3 Tamas Hydronic Tamas Hydronic develops and manufactures hot water heating systems tailored for residential, commercial and industrial facilities. Pre-fabricated Tamas panels provide a convenient alternative to onsite production for contractors, a pre-engineered inclusive package for building managers, and a compact, convenient system for homeowners. Custom engineering ensures that pump and pipe sizing maximizes water distribution and heat transfer. Systems are setup using independent zones that can be adjusted to cater to the requirements of a specific room or area. System efficiency and operating costs can be addressed by adding solar or geothermal technologies to a Tamas Hydronic panel. These panels manage solar panels/tubes or geothermal heat pumps, creating residual cost savings and an environmentally friendly energy option. Solar systems can be used to provide domestic hot water through both direct and indirect hot water tanks. Geothermal systems provide the ability to heat a building regardless of the outside weather or temperature. Radiant vs. Forced Air Applications Hydronic heating systems have expanded beyond typical boiler-radiator combinations to include radiant floor heating systems which provide a host of benefits compared to forced air installations: 1. Typical forced air systems distribute the majority of their heated air through vents at the top portion of a room. In comparison, radiant floor loops circulate pre-heated water to heat the floor from the ground up, creating a comfortable environment as well as avoiding wasted heat at the top of the room. 2. Zone control allows for radiant loops in unused rooms to be turned off, further increasing energy savings. Room temperature can also be set independently of other areas in a building. Hydronic systems also use a boiler rather than a furnace and are as a result generally quieter than forced air systems. 3. As a radiant system heats the actual floor surface via the circulating water loops, air circulation is avoided, which in turn cuts down on the disturbance of particles such as dust mites and pollen within the home. This can benefit allergy and asthma sufferers and avoid humidity issues. 4. Properly controlled hydronic systems have the capacity to provide accurately tempered water. Homes heated with a furnace system have a tendency to drop below the desired temperature set on a thermostat before instigating a call for heat. This can lead to an undershoot/overshoot cycle where by the temperature in the house does not often hit the target. Hydronic systems attempt to avoid these hot-cold swings by distributing pre-mixed water to the zone. This leads many hydronic systems to be substantially more efficient and comfortable then their forced air counterparts. Hydronic Fluid Heat Capacity Retention Rate = 496 BTU/Lb m F * *Approximate Retention Rate Forced Air Heat Capacity Retention Rate = 1.08 BTU/Lb m F * 1
4 Vancouver 2010: Athlete s Village Project Tamas Hydronic was responsible for designing and manufacturing the combined heating/ cooling units installed in the Millennium Waterfront Athlete s Village development in Vancouver, British Columbia. The building was developed with the target of achieving LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification. LEED Certification serves as the definitive standard when attempting to minimize the environmental footprint of a structure, and striving to attain complete sustainability. Each apartment unit received its own respective heating/cooling system; three panel types were developed to accommodate the three corresponding suite sizes. The Tamas systems were developed to distribute tempered hot water when a heat demand exists, as well as provide air conditioning via chilled water during the warmer summer months. In excess of 1200 individual units were completed for the project. Innovative design strategies allowed for compact unit design and minimal residual noise. This compensation allowed structure designers to integrate the heating and cooling system within the living space. Designers were able to maximize habitable square footage in the apartments as the requirement for a boiler room or mechanical space was not necessary. 5 Modular Hydronic Panels The Tamas line of hydronic panels, solar systems, snowmelt units and VFD controls have been developed to accommodate a wide range of BTU loads, suitable for residential dwellings, commercial buildings and industrial/institutional sized enclosures. The underlying modular design theory allows for additional panels to be added to an installation to meet increased demand. Efficient, comfortable heating and cooling service is provided to residential homes through infloor radiant heat or strategically located radiators. Pre-mixed water is tempered with the use of a thermostatic mixing valve to ensure constant temperatures, as well as ensuring that the integrity of floor covering such as hardwood are not compromised. Isolated zone pumps give individual control to specific areas of larger homes and multi-family units. Larger operations have the capacity of running auxiliary fan coils, snowmelt systems during the winter months, and chiller panels. The addition of solar power manifolds can add residual free heat to any building with the installation of efficient solar tubes. Custom panel engineering ensures proper system sizing, resulting in appropriate fluid distribution and accurate room temperature. 3
6 Solar Systems Tamas solar collectors provide a latent, residual heat source which can be tied into existing domestic hot water tanks for storage or to compliment radiant heat systems as a secondary heat source (weather dependent), lowering heating costs. A dump option is also available to direct excessive hot water into a setpoint such as a swimming pool, hot tub or snowmelt. An optional flat roof installation kit is available to install the panel manifolds at an angle, ensuring maximum heat collection during prime sunlight hours. Multiple manifolds can be coupled to increase solar intake, further reducing heating costs and increasing efficiency and effectiveness of the installation. The Tamas T-SL-HX-2010 is available in several sizes to suit specific solar setups. Tamas solar systems are built on the foundation of evacuated tube solar water heaters. The tubes have been granted SRCC Certification in North America. Features: Outdoor/indoor reset for tank operation Solar system isolation (50% glycol) from heating system application (30% glycol) Boiler backup application Heat dump operation Snowmelt Systems Tamas snowmelt panels are a safe, reliable alternative to manual snow and ice removal. HBX control systems provide efficient, real-time operation. Pre-engineered systems are calculated to maximize efficiency through heat exchanger sizing, system pump sizing, and can accommodate facilities requiring a maximum of 3 million BTUs. The panels are built with flexible, multi-system components which can handle driveways, ramps, sidewalks and steps, making the board suitable for residential, commercial and industrial sites. Features: Pre-designed, wired and assembled Function and pressure tested Expandable capabilities Includes complete HBX Snowmelt System SNO-1000, SNO-0100, SNO-0110, SNO
7 VFDs and Controls The addition of variable frequency drives and application specific controls can increase system efficiency, reduce equipment depreciation, and minimize maintenance costs in large scale boiler operations. Boiler controls enable warm-weather shutdown when the outside temperature exceeds the adjusted indoor target temperature, creating energy savings as well as decreasing pump run-time. Boiler controls are also able to automatically rotate system pump usage in an installation containing backup measures. Adjustable variable frequency drives offer the ability to modulate flow rate and speed by sensing the differential pressure or temperature within the system. Distribution is regulated to meet the minimum output requirements to satisfy the system load.
