2 Operation 2.1 Introduction Didsbury Engineering s modular air mover kit offers a complete resource to allow personnel to ventilate aircraft fuel tanks safely. The large and medium air mover units are versatile and lightweight, with no moving parts. They operate on compressed air and are suitable for ventilating spaces containing volatile or hazardous atmospheres. The medium air mover (PRG318) features both intake and discharge air duct adaptor ports, while the large air mover (PRG317) provides only an intake port. Both units allow for easy attachment of the supplied antistatic air ducting. 2.2 General safety information Follow the airline / aircraft manufacturer s fuel tank entry procedures at all times. Only competent, trained persons must operate the equipment contained within the Purge-Air modular air mover kit in accordance with its manufacturer s instructions. Regularly check and service all equipment in accordance with its manufacturer s instructions. Thoroughly check all equipment before use. Thoroughly clean all equipment after use and before storage. Replace all consumable items as soon as possible after use and before storage. React to all fuel spills in accordance with local regulations. Do not use the modular air mover kit during electrical storms. Portable air movers must be located outside the controlled safety zone created around the aircraft. During operation, always correctly connect the air mover s bonding terminal to electrical ground with a grounding cable. Only operate the large and medium air mover units with a suitable compressed air supply. Firmly position the air mover units on a flat horizontal surface prior to operation. Prevent personnel from standing within range of the discharge from the air mover outlets as fuel vapour, liquid fuel and debris may be contained in its exhaust flume. Issue 1 Page 3
2.3 Required air supply The large and medium air movers operate using compressed air sourced from either a workshop airline or a portable air compressor. Maximum air pressure: Large air mover flow: Medium air mover flow: 101 psi (7 bar) 153 SCFM 50 SCFM Safety notes: When a portable compressor is used, it must be located outside the controlled safety zone created around the aircraft and suitably grounded. 2.4 Static conductive air ducting The 200mm bore x 10m static conductive air ducting (SAFD20/10-EX) allows the use of the medium air mover (PRG318) with fuel tanks where a connecting wing adaptor assembly (PRG265T1) is inserted into the tank panel in place of an aircraft tank access cover. See Figure 5, Figure 6, Figure 7 and Figure 9. Alternatively, the 200mm bore x 10m static conductive air ducting (SAFD20/10-EX) can be placed directly into the fuel tank access holes. The 200mm bore static conductive air ducts are connected to 200mm to 200mm duct y-adaptors (SAFD20/YC). The y-adaptors are in turn connected to the 200mm bore conductive air ducting depending upon usage (as shown in Figure 8 for example). Additionally, the 200mm bore x 10m static conductive air ducting (SAFD20/10-EX) is used to vent the air mover exhaust flow away from the working area safely, as shown in Figure 5. It may also be used to draw in fresh air for the air mover to ventilate a tank area as shown in Figure 8. Lengths of 200mm bore x 10m static conductive air ducting (SAFD20/10-EX) may be joined together by means of couplings (SAFD20/CU) as required to achieve the required length. See Figure 2, Figure 3 and Figure 4 for the correct method. The strap is tightened by levering the ratchet s lever back and forth. To release the strap, first depress the UNLOCK button against the base of the handle and then move the handle all the way until it has swung through 180 to lay flat, fully open. Then pull the strap off the crank to slacken the strap. See Figure 4. Safety notes: During operation, ensure that the static conductive air ducting and air mover when deployed are placed in such a way that they do not become a hazard to other persons. 2.5 Fuel tank wing adaptor assembly The wing adaptor assemblies (PRG265T1) take the place of the aircraft tank access cover and allow for connection of the 200mm bore x 10m static conductive air ducting (SAFD20/10-EX). Connection to the air mover inlet is via the 200mm bore static conductive air ducting. Page 4 Issue 1
Safety note: When replacing the aircraft fuel tank access cover with a wing adaptor assembly, take care not to damage the seal within the wing. 2.6 Compressed air hose Air connection to the large (PRG317) and medium (PRG318) air movers is via a ¾ bore x 15m yellow hose (PRG272), complete with quick connectors. Safety notes: When using the compressed air hose make sure that you are aware of other persons in the area. Correctly connect the couplings before pressurising the hose. Make sure that the hose is de-pressurised before disconnecting the hose. Issue 1 Page 5
2.7 Operating instructions medium air mover (PRG318) 1) Check all equipment for damage before use. Do not use damaged equipment. 2) Deploy the kit alongside the aircraft where the fuel tank access is required. 3) Make sure that that the yellow air hose assembly (PRG272) can be deployed from the intended position of the medium air mover (PRG318) to the compressed air supply point. 4) Make sure that the compressed air control valve is shut before connecting to the available compressed air supply. 5) Check that the ambient conditions are suitable for fuel tank ventilation and that the correct authorities have been obtained. 6) Select and attach the appropriate lengths of static conductive air ducting (SAFD20/10-EX), joining sections using the y-adaptors (SAFD20/YC) and couplings (SAFD20/CU) as required to achieve the required configuration. The method of overlapping ducts at the couplings is described in Figure 2, Figure 3 and Figure 4. Figure 2 Connecting 200mm antistatic ducts using the SAFD20/CU coupling Page 6 Issue 1
Figure 3 200mm ducts connected with SAFD20/CU coupling Figure 4 200mm antistatic ducting strap release 7) Position the medium air mover (PRG318) adjacent to the fuel tank that is to be ventilated and connect the 200mm bore static conductive air ducting (SAFD20/10-EX) to its inlet. Issue 1 Page 7
Safety note: Dependent on the volume of airflow achieved, the air mover may need to be restrained against the reaction force generated. 8) The medium air mover (PRG318) can be used in the configurations shown in Figure 5, Figure 6 and Figure 7. Remove the fuel tank access cover(s) and store safely. At least one other cover should be removed to provide a through flow of air in the fuel tank. Removing further covers will quicken the operation. Attach the wing adaptor with clamps (PRG265T1) and connect the 200mm bore static conductive air ducting (SAFD20/10-EX) to the wing adaptor. Alternatively position the 200mm bore static conductive air ducting (SAFD20/10-EX) inlets within the tank to be ventilated (as shown in Figure 8 for example). 9) Run out and connect a grounding cable to the medium air mover (PRG318). Safety note: Air movers that operate on the Venturi principle can generate considerable amounts of static electricity, as can the movement of air through the ducting. 10) Take the ¾ x 15m yellow compressed air hose (PRG272) and connect one end to the appropriate compressed air distribution point and the other end to the medium air mover s (PRG318) air inlet. 11) Clear the area directly in front of the medium air mover s (PRG318) exhaust duct and downwind of it. 12) Start the compressor or turn on the workshop air. Check all connections for leaks. 13) After a suitable period, shut down the medium air mover (PRG318) and sample the air quality in the fuel tank. Continue ventilating and sampling until the correct conditions for entry are achieved. 14) The medium air mover (PRG318) may now be left in place and run using a muchreduced inlet air pressure to provide sweet air movement throughout the tank whilst work takes place. Alternatively, you may reverse the medium air mover (PRG318) in the ducting arrangement to provide forced ventilation of sweet air as shown in Figure 8. Make sure that you turn off the compressed air supply before uncoupling and reconnecting the medium air mover in the opposite direction. 15) When the task is complete, shut off the compressed air supply at the supply point. Allow sufficient time for residual air to drain from the air hose (PRG272) and then disconnect the air hose and return it to its storage location. 16) Remove the ducting (SAFD20/10-EX) from the medium air mover (PRG318) and from the wing adaptors (PRG265T1) or fuel tank as applicable. 17) Disconnect all ducting (SAFD20/10-EX) from couplings (SAFD20/CU) and y-adaptors (SAFD20/YC). Page 8 Issue 1
18) Disconnect the grounding cable from the medium air mover (PRG318) and store. 19) Clean the medium air mover (PRG318), wing adaptors (PRG265T1) and y-adaptors (SAFD20/YC). 20) Compress the flexible ducting (SAFD20/10-EX) using the straps provided, as shown in Figure 10, so that it can be returned to its storage bags. 21) Return the modular air mover kit (PRG434) to storage.
