1 April 2016 Newsletter This has got to spring. The winter debris mostly cleaned up. The soil is ready. Plans are made! The seedlings are pushing their way out of pots. Oh no, the nametags are gone! This has happened before, driving me to the edge. Where s my lists? I say, there is no response, There is no holy finger from the above pointing and identifying each group. 2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Here goes my last Presidents letter! I have so enjoyed this last week's spring weather! A lot of wild flowers are in bloom and I am anxious to share their beauty with all of you. The date of my garden tour has changed from the end of May to Saturday April 30 th from AM, All are welcome. Included is a picture of one of my Hepaticas (Liverwort ) See you at the potluck! Gerda Heathcote! The May Birth Flower is the Lily of the Valley Meaning: Sweetness and Humility May Birthstone: The Emerald Zodiac and Dates: Taurus April 21 May 20 Characteristics: Affectionate, Reliable, Ambitious, Practical, Patient The Language of the Flowers The language of the Victorian era. The Victorians were strongly restricted by the rules of etiquette when it was considered totally inappropriate to express feelings of love or affection. The "Language of Flowers" therefore evolved when a message was assigned to specific flowers. A lover could then send flowers which conveyed a hidden romantic meaning. Program Big Trees presented by Kevin Martin Break for Snacks and Socializing Old Business Treasurer Report - approved. Nominating Committee - All positions are filled, except for president. New Business Horticultural Report - Joan Bonnette gave us information on digging up perennials. Member Garden Tours - Gerda invited us to view her garden in May. Tina Ruffo invited us to view her garden in July. Gary has also invited us to view his garden. The dates have not been set yet. Public Garden Spring Cleanups - Signup sheets were passed around. May Pot Luck - Signup sheets for food were passed around. Members were requested to bring extra empty pots to the May General Meeting. Summer Field Trips - A trip to a conifer garden is set for Saturday, July 16. A trip to Tower Hill has scheduled for August 6. The date for the trip to the Moonlight Meadery was not been set, The meeting was adjourned at 9:00. Respectively submitted, Chris Washco 3

4 UPCOMING EVENTS Member s Garden Tours Here s our chance to see what people are all talking about. Gerda Heathcote invites all to view her Gardens April 30 th, if there is no snow. Her address is 19 Campbell Drive, Litchfield, NH arrive 10AM to noon. (There is no word yet if Gerda is going to serve us cookies) Tina Rufo is showing off her garden starting at 10 AM to after noon. The date is July 9 th and the address is 21 Bradford Street, Nashua Gary Dallas-Koziol Plans to unveil his gardening wizardry for all to see and envy. The 25 th of June is the day between 10AM and Noon. - This year Saturday August 5 th there is an event of visiting Tower Hill Botanic Garden, - Their website shows how special this garden really is. Reservatios are needed, contact Erica Macado - ~Meet at Bob s parking lot on Amherst 9AM. NASHUA GARDEN UPDATES HOSPICE HOUSE Millie Giles (Secret plans, to be revealed later) Humane Society Tina Ruffo This year s clean-up went fine The dogs are howling, the cats are purring. What a fun group of volunteers! 4

5 SENSORY GARDEN AT GREELEY PARK UPDATE We would like to thank everyone that came out in the chilly weather on April 19 to help clean up the Sensory Garden. With your help it went from drab to "Fab!" Special thanks to Judie for contacting the Nashua Parks & Recreation to have the stone dust and mulch ready for us to spread. Really adds a finishing touch. Thanks to Gerda, Gary and all that have done this before that helped direct the clean up. Work is was, but fun work! Crew: Cherie, Teri, Brenda + son, Gary, colleen, Gerda, Judie. Eileen Vandenburgh & Karen Salmon * Chairpersons RECIPIES FROM OUR MEMBERS Healthy Cream of Broccoli Soup Recipe Submitted by Ann Barker Many American children today have been so exposed to processed junk and fast foods that they simply turn away from whole foods, particularly green leafy vegetables. They find the natural taste of these greens simply off-putting which is actually a shame, as vegetables are among the most nutritionally dense foods on the planet. Ingredients 1 head of broccoli (steamed and cut into smaller pieces) 4 ½ cups chicken broth 2 to 3 Hass avocados 1 cup of shredded raw cheddar (you can certainly add more if you want to) Salt and pepper to taste Procedure: This recipe makes 4 servings. Steam broccoli for 4 to 5 minutes, let cool, and then cut up. Combine broccoli, chicken broth, and avocados, and blend to desired consistency. Cook over medium heat until thoroughly warmed, and add cheese. Stir well. 5
