Register Online Healesville Living and Learning Centre presents Badger Creek Community Harvest Project Saturday 8th September 9:00 am 4:00 pm at Badger Creek Primary School and Hall Fun, ecofriendly workshops, market stalls and more for the whole family!
What s it all about? Pop in to our Community Harvest event at the Badger Creek Primary school for a workshop or just to have a look around, meander through our market stalls and find out what is going in your community. Join Sioux Dollman at any time, who will be working all day creating a beautiful garden seat out of rubbish, old tyres and ferros cement or make yourself a smoothie on a bike! Find out how to use herbs for all sorts of medicinal purposes with naturopath Jenny Locke, or how to build a wicking bed with Ollie so that your vegetables survive the heat of summer. Go for a walk with Karen from HEWI and find out how important tiny invertebrates are to our ecosystem and much more. There will be a selection for workshops running over the course of the day costing $5.00 each and market stalls open all day.
The Workshops The Workshops 2:30 pm 4:30 pm 9:00 am 11:00 am Introduction to Permaculture Practical How to Build a Wicking Bed Robyn and Peter Veeken retired to a small farm just outside Woori Yallock four years ago and began their permaculture journey. To them, permaculture is a way of life; living as sustainable a life as possible, improving the environment enjoying the gardens and caring for their animals. Using old apple crates Ollie will guide you through the steps to making a wicking bed. The wicking bed is a self watering system that will keep you vegetables growing throughout the warmer months. The design allows for water to be stored in the bottom of the raised bed so it gently wicks back up as the plants need it. Natural Soap Making Learn to make your own Olive Oil Soap with all natural ingredients including organic clays for colour, essential oils and a variety of ingredients for texture. This introduction is all you need to start handcrafting your own soaps. Use of other oils will also be covered, as well as the making of both soap bars and liquid soaps. Making your own soap costs a fraction compared with purchasing quality soaps made with natural ingredients. HEWI Walking and Water Creatures In this workshop they will talk about how they are slowly but surely improving their property using the permaculture systems. Permaculture has been practiced for many years, but the phrase was only coined about 40 years ago as a way of life. Join HEWI community facilitator and Mt Toolebewong & District Landcare member, Karen Garth on an easy stroll along Badger Creek to learn about local native plants. See how the wildlife corridor along the creek has progressed and where gliding possums feed including the endangered Yellowbellied Glider, and learn about plants suitable for your property. Collect freshwater invertebrates from the creek platypus, native water rat and fish food and learn how they can tell us the health of our waterway. All equipment supplied. Wear clothing and footwear suitable for the weather on the day. Bring along your mobile phone or tablet to download free apps to help you identify and record flora and fauna.
The Workshops 10:00 am 11:00 am An Introduction to Eco Dyeing Carla Rose is s Healesville based artist working with elements of Earth, Fire and Plant Matter to create stunning Eco Leaf Prints on Fibres, Felted Sculptures and Fashion Garments. a An Introduction to Permaculture Earth Care Rebuilding nature s capital People Care Looking after ourselves, our family and the broader community. Fair Share Living within our means This presentation will discuss these ethics that are supported by the twelve principles that guide us. 11:30 am 1:30 pm Practical Sustainable Living Community and sense of Community is very important for our wellbeing. This talk is an opportunity to learn the models of Moora Moora Cooperative Community the oldest intentional community in Australia, and Yarra Valley ECOSS, a community environment hub in Wesburn. Chelsea McNab is a long standing member of Moora Moora Coop and Executive Officer at Yarra Valley ECOSS. CANCELLED Ferros Cement Ferro Cement workshop with Sioux Dollman is a little taste of what can be created with this amazing process. As this is a lengthy process Sioux will be working all day, so feel free to pop in at any time and give her a hand. However between 11:30 and 1:30 she will go through the process in further detail, including techniques and skills for creating garden walls, steps, seats, water tanks and sculptures using rubbish reo wire, tyres, cement render, oxides and more to create magic in your garden and home.
a Slow Fashion Upcycling Learning the art of darning and upcycling your old worn out garments to make something new and fresh, be it a bag for the shopping or a new wearable garment. This is slow fashion and reduces, reuses and recycles fabrics. 2:30 pm 4:30 pm Bush Tucker Ralph will bring his extensive knowledge of local plants and foods to rejuvenate the bush tucker garden at the primary school. Covering three different areas of use food, fibres and medicines, Ralph offers deep insight into the value and use of the different plants. In this workshop we will be replanting the garden and Ralph will be there to share his wisdom and knowledge on the use of these plants. Foodbased Health Sensory Garden Jenny is a naturopath and is going to take us on a journey into creating a sensory garden, sharing her knowledge on creating a garden with herbs for family health and wellbeing, incorporating how to use them as medicine for basic family health. In this workshop you will learn about herbs for cooking and health, companion planting, herbal insect repellent, digestive aids, memory, energy or weight loss, attention deficit disorder and more. You will also receive a free workbook on herbs. An Introduction to Eco Dyeing Come and learn how to create eco leaf prints using local eucalypts, have your imagination sparked as artist and maker Carla Rose imparts her knowledge and inspiration, participants will learn how to create leaf prints, mindfully harvest colour giving leaves, create a recycled mordant, and a rusty red eucalypts dye bath.
The Workshops 2:30 pm 4:30 pm Introduction to Permaculture Practical Robyn and Peter Veeken retired to a small farm just outside Woori Yallock four years ago and began their permaculture journey.
