1 A Day At Country Village
2 What do I learn through a cooking experience? I learn coordination by blending and pouring. I learn to use different tools for straining, measuring, stirring, etc. I learn what foods are really good for me. I learn to recognize new tastes and smells. I learn about sequencing and consequences: water freezes when it is in the freezer, boils when it heats up, etc. * Cook with a Book Elective* Each week the children will read a book and make the food that they read about..it may be a milkshake, muffins, meatballs, tortillas or even fresh pasta!! Sometimes our l il chefs might bring home the delicious things that they made unless of course we gobble it down!!! The children will be involved in the whole process of putting the ingredients together by measuring, mixing all of the ingredients from scratch as much as possible- no boxes, cans or mixes. They will also explore math; number recognition and fractions, i.e. 1/8, 1/4 etc. as well as science; i.e. what is baking powder and why do we need it?
3 What do I learn when I play in the sandbox? The sand has a different texture. I learn about weight. I learn to pour. I learn about volume. I can dig tunnels, form ridges, and build roads. I develop motor skills when I dig. I can dig a hole and fill it up with water. I develop social skills by talking with and negotiating with other children. I can write in the sand. I like to touch and feel it. It is imaginative play (baking cakes, pies, etc.) I enjoy filling up and emptying containers.
4 What do I learn when I play with clay or playdough? I learn to let out my aggression and frustration. I learn manual dexterity. I learn form my senses of touch, smell, and sight. I learn I can create. I learn texture. It helps to develop my vocabulary. I enjoy squeezing, pressing, pinching, pulling and shaping the material. I acquire a feeling of strength as I struggle with the resistance of the clay or playdough. I use the large and small muscles of my shoulders, arms, hands, and fingers.
5 What do I learn through Dramatic Play? I learn problem solving. I learn to understand the feelings of others. I have the chance to assume another role and act out the feelings that I wouldn t normally get a chance to. I can hide behind another character. I learn how to be in front of other people. I learn to make costumes from paper or dress up clothes. I learn morals by acting out different situations. I learn to express myself. I learn how it feels to be a fireman, mailman, teacher, etc. I learn how to be two things at once. I learn to express my true feelings.
6 Drama-Elective Students will learn to express their creative writing through dramatic play where they will write their own stories and bring their stories to life. They will be creating quarterly activities such as, Making Puppets and putting stories to Life, A Winter Story that they will write and perform, A costume activity that they will wear in their performance. This will be a great experience to build a child s selfesteem as well as building great friendships with their fellow actors.
7 What do I learn when I play with water? Water play is soothing. It is an acceptable way to vent my feelings. I learn to measure. I learn to keep the water in the pan/tub. I learn what objects float and which ones don t. I learn to pour. I learn about volume. I learn to enjoy the sensation of playing with water. I can pretend (washing dishes, giving a baby a bath, etc.). I learn to wash my hands and face. I learn how water reacts with mixed with oil, soap, or colors. I learn how water flows through things. I learn how a pump works.
8 What do I learn when I play with blocks? I learn to distinguish letters. I practice counting skills. I learn to work cooperatively with others. I learn to sort and classify. I learn to be creative. I learn to build and balance. It helps me develop my hand-eye coordination. It helps me to perceive things differently regarding depth perception. It helps me to learn the basics of physics (incline planes, gravity, etc.) I learn that some things will roll and others will not.
9 What do I learn when I listen to stories? I learn words and sounds. I learn that words can be put together to say something meaningful. I learn that stories build language skills. I learn stories build listening skills. I learn to practice using my imagination. I learn sequencing. I learn about memorization. I learn to share ideas and to role play.
10 What do I learn when I make a collage? I learn that different materials feel different. I learn to identify colors, shapes, textures, patterns, and sizes. I learn about decision-making by being able to choose materials I like, and arrange them according to my interest. I develop self-expression.
