Enjoy a 10th anniversary cupcake, network and visit vendors. 1:00-1:45 Break-out Session #2 1:45-2:00 Visit with Vendors 2:00-2:45 Break-out Session #3 Vendors include: Copper Penny Garlic Farm, Creative Visual Workshop, Dean Piehl Woodworks, Gerry s Garden, Laura Gramer Service Dog Fundraiser (Handmade Woodburning), Lemon Blossom Fairy Soaps, Link s Greenhouse and Farm, New Life Lavender and Cherry Farm, Portage Friends of the Library, R & B Farm, Stone-Crete Company & Sweet Wisconsin Honey Farm (others may be added). Vendors will be donating door prizes. Drawing will be held during Session 2 and posted by end of Session 3. Garden book and magazine swap in gymnasium. Bring yours to the exchange table; you do not have to bring an item to take an item!
3 BREAKOUT SESSION 1: 11:00-11:45 AM MGV = Master Gardener Volunteer A Gardening in a Changing Climate- Gardeners are keenly aware of the effects of climate change. Learn more about what this means and how to respond with Margaret Mooney, Education and Public Outreach Director at CIMSS. B Dr. Death s 2018 Plant Disease Forecast- Brian Hudelson, aka Dr. Death, from the UW Extension Plant Diagnostic Lab, will give us a preview of what to expect this gardening season. C The Art of Growing Bonsai- Growing Bonsai is a unique combination of art and horticulture. Learn from Karl Bethke, president of the Badger Bonsai Society on how to choose, style and care for bonsai materials. D Free Plants!- Cal Bouwkamp, Horticulture Educator, will explain the why s and how s of plant propagation. You will take home several plants propagated during this session. (Limit: 20 participants) E Plants Need Food, Too!- Jeff Breuer, MGV, shares the latest dirt on managing the fertility of your soil or potting mix to grow healthy, productive plants. F Gardening 101- Gain gardening confidence with MGV Becky Gutzman who will help you plan, prepare and plant your garden. Site, seeds and soil will all be covered. G Tree Roundtable- Paul Bergum, MGV, will share his extensive knowledge of trees and lead this interactive discussion. Participants are encouraged to bring their tree related questions and join the discussion. H Rose Care- What better way to enjoy the beauty of the garden than by growing roses! Ann Marie Fuerst, MGV, will share her knowledge of growing and caring for roses, including the many varieties to choose from today. I The Life of a Gourd in the Art World- Barb Rothwell, MGV, shows how to grow, cure and clean gourds. Learn simple techniques to help you successfully grow gourds and turn them into beautiful and useful items. Take home seeds to grow your own. J. Lovely Lavender- Lavender has long been enjoyed in the garden for its scent as well as many household uses. Join Laura McReynolds of New Life Lavender and Cherry Farm near Baraboo to learn how to grow and enjoy lavender in your garden.
4 BREAKOUT SESSION 2: 1:00 1:45 pm K Fairy Garden Magic- Cathy Wendt, Fairy Garden aficionado, will share her expertise in creating and maintaining these miniature gardens. In this make and take class all supplies will be provided. Please include an extra $10 material fee. (Limit: 15 participants) *(also offered in Session 3) L Flower Arranging for Beginners- In this make and take class, you will learn the basics of flower arranging and create a long-lasting silk arrangement with MGV Jane Breuer. Please include an extra $10 material fee. (Limit: 15 participants) *(also offered in Session 3) M What Is Horticulture Therapy- Avid gardeners know the benefits of plants on their minds and bodies; how can America s #1 past time be used as a therapeutic intervention for people with special needs? Led by Mike Maddox, UW-Extension Master Gardener Program Director. N Let It Rot!- Becky Gutzman, MGV, will stir up your enthusiasm for composting at home. Learn how she makes black gold to enrich her garden from kitchen and yard waste. What can you compost and what should be avoided? O Could I, Wood I, Should I Prune That Woody Plant?- Paul Bergum, MGV will help you answer the questions of when, where, how and why to prune your plants. P Microgreen Giants Ardyce Piehl, MGV, will show you that tiny microgreens pack a giant nutritional punch! In this make and take class, you will plant a reusable microgreen planter to produce fresh greens all year round. (Limit: 20 participants) Q Cold Frames and Hot Houses- Bill Link of Link s Greenhouse and Farm will share how these two methods from the past can help you extend the growing season by sheltering plants in both the early spring and in the fall. R Container Gardening- Garden Spaces In Small Places- Who doesn t love a container filled with beautiful flowers or overflowing with vegetables? Learn how to grow these without a garden with MGV Kathy Delaney. S Terrific Tomatoes- Tomatoes continue to be the #1 veggie grown by home gardeners. George Koepp, UW Extension Ag Educator, will share tips for selecting and growing the best varieties for Wisconsin and for dealing with diseases and pests of this favorite plant. T Happy Houseplants!- Spending a little green on some green for your home can have many benefits! Learn from MGV Leah Stark about plant choice, growing conditions and care for happy and healthy houseplants.

It s important for us to learn where they are and slow their spread. Bernie Williams, WI-DNR will help us learn the differences between our native species and this invader. X Forestry Invasives and Oak Wilt- Threats from invasive plants, animals, insects, fungi and diseases can affect the health of our forests and landscape trees. Learn what to look for with Jodie Ellis of WI-DNR. Y Organic Gardening Techniques- Kate and Tyler Rowe, Burr Oak Gardens, LLC, share lessons they have learned while growing their crops organically, including fertilizing, weed and insect control. Z Gardening 101- Gain gardening confidence with MGV Becky Gutzman who will help you plan, prepare and plant your garden. Site, seeds and soil will be covered. AA Using LED Lights Instead of a Greenhouse- Technology of LED lights for growing has greatly improved and become very reasonable in cost. Cal Bouwkamp, Ag Educator, will explore using LEDs to maximize plant production for the least cost. BB What s Brewing?- George Koepp, UW Extension Ag Educator, will share how to plant, grow, harvest, smell, and drink hops; a short guide to growing your own beer flavors! Learn how to have fun growing a very tall perennial. CC Timely Tool Care- Tool care is an important, but often overlooked activity. Bill Damm, MGV, will help you choose the right tool for the job, and share the proper methods to prolong the life of your tools and how to keep them sharp for easier, safer use. DD Growing Grapes in Wisconsin- Pete Gauer from Full Moon Vineyard, Poynette, will help you choose, plant and care for grape varieties that work well in Wisconsin. He will demonstrate pruning techniques with Q and A time.
6 What is the Master Gardener Program? Master Gardener Volunteers are trained individuals who aid UW- Extension staff by helping people in the community better understand horticulture and their environment. This national program was introduced to Wisconsin in Today the Master Gardener program is available in all 50 states and several countries. In the Master Gardener program, you receive 36 hours of horticultural training with UW-Extension specialists and faculty and local experts. The course fee includes instructional materials, which you keep. To become a certified Master Gardener Volunteer, you must attend the designated training sessions, pass a final exam, and provide at least 24 hours of volunteer service in your community. To remain certified, each year you will need to acquire 10 hours of continuing education and volunteer a minimum of 24 hours. What you can do as a Master Gardener Volunteer: Be a Community Garden mentor, organizer; Present at horticultural workshops and talks; Assist with horticultural therapy projects; Organize or manage farmer s markets; Answering telephone inquiries for horticultural information; Write newspaper gardening columns; Teach elementary classrooms Micro-farm project; Volunteer at your county Extension office; Work at local parks or assist with beautification committees; Lead youth education with 4-H, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc. Many Master Gardener Volunteers give much more time beyond the required minimum number of hours. Master Gardener Volunteers contribute thousands of hours of horticulture-related community service projects annually. If you are interested in becoming a Master Gardener Volunteer, you can contact your local Extension office.
