2 2 Helmke-Yeich Tumble Drum Tester The Helmke-Yeich Tumble Drum Tester is used for disseminating the particulate and shedding features of products deemed suitable for the clean room environment. The H-Y Tumble Drum Tester is used by a majority of clean room laundries, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, semiconductor and electronic organizations worldwide. The unit is recommended by the Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES-RP3.2) for testing garments, wipers, gloves, and other clean room ready products. Features of the H-Y Tumble Drum Tester: The H-Y Drum Is Mirror finished stainless steel both inside and outside. The H-Y Tumble Drum has removable baffles for easy cleaning A Sealed Direct Drive Motor Assembly assures no particulate generation from the motor and assembly that may effect testing. Variable Speed Control is standard with the unit with an optional digital speed readout. The Stainless Steel Particle Counter introductory tube used to measure air in the drum does not effect the rotation and natural tumbling of product tested. Testing with the H-Y Tumble Drum Tester The entire unit is first purged in a laminar flow hood or controlled area. The unit incorporates a stainless steel particle counter connection on the exterior of the drum. This connection, with 3/8" ID PVC tubing, to the particle counter enables the operator to sample air inside the drum and evaluate the baseline contamination levels prior to beginning testing. As the Drum spins in the Class 100 laminar flow area, background counts will begin to drop. In approximately 5 minutes of initial purging, background counts will reach a suitable level to begin testing. These background levels are recorded prior to each test and the product to be tested is introduced and tested for a one (1) minute period. Five (5) additional readings for each product are recorded and averaged. The results will depict the level of contamination that the product will emit to the clean room environment per minute. Acceptable levels for varying clean room conditions are described in the IES RP3 monograph. 4 4 Helmke-Yeich Tumble Drum Testing of Products Deemed Suitable for Controlled Environments The most respected testing procedure for dissemination of particulate and shedding features of materials suitable for Class 100 clean rooms is the Helmke Tumble Drum Test (Veltek is the manufacturer of the H-Y Tumble Drum) The following test was conducted by the procedure recommended by the Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES), IEST-RP-CC003.2 (termed the RP3.2), Procedure for Testing: (see IEST-RP-CC003.2 for complete recommendations) Materials in their converted clean room ready condition are to be tested under the same atmospheric conditions (Class 100), in the Helmke-Yeich Tumble Drum. 1. Per the IEST, RP3.2 testing procedure a Tumble Drum manufactured by Veltek Associates, Inc. which was electo-polished both inside and outside was cleaned with DECON-AHOL 70% IPA and a dry Velawipe #4 ESP2150 within the Class 100 certified laminar flow hood. 2. Upon completion of cleaning, the tumble drum was allowed to purged in a laminar flow hood until background counts measured at.5 um and larger were reduced to a standardized level for each test. This was repeated for each component tested. The speed setting on the tumble drum is set at 10 rpm s. 2. Item #1 was prepared for testing by wiping of the exterior of the polyethylene bag with a DECON-AHOL 70% IPA and a dry Velawipe #4 ESP Readings from a Met One Particle Counter Model 200 are taken as the beginning background reading which is later subtracted from the total. These results are recorded at particulate levels of greater than 0.3, 0.5 and 5 microns, respectively. Levels should not exceed the following listed below: >0.3 um = 20 particles >0.5 um = 10 particles > 5.0 um = 5 particles 4. Using clean technique, the garment is unpackaged and folded in accordance with IEST-RP-CC003.2 protocol that is dependent upon the garment tested. 5. Upon unpackaging, the garment is introduced through the tumble drum insertion slot and 6 readings lasting for 1 minute/reading are recorded. The first readings are discarded and the 5 remaining readings are averaged. On the following page is an example record sheet.
