CAN YOU EASILY ACCESS EVERYTHING ON YOUR COUNTERTOPS & SURFACES? MAIN PROBLEMS ON YOUR COUNTERTOPS: HOW ARE YOUR WALLS, SHELVES, BUFFET OR OTHER KITCHEN SURFACES? WHAT IS THE STATE OF THE TOP OF YOUR REFRIDGERATOR? HOW ARE THE FRONTS/SIDES OF YOUR REFRIDGERATOR, DISHWASHER, CABINETS? 4 WEEK : Countertops & Surfaces S Identify sorting zones and print/hang signs, if necessary Setup a work table (most likely necessary this time!) Completely remove everything from countertops Completely remove everything from OPEN horizontal and vertical surfaces (includes tops/sides of refridgerator, appliances, cabinets, desks, shelves, etc) Sort items into logical categories (purpose, size, type, location) Vacuum and/or wipe down ALL counters and surfaces Vacuum and/or wipe down large appliances Vaccum and/or wipe down small appliances SORT P Carefully and thoughtfully sort through one pile at a time and determine if items are: KEEP IN KITCHEN, PUT AWAY, TRASH, DONATE, or SELL (use The Ultimate Cleanout Worksheet to help make tough decisions!) Once fully sorted: Put away items that don t belong in the kitchen Bag/box up trash Bag/box up donations and put in car Move For Sale items out of your work area Review everything remaining ( KEEP IN KITCHEN ) and make sure you want/need to keep every final item PURGE A Review your Countertops & Surfaces Assessment Sheet Analayze your final piles/categories and determine what should go where based on size, accessibility, function Refer to the Week for creative storage ideas and solutions Use these questions to help you plan: Does the item/collection fit where you want to put it? Are items close to where they are used? Does the item make good use of that counter/surface? Are items easily accessible? Do you need specific storage devices to make better use of the space? ASSESS C Identify smaller items/groups of items that could be corralled into bins/baskets/jars/etc for better strorage Examples: cooking utensils, cookbooks, spices, coffee supplies, knives Measure any areas that need storage devices before going shopping! Shop your house and favorite stores for cleanable, sturdy containers that will perfectly hold your items Place collections of items into new storage systems Based on your assessment, place items back onto your countertops and surfaces Complete any (functional) DIY projects to finish off this zone Label, as desired CONTAIN E Once you have everything put back, review your work Trouble-shoot problem areas and post questions to the Facebook group if you are stuck! Re-visit your countertops & surfaces in days to evaluate how new systems are working (write a reminder in your calendar!) Celebrate! EVALUATE
