1 PARTS AND SERVICE MEMO All Engines used in asphalt crushing and screening PSM FT MSC September 17, 2008 SUBJECT: FT Units, Engine Radiator, Asphalt Buildup When crushing asphalt in recycle operations, dust created from crushing may create a buildup on the radiator. Without periodic inspection and cleaning, asphalt buildup may eventually cause radiator blockage. This buildup can affect the heat exchange rate of the radiator resulting in cooling loss and engine overheating. In most cases, buildup is not easily detected by visual inspection. Significant cooling loss can occur even with a light coating. Upon close inspection, as shown in the picture below, a clean appearing radiator (even one professionally cleaned) can still have a light coating. PSM 002 0809 FT MSC Use the following guidelines for daily radiator inspection. 1. Visually inspect 100% of the entire radiator for buildup from both sides. 2.

4 PSM FT MSC Use the following guidelines for daily radiator inspection. 1. Visually inspect 100% of the entire radiator for buildup from both sides. 2. If no buildup is detected through visual inspection, use a flashlight and shine the light through the radiator from both sides. This will determine if there is buildup within the interior section of the radiator core. 3. Using a 9 or a 12 gauge wire, carefully probe voids between the air fins randomly checking different areas of the radiator. The radiator is constructed of three sections and it should be checked in several places in each of the three sections. The wire probe will help determine the severity of blockage by the resistance of the wire as it penetrates the buildup. NOTICE When probing voids, be careful not to damage air fins. 4. Repair any damaged radiator fins. Damaged fins Cleaning Removing asphalt from the radiator is not possible by power washing alone. Although there are many degreasing products that could be effective, we have had experience with Astec* Excel Clean HD and Citrus King. Spray a cleaner such as Astec* Excel Clean HD or Citrus King degreaser on the radiator prior to power washing. This type of solvent makes radiator cleaning more effective. NOTICE September 17, 2008 Use only a degreaser compatible with aluminum composition. Keep in mind that this procedure will generally be effective for most applications; however, modifications may be needed depending on operating conditions and asphalt consistencies. Use the following procedure to clean the radiator. 1. The radiator should be cleaned when it is cold. 2. Apply cleaner to radiator using a good quality garden sprayer. 3. After applying cleaner, wait 10 to 20 minutes then reapply. Reapplying will keep the asphalt workable as the first application starts to evaporate. Damaged Radiator Fins By the time the radiator becomes visibly blocked, intensive cleaning, which may include removing the radiator, will be required. 4. Using a pressure washer with cold water, start cleaning the radiator, working from the bottom to the top. 5. Special care must be taken not to damage the cooling fins of the radiator when power washing. *Astec Excel Clean HD is in no way associated with Astec Industries. page 4 of 6

After washing, inspect the radiator and reapply cleaner and wash as needed. A radiator cover retro-fit kit is available from KPI-JCI, Inc. This kit will convert the radiator cover on a KPI-JCI Fast Trax unit to ease in radiator cover removal for daily inspection and cleaning. Contact KPI-JCI, Inc. if interested in purchasing this kit. This kit is only available on the following models: FT2640, FT2650, FT4240 and FT4250. Refer to EB FT MSC for instructions on installing the new radiator cover. Prevention To reduce radiator buildup when crushing asphalt, the following steps should be used. 1. A dust suppression system should be used to eliminate dust. 2. Position the unit so that prevailing winds do not blow dust over the radiator. 3. Inspect the engine radiator daily. 4. Regularly schedule cleaning depending on operating conditions.
