-restricted use. For information on the Community Garden Brockville network contact: communitygarden@corptype.ca Estimated Carbon-to-Nitrogen Ratios Browns=High Carbon Ashes, wood Greens=High Nitrogen C:N 25:1 Alfalfa 12:1 Cardboard, shredded 350:1 Clover 20:1 Corn stalks 75:1 Coffee grounds 20:1 Fruit waste 35:1 Food waste 20:1 Leaves 60:1 Garden waste 30:1 Grass clippings 20:1 Newspaper, shredded 175:1 Peanut shells 35:1 Hay 25:1 Pine needles 80:1 Manures 15:1 325:1 Seaweed 19:1 Sawdust Straw Wood chips 13 C:N 75:1 400:1 Vegetable scraps 25:1 Weeds 30:1

15 Tips To Reduce Waste Use reusable containers for lunches, snacks, and leftovers as opposed to bags and other disposable packaging. Bring reusable bags to the store to reduce the amount of plastic waste you bring home. Use rechargeable batteries in your everyday electronics. Donate any useable clothing, accessories, and shoes locally (to a charity or in a clothing donation bin) instead of putting them in the garbage. Some thrift stores accept household items. Please call ahead (see page 11). Bring a reusable mug or water bottle to work, school, or on the go. Try to purchase products with the option of less paper and plastic packaging. Buy in bulk this saves on the amount of packaging you would regularly have to dispose of. Reuse items whenever possible. There is also a lot of upcycling and repurposing information available on the internet you can find information on how to add value to lots of everyday products! Wintertime Collection Tips In the wintertime, please remember that waste collection takes place from the roadside. Do not leave waste on your front lawn or steps, or behind snowbanks where it may be missed or unsafe/difficult to access. Please place it at the end of your cleared driveway or safely clear a spot in the snow for placement. In cold weather, your recycling may get stuck in the bin while it s being emptied. Try not to put recycling in the bin if it s still wet from rinsing. 14
