And rows, each like a pilgrimage, strip mall, potting table, hand-hewn contemplative bench. Because green-houses seduce us. Because we are dust of the planet & hunger for at least one stars bread. Because we lay parking lots over arbutus. Because nothing atones but we like all this digging of subsoil & root for next years original spring. Because plowshares destroy, & cold frames sweat forth a fresh crush of thyme, or onions despair all the pathos we find we invest in such passionless weeds. Because we fools want fallacys wisdom. Because gardens play dumb. Because they breathe water & make flames of air. Because we are physical. Because gardens are not. From WHY WE MAKE GARDENS (& OTHER POEMS) by Jeanne Larsen 2010 by Jeanne Larsen [published by Mayapple Press] Page 2

2 Lila Waldman, President It is surprising to see temperatures in the 80s at the end of May. The timbers on our raised garden bed needed to be replaced, so I don t have everything planted yet. We also had to replace an oak tree that we planted last year which didn t survive the winter. Thanks to Jung s for their generous return policy. All of this rain is very good for our new tree. I will be taking my middle grandchild to South Dakota on a Road Scholar trip June Therefore, I d appreciate any reservations for the June 28 Madison field trip to be paid by June 17. See trip details in another section of this newsletter. There are still spaces available. The fair committee (Jean, Ardyce, Leah, and I) met in May. We have decided on a theme of Container Gardening: The Show Goes On. We would appreciate any plantings or photos of plantings in unusual containers to use as part of the display. Remember that volunteers are needed at the fair booth and for judging. See the sign-up sheet in this newsletter. Because of the fair, there will be no formal meeting in July. The next MGV meeting will be on August 23rd and include a tour at the Arlington Agricultural Research Station. There will be details about this meeting in the August newsletter. JUNE 17th The two winners of our $500 scholarships are Brady Halbach of Portage High School and Anthony Rittmeyer of Poynette High School. You saw a photo of Sandi Bonham presenting the certificate to Brady on May 2 and Brady s thank you note and photo in last month s newsletter. On May 25, I presented the certificate to Anthony see photo to the right. Lila Waldman & Anthony Rittmeyer May 25th Remember to register for the Upper Midwest Master Gardeners Conference in Wisconsin Dells September Page 3 Page 4 More on page 1!

Lexie Stark Taylor Savich Brielle Laube Joyce s Farewell To Columbia County Master Gardener Volunteers, As many of you know by now, I will be retiring soon. My last day in the office will be June 23rd. When I first came to work at Columbia County UW-Extension, I knew nothing about Extension, Ag or the Master Gardener Program. I have gained an immense amount of knowledge about these programs, as well as all of the program areas that are a part of Extension s outreach to our community. I have enjoyed getting to know many of you, being an intricate part of your monthly newsletter, and participating in your Let s Get Green and Growing event this year. The amount of knowledge I had about gardening left a lot of room for learning and I gained that knowledge from you. I will be near my mother in my move, and she will be more than happy to continue that learning process with me. When it comes to gardening, it s amazing I m her child, because she is the ultimate Master Gardener! New Directions 4-H Club... Aubrey Rietmann Olivia Gramer Elizabeth Martens Audra Stark Elizabeth Youra North Scott 4-H Club... Megan Pomplun Sydnie Wheeler Brooke Luedtke Taylor Luedtke Anna Marie Davidson Great showing at this event, six 4-H Clubs in all! Arlington Prairie Producers & Durwards Glen also came. Page 9 I am convinced that you have the best Ag Agent in the state, George Koepp, working with you and on your behalf, and it has been my immense pleasure working with him over the last five years. Please treat him well and take advantage of all of his experience and knowledge and pass the word around about this amazing resource at Columbia County UW-Extension! Retirement is a word, not a reality for me. My husband, son and I will be moving to Colorado to be nearer our four other boys, five grandbabies and extended family. I hope whatever new employment I find will give me as much satisfaction and joy as I have found working for UW-Extension in Columbia County. Sincerely, Joyce Dunbar, Columbia County Administrative Assistant Page 10
