3 Curriculum Relate the scientific method to the study of earth sciences We learned at BWD: measurements are taken from water in Beaver Lake and tributaries flowing to it data is also gathered about the stream banks, biology and erosion in those tributaries water is also tested at various stages in the processing cycle that data is analyzed to determine the health of the streams and levels of treatment required at the plant, for example it is also used to predict amounts of soil loss expected and evaluate the success of prior conservation programs and BMPs Understand how basic geologic principles relate to the origin and distribution of natural resources We learned : geology changes water after it falls as precipitation and travels through its lifecycle plants and soil can capture pollutants and allow water to percolate instead of erode soil Northwest Arkansas 3

4 Curriculum Understand how major landforms relate to geologic processes We learned: about karst topography and the increased rate of water movement and lack of filtering through it the water table as its flow relates to Beaver Lake, surrounding rivers and associated tributaries how our mainly sandstone and limestone geology contribute to relatively quick stream bank erosion Understand and appreciate the importance of three-dimensional analysis of earth structures We learned: as topology changes the rate at which water drains through the ground and surface changes, so local water table elevation and surface erosion is thus affected Appreciate the origin of major geologic hazards We learned: karst topography can cause sink holes and transport pollution through ground water flood plains grow as urbanization increases the rate at which water drains from impervious surfaces into tributaries Beaver Dam is necessary for the availability of water to sustain the large population present in Northwest Arkansas as we have no large natural reservoir for drinking water 4

6 Skills Performed video operations in an airplane at 1000ft.agl while equipped with parachute trained in the emergency use of a bail out parachute developed greater proficiency with above listed technology increased ability to prioritize goals in projects organized as a group to divide and cooperate on tasks to accomplish goals developed written, phone, visual, , public/oral and social media communication skills 6

7 Hydrology is kind of a big deal In a nutshell it is the study of water As we know, water sustains all life Did you know? Only 3.5% of Earth s water is freshwater Only.3% of freshwater (3.5% of total) exists above the ground Most of Earth s supply of freshwater are glaciers and ice caps 7

8 Beaver Water District Provides the majority of NWA with drinking water Helps sustain our ecosystem Sets guidelines to control the affects of rapid urbanization Educates the public on general facts about our water supply 8

9 Roughly 1200 square miles Sub-watershed of the White River Basin White River Basin is a sub-watershed of the Mississippi River basin Which eventually flows into the Gulf of Mexico You can imagine how the choices we make here affect several other communities as our water flows downstream 9
