LAYOUT - DESIGN Establishing sight lines can help add to the success of a space where people gather. Special consideration should be taken to analyze both vertical + horizontal lines, to create a unique place with intangible qualities. COLORED CONCRETE PAVING When project budgets are limited, colored or textured concrete is an excellent way to add value to a space. Also, concrete can help areas where drainage issues are present due to high ground water table or extreme flatness. CONCRETE SEATWALL An excellent way to add informal seating to an area as well as provide the opportunity for site signage. These features can also be used for grade control + bring users closer to various plant materials throughout the site.
BIO-RENTENTION AREAS Stormwater is directed to the basin and then percolates through the system where it is treated by a number of physical, chemical and biological processes. The slowed, cleaned water is allowed to infiltrate native soils, or directed to nearby stormwater drains, or receiving waters. TREE TRENCHES A stormwater tree trench is a system of trees that are connected by an underground infiltration structure. This system is composed of a trench excavated along the sidewalk, lined with a permeable geotextile fabric, filled with stone or gravel, and topped off with soil and trees. NATIVE LANDSCAPING Native plants help to increase the local population of native plant species, providing numerous benefits. There are specific associations of mycorrhizae with plants, invertebrates with woody debris, pollinators with flowers, and birds with structural habitat that can only be rebuilt by planting native plant material.

Betula platyphylla Fargo Dakota Pinnacle Birch A fantastic new introduction from North Dakota that s hardier than the species; smooth white bark, spire-like columnar habit of growth, quite dense, great for skyline articulation; insect resistant and drought tolerant. Rhus aromatica Gro-Low Sumac This fragrant sumac cultivar is a dense, low-growing, rambling shrub which spreads by root suckers and typically grows only to - tall but spreads to 8 wide. Trifoliate, medium green leaves turn attractive shades of orange and red in autumn. Leaves and twigs are aromatic when bruised (hence the species name). Fruit is attractive to wildlife. Juniperus virginiana Grey Owl Finely textured evergreen shrub with arching branches clothed with soft, silvery-gray needles. Very effective as a tall groundcover when planted in masses and is also suitable for partially shaded areas as well. Requires little maintenance and is drought tolerant once established. Equisetum hyemale Scouring Rush This species features rigid, rough, hollow, vertically-ridged, jointedand-segmented, bamboo-like, dark green stems (to / diameter at the base) which rise up from the plant rhizomes. Each stem node (joint) is effectively marked by a whorl of tiny, stem-clasping, scalelike leaves which are fused into an ash-gray sheath (/ long) ending in a fringe of teeth. Echinacea purpurea Kim s Kim s Knee High Purple Coneflower A wonderful dwarf form of this popular perennial with rosepink, drooping flower petals surrounding an orange center. A well behaved, easy to grow native perennial that is favored by butterflies. PLANT MATERIAL SELECTION
Goldsturm Black- Eyed Susan Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii Goldsturm A colorful, fuss-free border plant and excellent choice for cut flowers. Bright, daisy-like, golden yellow flowers with black centers cover the dark green foliage. Tolerates heat, humidity, and clay soil. Honored as the 999 Perennial Plant of the Year. Herbaceous perennial. Liatris pycnostachya Prairie Blazingstar This is one of the few Liatris species that grows well in moist soils and in clay. For good plant growth sun and adequate moisture are required: dry conditions can cause leaf loss and too little sun may cause twisted growth. Blooming from July through August it is excellent in perennial borders, cutting gardens, prairie gardens or naturalized areas. Panicum virgatum Shenandoah Shenandoah Switch Grass Prized for its unmatched foliage color. Fast growing green leaves emerge with red tips in spring, darkening through summer, and turning burgundy in fall. Airy reddish-pink flowers in summer. Use for mass background plantings or in containers. Herbaceous perennial. Sporobolus heterolepis Prairie Dropseed A fine-textured grass for the landscape with tall, slender stalks that display airy, remarkably fragrant, late summer panicles. Dense, mounded foliage turns deep copper-gold in fall. Attractive accent, or easy care ground cover, if planted in mass. Long-lived and trouble free. Rarely self-seeds. Deciduous. Schizachyrium scoparium Blue Heaven Little Bluestem Narrow, upright, grassy foliage makes a great vertical accent for a border or container. Emerges blue, develops pink and burgundy hues in late summer, and turns a rich copper in fall. Slender stems rise up with purplish panicles. Tan seed heads persist into fall. Perfect for bird-friendly landscapes. PLANT MATERIAL SELECTION
Litter + Recycle Receptacles Public spaces often see a lot of pedestrian traffic. Whether it s over the lunch hour, or a summer festival, people tend to find themselves needing to dispose of their litter from time-to-time. Durable receptacles, that add some visual interest, can be a useful way of being practical and adding some character to a space at the same time. Light Fixtures + Poles Contemporary light fixtures + poles can add a unique feel to any space. They also provide a sense of safety and make spaces more useful throughout the day with the use of LED fixtures, which provide better lighting practices, more efficient use of energy and reduce maintenance. Bollards Lighting and controlling access all-in-one; bollards can make a statement in any urban space. Whether it s a contemporary design, or a more traditional look, they can define circulation, provide safety and lighting, or just be a visual element that makes a space unique. Bike Racks More and more people are biking these days and providing bike parking is critical to the success of promoting alternate ways for people to get around town. The contemporary take on this classic site furnishing also brings an updated look to any space, which in it s own way also helps encourage more people to get back in the saddle. Benches The bench is also a classic site furnishing that has many traditional options, as well as several with a more updated look. Successful urban spaces draw people in; and once people are in a space they eventually need some places to rest to keep them there. Having multiple options for seating can be a very effective way to encourage people to visit and even stay a while and enjoy the day. SITE FURNISHINGS
