42 FAQ How often do I have to change the filters? Changing your paint booth filters on a scheduled basis (based on pressure drop or hours in operation) is critical to the proper operation of your spray booth. Delaying a filter change could create improper balance in your booth, which will ultimately lead to poor paint transfer efficiency, increased use of coatings, reduced exhaust media life and ultimately vehicle rework. Over saturated exhaust filters will create build up inside the ducts, on the fan and blower causing many problems such as overloading motors. Being diligent with filter changes is critical to extending the life of your paint booth equipment. Change-out frequency is affected by many factors; operational hours, coatings utilized, spray booth design, air supply particle concentrations, air velocity, qualify of filtration devices. The following change-out frequency reflects industry average: Crossdraft Intake Panel Filters: normally changed every 1 to 3 months Downdraft Ceiling Filters: normally changed every 6 to 12 months, (proper pre-filter maintenance will extend the life of down draft ceiling filters) Paint Arrestors: normally changed every 1 to 2 weeks Prefilters: normally changed every 2 to 4 months What is the primary difference between different qualities of down draft ceiling filters? Diffusion capabilities: Premium diffusion media, such as Camfil s CDM600 media, not only delivers the best filtration efficiency in the industry (particle removal), it also provides the best opportunity to balance the airflow through your booth. Premium ceiling media is designed to provide a consistent level of back pressure in the plenum, to ensure that once air starts to enter the booth, it does so evenly across the full breadth of the ceiling. The booth then operates with laminar airflow, required for best painting results. Lower pressure drop diffusion media (such as Camfil s CDM 560 media), still provides extremely high filtration efficiency, but slightly reduced dust holding capacity (reducing life expectancy) and diffusion properties, making it more suitable for prep stations. 43 FAQ What is the difference between paint booth designs? Crossdraft paint booths are the most common and most economical option. Air is pulled in through a front opening or front filtered doors across the product and then exhausted out through the back wall. Once out the back wall it is then vented to the atmosphere. Semi down draft paint booths are a great economical option for a customer wanting heat in the booth. The booth is generally fitted with an intake plenum on the front top of the booth which is where the heated make up air enters the booth. The air drops down and across the product exiting out the back wall. Once out the back wall it is then vented to the atmosphere. Downdraft paint booths are generally the painter s top choice. They provide the most particle free finish. Air comes in through the intake plenum whether heated or not, drops down over the product and exhausts through a pit or series of pits in the floor. The exhaust air is carried away from the booth and then up into the atmosphere. Do I need to install my filters in a certain direction? Yes. To function properly, each filter must be installed in relationship to air flow, and this is typically marked on the filters. Paint Arrestors should have the open weaves side facing into the painting chamber (air entering side). Overspray passes through this open weave and exists through the skin backing (air leaving side). It is the skin backing which acts as the final filtration barrier before air exists the spray booth. Paint overspray must enter the open weave first and exit through the tighter skin backing last. This ensures proper depth loading, meaning paint overspray particles building up evenly in the filter thereby extending the filter s operating life. Cross Draft Panel Filters should have the tackified side facing inside the spray booth, or in other words, the air should enter through the dry side and exit through the tacky side into the spray booth. Down Draft Ceiling filters the supply air (unfiltered) should enter the more open media side and leave through the smooth backing or mesh scrim facing inside the spray booth. The scrim backing is designed to prevent fibers from breaking off and entering into the spray booth. Typically the air leaving side (filtered air) contains product markings (logo, model number, efficiency designation) making it easy to identify.
