(Photos from 2012 Dog Daze Cookout) ========================================================= INSTRUCTORS WANTED Bay State is looking for a few good people to supplement its teaching staff. If you are an industry professional in the Appliance Repair, Refrigeration or Electronics field, or are retired from one of these careers, and would be interested in a full or part-time position, please your resume to our Director of Education: itcomputers@baystatetech.org TECH TIP By Ralph Harriman, Domestic Refrigeration Instructor The air conditioning season is here, and it s time to dig out the air conditioner from the basement or attic or under the bed or wherever you put it last fall. One thing you can bet on, if you have taken the air conditioning course, someone, a friend, neighbor, or relative is going to call you to check
out their air conditioner before the hot weather hits. Here are some tips on how to improve the operation of a window air unit. 1. Make sure the filter is clean and in place. If the filter needs to be cleaned it can be vacuumed or rinsed with water. If you rinse it, make sure it s dry before reinstalling. 2. Do not run an air conditioner with a light extension cord. 3. Do not run an air conditioner with curtains or high back chairs in front of the discharge grill. 4. Make sure that the evaporator and condenser coils are clean. 5. Make sure the controls are properly set. Make sure that the air exchanger is closed for maximum cooling. 6. Explain to the user how to set the controls and what to expect from the air conditioner. 7. With a thermometer, check the air passing by the filter and the air coming out of the front panel. There should be a minimum difference of 15 degrees between the air going in and the air flowing out. Example: Air going in = 80 degrees. Air coming out = 60 degrees, Difference: 20 degrees 8. Make sure the air conditioner is not too small for the area being cooled. You can figure the proper size unit by using a simple formula: Square footage multiplied by the number 25 Example: A room measures 15 x 14 = 210 square feet 210 square feet x 25 = 5,250 BTUs Add 300 BTUs for more than two occupants Additional heat loads such as an attic or large windows would require more BTUs of cooling. ========================================================= GREAT QUOTATIONS Always listen to experts. They'll tell you what can't be done, and why. Then do it. Robert A. Heinlein =========================================================
PLYMOUTH NORTH H.S. STUDENTS VISIT BAY STATE On Thursday, May 16 th, Plymouth North High School teacher Rick Mei brought some of his Facilities Management students to visit Bay State School of Technology. A tour of the school included demonstrations in the Major Appliance/Basic Electricity classroom, the HVACR and Domestic Refrigeration Shops, and a power point presentation in Electronics. The students were all bright, polite and motivated young men. They appreciated the opportunity to interact with teachers and staff. Mr. Mei is planning to bring another group to visit the school in June. Hat Tip to BSST instructor Bob Fuqua for arranging the tour. Caption: Plymouth North H.S. Teacher Rick Mei with BSST Instructor Bob Fuqua Caption: Director of Education John Iemma speaks to Plymouth North High students.

After high school Jay started working at a number of different jobs including a gas station attendant, a bank teller, an HVAC dispatcher, a T- Shirt Shop worker and valet parking attendant. At this point he had moved to New Bedford, and one day, while standing at the valet podium reading the newspaper, he kept coming across the ad for Bay State School of Technology. He thought back to working at B.T.U. Controls, when he would send out technicians with a problem to solve, and they would go out and make the repair. The ad planted a seed in the back of his mind that this sounded like a career he could enjoy one that provided a comfortable living and offered creative challenges as well. Jay returned to the Vineyard for the summer, taking a part time position at the Bank, and started at Bay State School of Technology in the fall. He originally signed up for the Major Appliances and Domestic Refrigeration courses but added HVAC at the
urging of his instructor Mary Barnaby as a way to increase his marketability. Jay said his training at Bay State School of Technology was top notch and provided him with the skill set of an entry level HVACR technician. Coming from working at a bank to becoming an HVAC Tech constituted a major change for him. I got all the skills I needed to get my foot in the door as an HVAC Tech. Jay said he found all of his instructors at BSST to be fully knowledgeable in each section. They were willing to go the extra mile to make sure that I had the concepts and skills needed to work in the field. He once had occasion to call Major Appliance instructor Joe Stevens for technical advice while working on appliances for friends and family after hours. Mary Barnaby stayed many days after class to go over topics I needed more work on. Without their patience and professionalism, Jay knows he would not have done as well as he did at BSST. Jay was hired by BTU Control Inc. in May of 2010 as a maintenance technician cleaning central and mini split A/C systems. He moved from maintenance to installations and eventually back to service. As a service technician I have a rotation on call and service all brands of HVACR equipment. Last March (2012) BTU sent me back to continue my education in oil heat and I successfully passed the Massachusetts oil heat licensing exam. Jay has been able to provide himself with a comfortable living without worry of lay-offs, and looks forward to a steady stream of work. Jay resides on the Island of Martha s Vineyard. We wish him continued success in his new career. BEACON PROPERTIES HOLDS JOB FAIR AT BAY STATE Beacon Properties, the huge apartment community manager, was in house on May 30th interviewing for prospective job candidates.
