5 IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION All practical work areas and laboratories should be covered by local regulations which must be followed at all times. If required, Armfield can supply a typical set of laboratory safety rules. Your CEX reactor bench has been designed to be safe in use, when installed, operated and maintained in accordance with the instructions in this manual. As with any piece of sophisticated equipment, dangers may exist if the equipment is misused, mishandled or badly maintained. Water-Borne Hazards The equipment described in this instruction manual involves the use of water which under certain conditions can create a health hazard due to infection by harmful microorganisms. For example, the microscopic bacterium called Legionella pneumophila will feed on any scale, rust, algae or sludge in water and will breed rapidly if the temperature of water is between 20 and 45 C. Any water containing this bacterium which is sprayed or splashed creating air-borne droplets can produce a form of pneumonia called Legionnaires Disease which is potentially fatal. Legionella is not the only harmful micro-organism which can infect water, but it serves as a useful example of the need for cleanliness. Under the COSHH regulations, the following precautions must be observed: Any water contained within the product must not be allowed to stagnate, ie. the water must be changed regularly. Any rust, sludge, scale or algae on which micro-organisms can feed must be removed regularly, i.e. the equipment must be cleaned regularly. Where practicable the water should be maintained at a temperature below 20 C or above 45 C. If this is not practicable then the water should be disinfected if it is safe and appropriate to do so. Note that other hazards may exist in the handling of biocides used to disinfect the water. A scheme should be prepared for preventing or controlling the risk incorporating all of the actions listed above. Further details on preventing infection are contained in the publication The Control of Legionellosis including Legionnaires Disease - Health and Safety Series booklet HS (G) 70. ELECTRICAL SAFETY The equipment described in this Instruction Manual operates from a mains voltage electrical supply. It must be connected to a supply of the same frequency and voltage as marked on the equipment or the mains lead. If in doubt, consult a qualified electrician

6 or contact Armfield. The equipment must not be operated with any of the panels removed. To give increased operator protection, the unit incorporates a Residual Current Device (RCD), alternatively called an Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker, as an integral part of this equipment. If through misuse or accident the equipment becomes electrically dangerous, the RCD will switch off the electrical supply and reduce the severity of any electric shock received by an operator to a level which, under normal circumstances, will not cause injury to that person. At least once each month, check that the RCD is operating correctly by pressing the TEST button. The circuit breaker MUST trip when the button is pressed. Failure to trip means that the operator is not protected and the equipment must be checked and repaired by a competent electrician before it is used. HOT SURFACES AND LIQUIDS The unit incorporates a pumped electric water heater, and is capable of producing temperatures that could cause skin burns. Before disconnecting any of the pipes or tubing: - Stop all the pumps. - Leave time for the water to cool - Check that the temperature is at a safe level Do not touch any surfaces close to Hot Surfaces warning labels, or any of the interconnecting tubing, whilst the equipment is in use. CHEMICAL SAFETY Details of the chemicals intended for use with this equipment are given in the Product Manuals for the different reactor options available with this equipment. Chemicals purchased by the user are normally supplied with a COSHH data sheet which provides information on safe handling, health and safety and other issues. It is important that these guidelines are adhered to. Note: - It is the user s responsibility to handle chemicals safely - Prepare chemicals and operate the equipment in well ventilated areas - Only use chemicals specified in the equipment manuals and in the concentrations recommended 2

9 . INTRODUCTION The Armfield CEX Chemical Reactors Teaching Equipment demonstrates the characteristics of the important types of chemical reactor, batch stirred tank reactor (batch reactor), continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) and tubular reactor. Other types of reactor are demonstrated by separate equipment: CEU, packed bed chemical and enzymic reactors; and CEP MkII, continuous stirred tank reactors in series. The reactors available for use with CEX are as follows: - CEB MkII batch reactor - CEM MkII CSTR - CET MkII Tubular reactor There is a mounting position on CEX for any one of the reactors above. Reactors are interchangeable. CEX is in effect the bench providing the services required by each of the reactors such as dual peristaltic pumps for feed delivery, a hot water circulator or chiller (optional) for constant temperature operation, and sensors temperature and conductivity. CEX can be operated with the IFD6 interface device to allow computer data logging. Below CEX is shown with the CEM MkII: CEX fitted with CEM MkII continuous stirred tank reactor 5

Chemical storage vessels. The reagent tank module consists of two glass vessels mounted into a PVC base which is located on studs in the plinth and held in position by thumbnuts. Drain valves are fitted to the underside of each vessel and are accessible within the plinth trough. Rigid standpipes are mounted in the lids of the vessels through a gland. Flexible silicone tubing is used to connect the standpipes to the pumps. standpipes thumbnuts Drain valves 7

12 2.2 Feed pumps Two variable throughput peristaltic pumps are used to pump the reagents from the storage vessels to the fitted reactor. The pumps are mounted on control plates mounted on the front of the plinth. A remote control facility allows the pumps to be driven from an external 0-5V dc signal, via the data logging connector. Manual speed control FRONT VESSEL REAR VESSEL Feed pumps Data logging ports Stirrer control panel 2.3 Stirrer control panel CEM MkII and CEB MkII reactors are equipped with agitators driven by electric motor. The control panel is located on the front of the plinth (see above). 2.4 Hot water circulator A self contained hot water circulator is positioned on the plinth at the rear of the control console housing (see below). Flexible tubes are used to connect the circulator to each reactor. Water, heated by electrical heating element in the circulator, is sucked by a gear pump, contained within the circulator module, through the reactor heating path and into the priming vessel attached to the side of the hot water circulator. The hot water is drawn from the priming vessel and back into the hot water circulator. In this way the hot water is circulated at sub-atmospheric pressure for increased safety. The priming vessel is used to fill the circulator and reactor and also to remove air from the system. 8

O/P 2.5 Temperature control of reactor Temperature control is achieved by circulation of heated or chilled water through submersed coils inside the CEM MkII, CEB MkII reactors and the CET MkII. The hot water circulator is supplied as standard with the CEX service unit whilst the chilled water circulator (CW-6) can be supplied as an accessory. A temperature sensor is designed to be used individually with the CEM MkII and the CET MkII in conjunction with the automatic temperature controller in the control console. The sensor transmits a signal to the controller which then modulates power to the heating element in the circulator, increasing or reducing the amount of heat put into the circulating water. The CEB MkII is supplied with its own temperature sensor. It is possible to run the reactors at temperatures below ambient by disconnecting the hot water circulator and connecting the flexible hoses from the chilled water circulating accessory (CW-6). A jack plug on the control console provides power to the solenoid valve of the chilled water circulator. To do this the switch on the console must be set to the CHILL position. 9

The conductivity is displayed on the meter in units of millisiemens/cm. During a chemical reaction, the conductivity of the reacting solution changes as more of the reactants are converted. This can be monitored and used to determine the degree of conversion and the rate of conversion. The conductivity measurement is available for data logging. 2.7 Reactor fitment Each of the three chemical reactor modules is mounted on identical PVC baseplates which are designed to stand on the plinth in the space provided and to be secured to the base by thumbnuts. Full fitment details for each of the reactors is given in the appropriate reactor manual. 2.8 Mainsplate at rear of plinth In order to use the unit all the circuit breakers and the RCD should be in the ON (up) position. 17 3.7 Calibrating the feed pumps Both peristaltic pumps require calibration so that exact flow rates are known. Calibration should be carried out for both pumps since there may be small differences between them. Fill both reagent vessels. Set the feed pump to 2.0 and determine the flow rate by measuring the volume collected for a defined period. Repeat the procedure for 4.0, 6.0, 8.0 and 0.0 and plot flowrate versus pump speed. 3.8 Operating the CEM MkII The reactor has a turbine agitator () and baffle (2) arrangement for efficient mixing and heat transfer. Temperature in the reactor is controlled by circulating heating or cooling liquid through the internal coil (3). CEM CONTINUOUS STIRRED TANK REACTOR The liquid level in the reactor is controlled by the position of the standpipe (4). This can be adjusted by loosening the back nut (5). To operate at full volume the standpipe is pushed upwards until the mark etched on the tube is level with the bottom of the back nut. A stop on the standpipe limits the lower operating limit to half the full volume. When the reactor is not being used it can be drained through the valve (6). 3 SCORE MARK

20 5. ROUTINE MAINTENANCE To preserve the life and efficient operation of the equipment it is important that the equipment is properly maintained. Regular maintenance of the equipment is the responsibility of the end user and must be performed by qualified personnel who understand the operation of the equipment. 5. General The equipment should be disconnected from the electrical supply when not in use. After use the feed tanks, reactor vessel, sump tray and pipework should be washed through with water to remove chemical residues and then drained. 5.2 RCD test Test the RCD by pressing the TEST button at least once a month. If the RCD button does not trip when the Test button is pressed then the equipment must not be used and should be checked by a competent electrician. 5.3 Calibration of the conductivity sensor The conductivity conditioning circuit (which provides the reading from the conductivity probe supplied with the CEX service unit) is located on a printed circuit board inside the electrical console. This circuit is calibrated before despatch and should not require re-calibration. However, should re-calibration become necessary the appropriate calibration potentiometers can be located using the diagram below. Ensure the equipment has been connected to the electrical supply and switched on for at least 20 minutes. To access the PCB remove the front panel from the electrical console by removing the four fixing screws. It is not necessary to detach the PCB from the front panel. Disconnect the conductivity probe from the socket at the left-hand side of the electrical console. Connect an AC Voltmeter (Range AC mv) to pins and 2 of the vacant socket and adjust potentiometer VR2 on the PCB to give a reading of 50 mv (RMS) on the Voltmeter (probe excitation voltage). Disconnect the Voltmeter then reconnect the probe to the appropriate socket having removed the probe from the appropriate reactor fitted to the CEX. Fill a small beaker with a Conductivity Standard (eg. 0.M KCI giving a conductivity of 2.88 ms at 25 C) and measure the temperature of the Standard using a suitable thermometer. From the table supplied with the Standard determine the actual conductivity of the solution at the measured temperature. Immerse the probe into the Conductivity Standard in the beaker then adjust potentiometer VRC to give a reading on the display to match the conductivity of the Standard solution. 6

21 When the conditioning circuit has been re-calibrated replace the front panel of the electrical console and re-install the probe in the appropriate reactor on the CEX service unit. 5.4 Accessing the electrical circuits inside the plinth Maintenance of the CEX service unit does not require access to the electrical circuits or components located inside the moulded plinth. However, in the event of an electrical problem, it may be necessary for a competent electrician to gain access to the inside of the mouldings as follows: Ensure that the equipment is disconnected from the electrical supply (not just switched off). Drain any liquids contained in the reagent vessels or reactors. Unscrew the channel drain valve located in the recess at the left hand end of the moulded plinth. 7

22 Carefully remove the front panel from the electrical console by unscrewing the four fixings. Disconnect the electrical connections between the top and bottom plinth sections by disconnecting the appropriate connectors. Unscrew the six fixings around the periphery of the plinth top. Carefully lift the top moulded section away from the bottom moulded section and place the top section in a suitable location. The electrical circuits inside the bottom moulded plinth section are accessible. A circuit diagram showing the mains and DC electrical circuits inside the plinth is included at the rear of this manual to assist in fault finding. Should it be necessary to remove the PCB from inside the electrical console then the PCB connections diagram on page 7 shows the location and function of the electrical connectors on the PCB to aid re-assembly. Re-assembly of the top and bottom moulded plinth sections is the inverse of the above instructions. 5.5 Draining the hot water circulator It is not necessary to drain the hot water circulator following use in normal circumstances. However, if the ambient temperature may fall below freezing, especially if it is intended to transport the equipment to a different location or the equipment is to be placed in long term storage, then the circulator should be drained to prevent damage simply by undoing the connections to the reactor and allowing the water to drain under gravity. 5.6 Temperature controller set-up The temperature controller is a three term controller which has been set up and configured to give the optimum control capability for all three reactor modules. As well as the heating control for operating temperatures above ambient, the controller 2 out C can be used to operate a chilled water accessory (CW-6) giving reactor temperatures below ambient. lae MTW 3 If, for any reason, the set up parameters have been altered or corrupted it will be necessary to carry out the following procedure to ensure the optimum settings are restored. Access to the configuration mode is as follows:- Sequentially press keys (3), () and (2) and keep them pressed for 3 seconds. 8

23 When in configuration mode the parameters can be selected by pressing key (2). To display the value press key () and if necessary change using keys (2) or (3). Store the new value by pressing key (). No key activation within 0 seconds causes the instrument to switch over to basic functioning. The following are the correct parameters for the heating cycle:- Parameter Heating Cooling Lo hi hy Pb it dt ar ct PF Lo hi hy ct PF dps Priming the hot water circulator After draining the hot water circulator or changing the reactor vessels it will be necessary to prime the pump again.
