Nieuwkoop Europe operates on the boundary between hot and cold on a daily basis and our procedures are drawn up accordingly. On the supply side of our operation, in countries such as Costa Rica, China and Thailand, containers known as reefer containers' ensure that our plants are transported comfortably on their trip from warm countries to colder climes. This enables us to minimise wastage and to lay the basis for a strong end product. On the dispatch side of our operation, our transport planners keep a close eye on international weather conditions so that the packaging can not only be adjusted to suit the product but also the destination. Our chain partners make a significant contribution to keeping our products in perfect order by paying extra attention to the conditions in the truck or trailer during these cold winter months. In this period, the interior has priority over the exterior and this ensures that there is a natural balance. Happy reading! 3 SuStainable Cobra Nieuwkoop Europe's packaging department now has a new machine to film wrap the CC trolleys. The trolleys used to be placed on a rotating platform, but now they no longer get dizzy, as it is the Cobra that rotates around the trolleys! This hypermodern machine uses the packaging material highly efficiently. TwAn My name is Twan van Rijsbergen; I am 59 years of age and the middle child in a family of 11 children. And I was born and bred in the province of Brabant! I live in Roosendaal, in the south of the Netherlands, so I have to drive quite a way to De Kwakel: it is a distance of 100 km (there and back) every day. Can you tell us about your activities? In my capacity as quality controller at Nieuwkoop Europe, I ensure that all the articles are carefully checked before they are dispatched to the customer. How important are these checks? If I don't do my work properly, the customer could receive the wrong articles or the quality could be substandard. And nobody wants that! Apart from the fact that Nieuwkoop Europe aims for maximum customer satisfaction, the wrong order causes a great deal of extra work and costs. 4 Twan van Rijsbergen Quality controller 5

Green is also healthy and can help ease social problems such as urbanisation, ageing and air quality. The Green Agenda is a programme set up by Royal Floraholland in which knowledge institutes, entrepreneurs and companies in the sector, such as Nieuwkoop Europe, jointly develop and test innovative green ideas. Knowhow and expertise are translated into ground-breaking concepts like the 'Green Air Cleaner, which entails measuring volatile organic compounds and having plants purify the polluted air in buildings. In this case, plants are not sold, but clean air! Common interests Albert Haasnoot is the man who brings all the parties together; he is a real 'connector'. We are continually looking for parties who have common interests. One party is creative and innovative and the other has in-house expertise. This way, you combine competences that reinforce and supplement one another. Green as the solution The indoor climate in a lot of buildings is poor, which is not beneficial for people's health and well-being. Various researchers have demonstrated that plants have a positive influence on people's health and well-being and that green can therefore make a significant contribution to solving these types of problems.» Plants optimise the air humidity and purify the air of volatile organic compounds.» Less artificial climate control is necessary (which leads to lower energy costs)» and people perform better and are less likely to be absent due to sickness if there are plants in their vicinity. A study is currently being carried out to analyse the effects of green in and around hospitals on the health and well-being of patients, personnel and visitors. Plants as savings By developing and testing innovative concepts, the Green Agenda focuses on the quantification of the costs and benefits of green solutions in and around buildings. The image of plants is therefore changing because they are no longer a 'cost' but a 'saving'. The green sector now has a powerful selling point for green solutions for companies, offices and schools. 8 9

6 HOw do you generate VAlUE with A BUilding? Discussion and a prize Under the leadership of day's chair and construction innovator Atto Harsta, the speakers shared their visions of circular building and the role of green in it with the audience. The afternoon had a festive conclusion when the prize for the best Interior Plantscaping of the Year 2017 was awarded. Surprisingly often, answers to this question involve green. Into Green held the second Buildin Green convention on 2 February The convention was held at a venue that literally shows how buildings can be enhanced with plants. This time, the venue was the recently-delivered Venlo municipal office, where participants were given a guided tour. This building attracts visitors and television crews from all over the world, because it is not only about sustainability and circular construction but also about adding value. Of course, where all the materials - including the plants and their pots - will go after the building s service life has ended was already determined in advance, but the makers of this building had ambitions that reach much further than that. These ambitions included the idea of having the air leaving the building cleaner than it goes in and that the building thus 'adds value' to its environment. The question of How can we add value? was asked at every level. It is so unusual that the press and TV crews from all over the world come to Venlo to see it. At the convention, Michel Weijers and Bas van de Westerlo of the C2C Expolab, architect Hans Goverde of Kraaijvanger Architects and Hans van Cooten of Mostert de Winter talked about the idea, the special tender, the contract and the project. The participants were subsequently given an extensive guided tour of this beautiful building. Thomas Rau's circular vision Thomas Rau is an architect, an innovator, a visionary and a very popular speaker in the field of circular building. One of his most famous statements is that a building owner does not want lamps, but light. And he built and delivered his last project, the Liander office in Westervoort, on this basis. The 'passports' of all the materials used indicate their origins and redesignations and all the elements are purchased, wherever possible, as a service from the supplier. Philips will deliver light throughout the service life of the premises and will take back the lamps again at the end. 7 3 Inspiring nominations add green value Competition: interior plantscaping of the year 2017 All users appreciate green in buildings and it leads to measurably better work performances. The added value interior green can have is well demonstrated by the national Interior Plantscaping of the Year (IPotY) competition. And, furthermore, the three projects nominated show that profits can be made if interior plantscapers are involved in the design phase of a building. 10 The plants then go into the rooting chamber for 10 weeks. The high air humidity and the shade In the previous edition, we introduced the wonderful country of Costa Rica. Nieuwkoop Europe works closely with a number of nurseries in Costa Rica and imports a great many plants to the Netherlands annually. Go with us on a journey in this article and read all about the Dracaena we import. After 14 weeks, the stems are cut off the mother plant and the old leaves around the stem are removed. We continue our trip from the field to the nursery. 15 planting up Green Walls Green walls have become more and more popular in recent years. That is not so strange, because a green wall changes a bare wall into a living green oasis and who wouldn't want that? But a well-thought-out selection of plants is essential to keep a green wall looking good. For example, the amount of light in the spot in question has to be taken into account. Green walls are not usually located immediately beside a window, so opt for plants that flourish in a shady environment, such as many fern species and Philodendrons. If located in spots that have no daylight, green walls must be given extra lighting. Special lamps are available for this purpose. The height of a green wall also affects the plant choice, because the plants at the top will receive more light than those down below. The different plants must therefore be logically distributed. For a really successful wall, it is important that the plants chosen have similar water requirements, so do not combine ferns with plants that do not like being in a moist substrate all the time, such as Rhipsalis. 19 gnarled Old CHARACTERs if plants Could sing... What I miss in the plant world is the sound component. Plants give atmosphere and we now know that they also contribute to our health, but a musical touch would complete the picture as far as I am concerned. I imagine that the Monstera, with its thick leaves, would have a bass voice; the Zamioculcas, with its leafy ladder, would be a tenor, and I can just visualise the finely-leafed Dracaena 'Anita' singing in a high soprano voice. how old is this anthurium, do you think? It is undoubtedly very old because you rarely see them this tall. The striking thing about it is the fact that it is still producing flowers. It is a lovely and unusual specimen. But a camouflaged support would do it even more justice. A conductor would, of course, be needed to prevent a total cacophony in this yet-to-be realised planting project. The interior plantscaper might be just the person for the job. 20 COlOURfUl OppORTUniTiEs for young people My name is Jelle de Jong; I am 25 years old and live in the delightful city of haarlem. I started working at Nieuwkoop Europe almost immediately after my higher professional education (hbo) in Advertising, Marketing and Communication. What is your role in the nieuwkoop team? I have now been working for two years in the Marketing department where, among other things, I coordinate marketing activities, develop documentation, draw up mailings, maintain the website, prepare for trade fairs and, last but not least, make a significant contribution to our glossy! improving activities to ensure that business operations are innovative and efficient. This applies to the optimisation of our logistics processes, online marketing of products and working with data analysis. What is the situation as regards opportunities for young people in the sector? the ornamental plant sector is not exactly popular among starters on the employment market. What drew you to it? A lot of young people see the ornamental plant sector as fairly traditional and, to be honest, my first associations with the sector were not really all that trendy - but I was wrong! The image of simple growers who drove to the auction with their wares is a thing of the past. The sector has changed rapidly and is highly dynamic. Countless interesting developments are taking place that make the work enormously instructive and anything but boring! Nieuwkoop Europe is continually There are plenty of opportunities. Young people often have innovative ideas and can boost the sector. In my opinion, linking these new ideas with the existing knowhow and practical experience is the key to a successful future. What does your future look like? I strive to get the most out of myself and to be a determining factor in the success of the company by means of marketing activities. 24 THE AdVAnTAgEs Of HydROCUlTURE In 1968, Nieuwkoop Europe was one of the first suppliers of hydroculture-related equipment. Now, nearly 50 years later, hydroculture has grown considerably in popularity. And there are good reasons for that... After all, hydro plants make life a lot easier for the interior plantscaper. To begin with, granules are lighter than soil and they do not have to be replaced or topped up after a while like soil does. Another advantage is the fact that hydro plants are cultivated in smaller culture pots, so there is a larger choice of suitable planters. Hydroculture makes caring for plants easier. They only need water once every four weeks and the water level can be optimised using a water meter. You can see precisely when the plants need water and how much.
