2 Background Central Glasshouse Services is a facility of the Faculty of Science We support many Schools and Institutes across the University Plant growth facilities and services are supplied at St Lucia and Long Pocket campuses
3 Facility Services We provide a range of amenities and plant growth facilities on a user pays system General evaporative cooled glasshouses General temperature controlled glasshouses PC2 and quarantine glasshouses Growth cabinets and outdoor growing areas Root washing and preparation area We also offer a wide range of equipment and consumables For further information please see the website
4 Staff Services We provide a range of staff support services, such as; Clean and ready to use plant growth space Plant husbandry advice Monitoring and recording of facility temperature levels PC2 and Quarantine facility compliance We provide a range of chargeable services, such as; Plant watering Forklift and Bobcat driving Pest control Cleaning For further information please see the Glasshouse website

6 Access and Security Access Keys will be provided for general glasshouses upon commencement of facility use Security Please ensure that gates and glasshouse doors remain locked when unoccupied Please report any suspicious activity or breakages to the Glasshouse staff or Security After hours The facility is accessible at all times Guidelines exist for students working after hours Please consult your supervisor and the OHS guidelines for further information
7 Client requirements Code of conduct As a Glasshouse client, we require that you: Provide details of your research requirements to the Glasshouse manager Follow the direction of Glasshouse staff at all times Do not remove or touch any equipment from other projects Do not alter or disassemble Glasshouse plant facilities and equipment Ensure all visitors are directly supervised by a UQ Glasshouse inducted employee Maintain safe work practices at all times
8 Client requirements Safety and hygiene As a Glasshouse client, we require that you: Keep your area clean Report any safety issues to the Glasshouse staff Monitor plants for pests and diseases and report them to Glasshouse staff o All pesticide applications must be carried out by glasshouse staff Wear appropriate sun protection when entering Glasshouse facilities Wear appropriate PPE when handling soils, potting media and chemicals Wear appropriate footwear when entering Glasshouse facilities

11 Client requirements Waste As a Glasshouse client, we require that you: Ensure all waste is disposed of correctly o General waste Large green wheelie bins o Sharps waste Yellow sharps containers o Biohazard waste Large yellow wheelie bins general waste sharps waste biohazard waste o Chemical waste Contact the Chemical Store o Soil and plant waste Soil dump o Contaminated soil/plant waste As per regulations Biohazard waste bins must remain locked o Keys are available from glasshouse staff Soil delivery bins must not be used as general waste bins soil dump soil delivery laboratory bin o Soil bins may be red, grey or green
12 Additional supervisor requirements As supervisors of staff, we require that you ensure your staff and students: Are appropriately equipped and dressed for working in the Glasshouses Have completed all appropriate training for safe work practices in the Glasshouses Are supplied with all materials and equipment required for the project Maintain safe work practices
13 Emergencies For all emergencies, call Security first on Next, call Glasshouse staff on First aid supplies are available in the Headhouse (Bld 89E) Please contact Glasshouse staff for first aid assistance

16 PC2 client requirements Code of conduct As a PC2 facility client, we require that you: Ensure all work in PC2 glasshouses is carried out as though the plants are GMO o Discuss use of PC2 Glasshouse for non-gmo plants with the Glasshouse Manager o Notify the Biosafety Advisor by ing biosafety@uq.edu.au. Keep anterooms clear at all times Ensure nothing is stored on the floor in PC2 glasshouses anteroom
17 PC2 client requirements Safety and hygiene As a PC2 Glasshouse facility client, we require that you: Keep your area and equipment clean Ensure appropriate PPE is worn in PC2 Glasshouses Ensure lab coats are removed before leaving the PC2 glasshouses, placed in a sealed container and taken back to your PC2 lab for disinfecting and disinfesting Dispose of your gloves in the biohazard bins prior to departing the Glasshouse Wash hands with hand sanitizers/soap provided

19 PC2 client requirements Record keeping and experiment identification As a PC2 Glasshouse facility client, we require that you: Ensure all experiments are clearly labeled with: o Name o lab phone number, o start date and expected finish date Ensure each pot is labeled with o the GMO, Timmy O Tool Fake Lab Mob: Start date: 01/01/14 Finish date: 30/04/14 Automated watering only 8:00am and 4:00pm o NLRD number, o start and finish date GMO NLRD Start date Finish date Sorghum /01/14 30/04/14
20 PC2 client requirements Waste As a PC2 Glasshouse facility client, we require that you: Ensure all waste is disposed of correctly o Sharps waste Yellow sharps containers o Biohazard waste Large yellow wheelie bins o Chemical waste Contact the Chemical Store Minimise waste going down the drains Ensure all PC2 biohazard waste is double bagged, sealing each bag individually, and placed into a yellow biohazard bin o All bins must remain locked o Keys are available from Glasshouse staff Ensure biohazard bins are moved to pickup point for collection when full (on ramp to Glasshouse 5) o Assistance can be provided if requested

22 Additional PC2 supervisor requirements As supervisors of staff, we require that you ensure your staff and students: Are aware of PC2 regulations and permit conditions Are aware of record keeping requirements and ensure that all records are accurate and current Are aware that any work that has the potential to create aerosols, should be discussed with the Biosafety advisor

24 Quarantine client requirements As a Quarantine Glasshouse facility client, we require that you: Ensure lab coats are worn in Quarantine glasshouses Ensure lab coats are removed before leaving the Quarantine Glasshouses, placed in a sealed container and taken back to your Quarantine lab for disinfecting and disinfesting Keep anterooms clear at all times Footbaths must be used upon entry and exit Follow the terms and conditions of your permit Read and understand the Quarantine Glasshouse SOP o Discuss with Glasshouse staff
25 Quarantine client requirements Record Keeping As a Quarantine facility client, we require that you: Ensure all records are kept up to date in the yellow folder in the Quarantine Glasshouse o Permit o Transport records o Plant dealing form o Room entry records o QAPAP training certificate o Quarantine SOP
