1 WIP 2017 PROJECT NAME Xiamen Baitang Bay Resort CHALLENGE: This project will be the first resort in Baitang Bay, part of a larger development plan which will create an exciting seaside tourist destination. As the first project to be developed, we need to set the tone for the future development our aim is to create a leisurely and contemporary tropical architecture. The site itself is very irregular, long and narrow in shape. While the views and terrain provide a wonderful context for a resort, planning the circulation and function spaces requires careful work to fit the restrictive site. STRATEGY: PROJECT LOCATION: Xiamen TEAM: Bin Cao White Wang Kang Yu Joyce Shao Shaun Shi Samuel Reilly As a seaside resort in verdant southeast China, this is a project about the experience of water. The broad flowing lines of the design mimic the feel of flowing currents, and the shimmering facade reflects the play of waves on the sea. From the details to the overall form, this resort will be an immersive experience about the sea. In the humid subtropical climate of Xiamen ample ventilation and protection from solar heat gain are the most essential sustainable strategies. The broad overhanging balconies protect the hotel guestrooms from direct sunlight while providing excellent views. The long narrow form of the buildings allows excellent cross ventilation by the strong sea breeze. Sweeping roofs along the podium provide roof garden space for guests while shading the function rooms from direct sunlight and heat gain. RESULTS/IMPACT: This project is already under construction. 6 DREAM OF AQUA NATURAL MATERIAL The material pallet reflects the qualities of Baitang Bay s natural setting. Warm golden sandstone complements the sandy beaches, while natural and lacquered wood accent recall the historic sail ships for which Xiamen was once famous. Curving glazed facades and a patterned waterfall curtainwall imitate the soft blue waves of the nearby sea.
