2 Welcomе The Eloise Butler Wildfower Garden and Bird Sanctuary is 111 years old this year. In 1907, the Wildfower Garden was founded with a vision to create a dynamic and beautiful naturalistic, native plant focused garden for nature enthusiasts of all ages to enjoy. Te founder, Eloise Butler, was a school teacher who wanted to create a special sanctuary that students of nature could visit to learn about the intricacies and wonders of the native plants of our region. Now over a century later, her incredible legacy lives on. Free public Wildfower Garden tours take place on the weekends and during the week. Find a date that works well for you on the calendar on pages Te Nature Tots pre-school programs are a great way for younger visitors to take delight in the Garden s enchantment. Explore the Wildfower Garden at nightfall during one of the family full moon and new moons walks to see the Garden from a whole diferent perspective. Wildfower Garden Naturalists will be leading nature focused tours April-October in Regional Parks across the city. See page 15 for more information on these opportunities. We have binoculars in the Visitor Shelter for you to borrow. The Garden parking lot is a pay lot with a Pay and Display parking system. If you have a Minneapolis Parks Parking Permit sticker, you may park in any parking space. Non-permit holders may park in any space and use the pay box to pay for your parking. Payment receipts must be displayed on your car s dashboard to be valid. 3 NaturalistLed HIKES & TOURS A Heroine s History Join a Garden Naturalist on a walking history tour of the Wildfower Garden and learn about the rich history of the nation s oldest public wildfower garden and its founding mother and frst curator, Eloise Butler. Berries, Drupes, & Other Fruits Many visitors come to see the spring wildfowers, yet it is in late summer that the fowers of spring have fully transformed into glorious fruits. Stop by to explore fascinating fruit topics including: fruit formation, edibility of native plant fruits, and uses of fruits by animals and humans Birding Basics Beginning birders will learn a few techniques and tips for success with binoculars and feld guides and will discover what to look for when identifying birds in the feld. Bring binoculars or borrow ours. Birding Stroll Join a Garden Naturalist for a birding focused stroll through the Garden. Learn a few techniques and tips for success with binoculars to look for and identify birds in the Garden. Bring binoculars or borrow ours. Fabulous Ferns Ferns are a fascinating group of plants that are one of the oldest types of plants still growing on Earth today! Take a guided hike to Fern Glen and learn to better identify these fabulous ferns from one of our Garden Naturalists. Family Forest Walk Let a Naturalist join your family as you explore the Garden. Look for summer blossoms and the fruits of the season. Search for interesting wildlife, frogs, birds, and insects too. Forest Bathing in the Garden Come to the Garden and try forest bathing in the evenings in June and July. Soak up the sights, sounds, and smells of the Garden s natural setting to promote physiological and psychological health. Take the opportunity to slow down, appreciate things that can only be heard or seen when moving slowly and take a break from the stress of everyday life. Tis class will be ofered on every other Wednesday and Sunday evenings at 7pm in the Garden. Meet at the Visitor Shelter. Dragonfies & Butterfies Learn about the beautiful dragonfy, the majestic butterfy, and other incredible insects. Join a Naturalist on an insect-flled tour of the Garden! Early Birders New birders and those with a little more experience can join our Naturalists Saturday mornings for more practice identifying birds by sight, sound, and behavior. Bring binoculars and a feld guide or borrow ours. 3

4 Full Moon Garden Tour* *$5 per person Take a twilight tour of the Garden and discover the magic of being in our Sanctuary long after the sun has set. We will look for bats and listen for owls. Meet at the front gate. Registration in advance is strongly encouraged, as spaces are limited. Magic & Medicine in the Garden Discover the magic of the Summer Solstice as you explore the trails with a Garden Naturalist. Learn the folklore behind the traditional uses of some wild medicinal plants. See what s blooming during this energetic and warming time of year; just what the doctor ordered! Naturalist s Niche Guided Hike Join a passionate Wildfower Garden Naturalist on a guided hike to some of their favorite garden spaces and learn about one of their most beloved topics of choice. New Moon Creatures of the Night Tour* *$5 per person Experience the Garden at nightfall and use your senses to fnd bats, nighthawks, owls, and insects. Meet at the front gate. Registration in advance is strongly encouraged, as spaces are limited. Prairie Wildfower Tour Tour the prairie and discover beautiful fowers and grasses. Learn about the history of prairies in Minnesota, how the prairie garden was created, and the methods used to maintain this lovely landscape. Quaking Bog Tour Discover what makes a bog unique and what adaptations plants need to survive in this wetland. Learn what is being done to protect this special habitat. Meet at the Quaking Bog parking lot. Tremendous Trees Join a Garden Naturalist on a tree tour of the Garden. Learn what to look for when identifying trees, the key characteristics of species, tree stories, and where the heritage trees are located. Wildfower Walk Join a Naturalist on a wildfower focused tour of the Garden. You will have the chance to walk the Garden trails while learning about and looking for summer wildfowers. Wildfowers of the Wetland Garden Join a Garden Naturalist in the Wetland Garden to learn about the plants of this special garden space. See the Showy Lady Slipper in bloom and learn about the species of wildfowers in bloom along the boardwalk trail. Citizen Science Bumble Bee Surveys Free, family-friendly event Volunteer with Elaine Evans, an entomologist from the University of Minnesota s Bee Lab to gently catch, identify, and release bumble bees. Find out how many bumble bee species are in the Wildfower Garden and search for the seldom seen rusty-patch bumble bee! No experience necessary. Meet at the Visitor Shelter. Talk to Garden Naturalists to see what s blooming during this energetic and warming time of year. Join a Garden Naturalist on birding stroll at 6 pm or discover crafts and activities for all. Enjoy snacks and refreshments in the shelter. Summer Solstice Celebration June 21, 8-9:30 pm Rejoice in the Summer Solstice with a special evening program at the Garden! Revel in the earthy, evening air as you learn more about the cultural signifcance of this magical time of year. 4th of July Celebration Celebrate Independence Day at the Garden with the family during our Garden Story Time at 10:30 am, learn a little history of the Garden with a Walking History Tour at 1 pm, explore our Quaking Bog at 4 pm, or try Forest Bathing at 7 pm. Pollinator Party: A Celebration of Bees Tursday, July 26, 5-8 pm Note location: Lyndale Park Gardens, east side of Lake Harriet Free event for all ages Come celebrate the life and work of honeybees and wild bees. Learn from scientists and beekeepers, meet some bees, sample honey, engage in hands-on art, and more. 6 In the Garden CHILDREN S CLASSES Nature Tots Led by Garden Naturalists Cost: $5/per child, caregivers free Bring your favorite adult along to explore nature for activities, hikes, crafts and stories for children ages 2 to 5 years old and adults to share. Space is limited advance registration is encouraged. TURTLE TALES Tuesday, June 5, 10:30-11:30am What makes turtles so unique? We ll investigate these amphibious creatures with a hike through their habitat, a turtle craft, and we ll even get to meet a turtle! We will also read Turtle Splash! by Cathryn Falwell. THE LIFE OF THE LADY S SLIPPER Tuesday, June 12, 10:30-11:30am Have you ever wondered what makes the Lady s Slipper (Minnesota s state fower) so special? Learn why so many people get excited to see this unique fower, and then we ll read Te Legend of the Ladyslipper by Lise Lunge-Larson and Margi Preus. We will also make our own fowers. SUNNY SUMMER SOLSTICE Tuesday, June 19, 10:30-11:30am We ll do a sun-themed experiment, read about how cultures celebrate the solstice, and play sun-themed games! We ll use our imaginations to observe shadows while hiking in the garden. SIX-LEGGED FRIENDS Tuesday, June 26, 10:30-11:30am Do you like bugs? Tis is the program for you! We ll go to the prairie and look for all types of insects dragonfies, butterfies, beetles, leaf bugs, stick bugs, and more. We will learn why insects are so important for our fowers. You will make your own buzzing insect and listen to a story that is all about insects. TOAD-ALLY AWESOME Tuesday, July 3, 10:30-11:30am What makes toads diferent from frogs? In this class, we ll fnd out by learning about our amphibious friends and their life cycles, reading a story all about toads, and even going on a toad safari in the garden. FEATHERED FRIENDS Tuesday, July 10, 10:30-11:30am It s time to get to know our feathered friends! Bring your keen eyes and ears on a hike to look and listen for birds with our very own decorated binoculars! Learn more about birds with a story and then we ll take our binoculars on the trail for a bird hike. RAINBOW IN THE GARDEN Tuesday, July 17, 10:30-11:30am Can you fnd all the colors of the rainbow at the Wildfower Garden? Tis week, we ll try! Join us to see how many colorful plants and critters we can fnd! We ll go for a rainbow hike, read the book Green, and do an art project using all the colors of the rainbow. GARDEN STORYTIME Wednesdays & Saturdays, 10:30-11am Families can join a Garden Naturalist each Wednesday or Saturday morning in the spring for a diferent nature themed story each week in a diferent spot in the Garden. Meet at the shelter. 6

7 In the Garden CHILDREN S CLASSES Nature Tots, continued ANIMAL HOMES Tuesday, July 24, 10:30-11:30am From foxes and woodpeckers to turtles and dragonfies, we ll explore all the diferent places animals live! We ll read a story; use our senses to look around for animals at the Garden; and make our own animal habitats. SUPERB S-S-SNAKES Tuesday, July 31, 10:30-11:30am Whether you think snakes are super cool or you re not totally convinced you ll get to explore the lives of these reptiles. We ll go on a hike while reading I Don t Like Snakes by Nicola Davies, make a snake craft, and then (if you d like), you ll get to meet a snake! ART IN THE GARDEN Tuesday, August 7, 10:30-11:30am In this class, we ll spend time drawing, painting, and photographing the landscape and plants of the Wildfower Garden. We ll read a story about other artists who were inspired by their own landscapes and then spend more time creating art in the garden. BEAUTIFUL BERRIES Tuesday, August 14, 10:30-11:30am Have you ever wondered why plants grow berries? Or what those berries look like on the inside? We ll go for a hike to explore plants with berries, read a story about berries, and make a tasty berry-themed craft! MAJESTIC MONARCHS Tuesday, August 21, 10:30-11:30am Learn about our state butterfy the Monarch! Find out how these amazing insects start their lives as tiny eggs and transform from hungry caterpillars to winged migrators. Make a butterfy to take home, explore the Garden looking for monarchs and other butterfies fitting about, and listen to a story called Are You a Butterfy? by Judy Allen. PRAIRIE EXPLORERS Tuesday, August 28, 10:30-11:30am In this class, we ll explore the landscape of the prairie from hiding in tall grasses, to feeling the soft seeds of a milkweed plants, to trying to catch a glimpse of a butterfy or dragonfy. We ll read a prairie story, go for a scavenger hunt, and make our own prairie fowers. Garden Explorers Tursdays, 10:30-11:30 am For Elementary-age students accompanied by an adult Cost: $5/per child, caregivers free Garden Explorers take on new topics each week and explore them in-depth with a Garden Naturalist.
