2 Introduction Ozone is used for the elimination of bacteria in the water. These bacteria could otherwise present a health risk, as it may be inhaled with the mist created by the high pressure wash-off. See for ozone s MSDS. 5 Description of Operation Venturi For details on how this operates, see Generator Tube. An (AC) voltage is applied between the Centre Steel Electrode and the Body. Ozone is created by a corona discharge. For details on corona, see The negative pressure at the venturi draws the ozone-laden air into the venturi, where it mixes with the water. Replacement air enters from the other end of the generator tube. The production of ozone within the ceramic body causes a buzzing sound. T However, this sound is attenuated by end caps and the drowned out by the cooling fan. Cooling Fan Ensure the fan runs. The ozone-producing process creates considerable amounts of heat. Overheating of the cell reduces the conversion efficiency to about 40%. The fan bearings have a finite life.

6 Testing There is little to go wrong with this device. Power Supply Apply power Place the blade of a well-insulated screwdriver on the chassis near one end of where the Centre Steel Electrode extends through the stand-off insulator. Pivot the shaft of the screwdriver towards the nut. An arc being drawn between the nut at a distance of about 3-4 mm and the shaft of the screwdriver indicates proper operation. Venturi With water flowing, remove the air filter from the bottom, then Place a finger over the air intake. There will be a slight suction felt. Ceramic Body The only need to dismantle this is if there is to remove any rust scale from the internal chamber. Confirming Operation If there is still doubt about it working, it can be tested as follows: Refer to Photo 3 Place the unit on its back on the bench Remove both nuts and the High Voltage Wire Remove both screws fixing the Stand-Off Insulator to the back-plane. Remove the end (make sure that the soft plastic seal/washer is not lost. This normally engages with the rim of the ceramic tube.) Replace the High Voltage Wire on the Electrical Connection of the Centre Steel Electrode. There is no need to refit the Nuts. Apply power keeping fingers well clear. A purple glow should be visible along the length of the Centre Steel Electrode, inside the Ceramic Body. A subtle chlorine-like smell will become apparent after several minutes of operation.
