Support of the Society through these donations provides funding for the continued development of the largest nonprofit educational organization dedicated to all aspects of the Rose. The ARS is exempt from federal income taxation under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code and contributions to the Society are tax deductible to the donor as provided by law. 5 AMERICAN ROSE SOCIETY PATRON PROGRAM The ARS is exempt from federal income taxation under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and contributions are tax deductible to donors as provided by law. Since 1974, generous members of the American Rose Society have helped ARS balance the budget with their donations to the Patron Program. Revenue from membership dues now represents only about 36% of our total operating income. Patron donations have always been important to the Society, but in recent years have become increasingly important to the society s future, and have often made the difference in our being able to provide basic services to local societies and members. Many Local Societies and ARS Districts have generously set aside funds to contribute to the Patron Program each year. Many businesses, ARS advertisers and partners are Patrons as well. We think of our Patrons as CHAMPIONS those members and friends who have gone the extra mile through their membership and their support for the Society. Patrons receive a beautiful Patron pin that distinguishes them as major supporters of the Society, and they are acknowledged by name in the American Rose magazine. 7 AMERICAN ROSE SOCIETY ENDOWMENT FUNDS This begins a series outlining opportunities for making Charitable Gifts to the American Rose Society, the Gardens of the American Rose Center, the ARS Endowments, operating funds, capital improvements and ongoing educational programs. The series will include information on gifts through bequests, estate planning, pledges and outright gifts; it will include information on making gifts of cash, real estate, stocks, bonds and other investment securities, life insurance and retirement funds assets; and it will include naming opportunities for specific donations. With this issue, we are featuring the ARS family of Endowment Funds. AMERICAN ROSE SOCIETY ENDOWMENT TRUST The Society has set a goal to raise $1,000,000 for the new American Rose Society Endowment Trust, and therefore, gifts to the ARSET are at the top of list of priorities. Recognizing that membership dues are not sufficient to fund society operations, in 2006, the ARS Board of Directors approved the creation of an endowment to provide perpetual support for the Society. Under terms of the Trust, no part of the principal may be invaded, but all interest, earnings and gain from the investments of the Trust shall be dedicated to the educational mission of the society and its operation. AMERICAN ROSE SOCIETY EDUCATIONAL ENDOWMENT TRUST This trust is created exclusively to provide funds for the development, publication and distribution of educational materials on the culture of the rose, the establishment and advancement of local rose societies and otherwise for the benefit of the American Rose Society. It is the intent of this Trust to provide funds for special educational or development projects and not for ordinary operating expenses incurred by Society. AMERICAN ROSE SOCIETY RESEARCH ENDOWMENT TRUST This trust is created exclusively to provide funds for research on the historical origin, identification, breeding and culture of the rose and otherwise for the benefit of and to carry out the purpose of the American Rose Society. 8 AMERICAN ROSE SOCIETY MAINTENANCE ENDOWMENT TRUST This Trust is created exclusively to provide a perpetual endowment for the maintenance, development, and improvement of the American Rose Center and to carry out the purpose of the American Rose Society. For purposes of this Trust, the words the American Rose Center mean the approximate 120 acres of land owed by the American Rose Society in Caddo Parish, Louisiana, and all improvements thereto, including but not limited to fences, walks, streets, driveways, parking lots, plumbing, lighting, timber, landscape ornaments, and ornamental plants. The Trust was originally established to maintain the gardens only, but was amended in 1999 to include all buildings and structures. The ARS is exempt from federal income taxation under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and contributions are tax deductible to donors as provided by law. All donations to the Society are acknowledged in American Rose; ARS notifies recipients of all gifts received in their honor; and notifies family members of gifts received as memorials. A nature trail or arboretum on the property would attract families, Scouts, birding enthusiasts, arborists and provide opportunities for events and community involvement. Naming Opportunity WALKING PATHS Amount to be determined Walking Paths throughout the Gardens of the American Rose Center are in need of repair. Donation may be made for all paths throughout the gardens, or for designated sections which will be named as the donor wishes. Naming Opportunity ISLAND OF CLASSIC SOUTHERN GARDEN SHRUBS...$2,500 Planting of islands of shrubs throughout the gardens, to bring year-round interest, to draw birds and butterflies, birding and butterfly enthusiasts, and to break up large open expanses of the gardens; to include varieties of hollies, sasanquas and camellias, sweet olive, vitex, crepe myrtle, and other classic Southern Garden trees and plants. 11 ISLAND OF OLD GARDEN ROSES in the Heritage Rose Foundation Garden $5,000 Planting of islands of Teas, Chinas, Bourbons, Hybrid Musks, etc. among the Heritage Rose Foundation Garden at the ARC. Includes one garden feature; stone bench, bird bath, sun dial or armillary sphere. Includes bronze plaque. Naming Opportunity GARDEN FEATURES: stone bench; bird baths; sun dial; armillary sphere. We can provide suggestions on request. All garden features must be presented for approval by the ARC Committee Review Board: Executive Director, Klima Director, Curator and Chair of the ARC Subcommittee on Development. GARDEN EQUIPMENT: Funds for, or outright donations of garden equipment are welcome and always needed. Tractor, mower, string trimmer, chain saw, truck, trailer, utility vehicle, tour carts, garden tools, fertilizer and garden products are included on the long list of needs. FOR KLIMA ROSE HALL, the ARS Education and Visitor Center EDUCATION STATION Amount to be determined An alcove at Klima Rose Hall is ready for the installation of a touch screen computer station for educational programs. Programs might include a map of gardens; list and description of all individual gardens; list of entire rose collection with individual rose varieties located on garden map; history of the rose and history of the American Rose Society; list of books in the Schorr Rose Horticulture & Research Library; AARS winners and their location within the gardens; children s page with did you know? section, etc. Naming Opportunity CERAMIC STONE TILE for floor of Whitaker Hall of Honors at Klima Rose Hall..$1, x18 Includes freight, installation and engraving; allows 6 lines of text, up to 15 characters per line. BRICK PAVER in floor at Carruthers Court, the entry court at Klima Rose Hall. $250 4 x 8, engraved up to 39 characters; 3 lines with up to 13 characters per line. TEAKWOOD BENCH by Smith & Hawken for interior only; includes engraved plaque...$1500 INTERIOR FURNISHINGS. We will accept paintings, sculptures, furniture, and other décor for Klima Rose Hall. Must be approved by the ARC Committee Review Board: Executive Director, Klima Director, Curator and Chair of the ARC Subcommittee on Development. ROSE BOOKS AND PAPERS. We are building a very fine collection of rose horticulture books at the Schorr Rose Horticulture & Research Library, and we welcome donations of individual books or whole collections. We also welcome cash donations to the Library for shelving, book purchases and preservation of rare books and printed materials. FOR THIGPEN-HEROLD ADMINISTRATION BUILDING RECEPTION LOBBY at the Thigpen-Herold Administration Building Amount to be determined Refurbishing and furnishing of the lobby of the ARS headquarters administration building. The building houses the staff and all ARS and ARC operations. The Reception Lobby is beautiful and spacious. This donation will present a naming opportunity for the donor or in memory of someone. 12 MUSEUM OF THE ROSE at the Thigpen-Herold Administration Building.Amount to be determined The ARS owns many valuable paintings, porcelain pieces, historical photos, and documents related to the organization (c. 1892) and the rose. A Museum of the Rose would be a popular attraction and very handsome space exists to house the museum within the Administration Building. Naming Opportunity CASH OR PLEDGES As always, cash for operations of the Gardens of the American Rose Center are welcome, and all will be recognized and acknowledged. We also welcome pledges which can be paid over a period of years. 13 Opportunities for Service to the ARS Family of Rose Societies One of the greatest gifts one can give to the Rose Society both nationally and locally is service. The American Rose Society has been sustained for 116 years by the service of perhaps hundreds of thousands of volunteer members. Yes, there have been paid staffs through the years. But it has been the enthusiasm, the love for the Rose, the willingness to lead and to sacrifice time and energy by those legions of heroes that have helped to perpetuate the Society to this day. It is the dedication of members like you who will make it possible to continue the valuable work we do in support of the Rose and all who grow it well into the future. Within these Guidelines, you have viewed the network of the Society. At the top is the national organization - the American Rose Society, which serves a large membership base of rosarians in providing rose horticulture education and information. That is our mission. Within the ARS, there are approximately 40 committees that help to fulfill the mission and goals of the Society. They are led by volunteers who are appointed by the member-elected president. These committees are also served by several thousand committee members, who have a wide range of rose-related interests where they can choose to contribute and lend their special talents and interests. These committees include Bylaws, Classification, Consulting Rosarians, Finance, Fund Raising, Judging, Membership, Marketing, Miniatures, Old Garden Roses, Photography, Prizes and Awards, Public Gardens, Youth, and many, many other areas. The American Rose Society is the ultimate authority on all aspects of the Rose. The Society produces numerous publications, newsletters, books, articles and other resources that serve to educate our members and the public about the many aspects of rose culture and the ease and joy of cultivating and living with roses in our gardens. Your contribution to Educational Programs and Services will help us further the educational goals and programs of the organization. So, tell us your story, write about your garden, share your rose or rose garden photographs. At times, ARS may have a need for specialty services, such as an illustrator, photographer, lawyer, youth leader, editor or proof-reader might provide. In addition to supporting ARS members and rose interests around the world, the American Rose Society also supports several hundred local affiliates around the country our Local Rose Societies. A person who demonstrates that he or she is dependable, capable, and interested in a leadership role will (and should) always find it. Our societies need new leaders who are willing to serve, and we need a good supply of them. There is room for many! There is no limit to the heights one can grow within the organization, and you will surprised how many new friends you will make along the way. Section VII Page 13

14 Within these local societies, there are many opportunities for service to the Rose. A member might begin his or her service by taking on one or more jobs to help with the society s rose show. After several years of helping put on a great show, that member might be selected to serve as rose show chairman. A leader is in the making. Service to the society might begin with accepting the chairmanship of program planning for the society. Good programs are, after all, one of the factors that keep a rose society thriving. A potential leader has an opportunity to demonstrate creativity and resourcefulness in that area. A leader is being developed. The ARS Consulting Rosarian program offers a great opportunity for service. One can prepare for the position, assume the title, and then wait for someone to call for advice. Or, one can create opportunities to tell people about roses. One can present a program for your society or a local garden club, or assist a favorite nursery by being on hand to discuss varieties and rose care. One can participate in the maintenance of a public rose garden. When you organize a team of volunteers to help, you are a leader. A good leader brings out the bests in others, and seeks ways to encourage others to make contributions. A good leader helps to create leaders. It is important at the local level, the district level, and the national level that we constantly build leadership among our members. Ultimately, the good leader encourages others to grow roses, and to grow them successfully, for only when new rose growers succeed will we grow in our ranks. The American Rose Society, Local Affiliate Societies, and the Local Society Relations Committee are committed to supporting leaders who want to grow within the organization. We recognize that service is the greatest gift you can give to the Rose and to the Rose Society. 15 WHEN SOMEONE ASKS HOW CAN I HELP? Local Society leaders may ask, or be asked How can I help the American Rose Society? The American Rose Society is funded mainly through memberships, but also through special projects, interest from endowments and by contributions from ARS members and rose lovers throughout the world. Programs listed here include a variety of ways a local society can support the national organization, and ways it can encourage others to d so. MEMBERSHIP Membership is the lifeblood of the American Rose Society. ARS offers Individual Memberships, Joint Membership for two members of the same household, Senior Memberships, and Youth Memberships. We offer one, two and three year terms as well as Life. ARS offers Corporate Memberships and Foreign Memberships. As you can see, there are many memberships for everyone and every situation (See Section III for more information). Just as the ARS staff and related committees work to support local societies in their membership efforts, local society leaders are encouraged to support the ARS in its efforts to grow in membership. It is thought that only one-third of local societies members are also members of the ARS. As local society members grow in their rose hobby, they should be encouraged to join the ARS for many benefits that are afforded by the parent organization. GIFT MEMBERSHIPS Local Societies are encouraged to purchase three ARS memberships per year to be used as awards, raffle prizes, or in other creative ways. Leaders are also asked to encourage gift memberships during holidays and for special occasions. LIBRARY SUBSCRIPTIONS Local Societies are asked to donate any American Rose subscription to your local library. By making the American Rose available to the library, readers will become aware of the existence of the society, and can locate your local society through that contact. (ARS has a special Library Subscription rate. Contact headquarters for details). GIFTS TO THE SOCIETY In addition to the annual dues local societies remit to the ARS, local societies may have opportunities to make additional contributions: The ARS Patron Program offers a category for local society Patron donations. Many societies participate annually in the Patron program and those societies are recognized in the American Rose. Section VII Page 15
