4 About Us: Cedar Mountain Perennials was established in The nursery is located on 20 acres just outside of Athol, Idaho, between Coeur d Alene and Sandpoint. Cedar Mountain Perennials is a retail nursery specializing in native plants for the inland northwest garden. We are a family owned and operated. At Cedar Mountain Perennials we are committed to providing you with a wide selection of quality native plants. We promote the recognition, appreciation and use of native plants for ornamental landscapes. We are dedicated to preserving plants native to the inland Northwest. Our inventory consists of a wide selection of high quality container grown plants. Most of our plants are propagated and grown from seed here at the nursery in our greenhouse. Whenever possible we collect seed for our plants for local sources. The majority of plants grown here at CMP are plants native to the Pacific Northwest or adapted to the pacific northwest garden. Our selection includes a variety perennials, shrubs and trees that will fit into a variety of garden situations including perennial gardens, rock gardens, butterfly gardens, wildflower gardens and woodland gardens. Retail sales are offered through the Kootenai and Sandpoint Farmer s markers as well as by appointment at the nursery. We provide private consultations for landowners regarding plant selection for their garden based on their landscape design needs. We are available to conduct educational workshops on native plant identification, propagation and use. We are active members of the Kinnikinick Native Plant Society, Idaho Native Plant Society and Montana Native Plant Society. Bob has degrees in Botany, Horticulture and Entomology and is a certified Nursery Professional and Plant Diagnostician. Jill has degrees in Forestry and Entomology.

5 Why Use Native Plants? What is a native plant? Native plants are plants that are indigenous to a particular region. They have evolved over hundreds of thousands of years in that region and are highly adapted to geography, hydrology, soils and climate there. Native plants occur as part of complex communities of plants and animals. These communities have developed together and provide a rich environment for native species including song birds and butterflies. Why grow native plants? Natives are well adapted to our climate and soils. Once established they are very low maintenance. They require little supplemental water, or insecticide or herbicide use. They provide food and habitat for native wildlife. All in all using native plants adds beauty to the home landscape while preserving our natural heritage. How can native plants be used? Native plants can be grown in a native garden or may be added to the traditional garden. Native plant gardens need not be boring. There are a wide variety of native plants with very attractive blooms, foliage, fall color, shapes and sizes. You can create perennial gardens, shade gardens, rock gardens, butterfly gardens, hummingbird gardens, even cut flower gardens all with native plants. Through proper plant selection and design you can achieve a beautiful landscape that will last for many years. Where can I get native plants? While you might consider procuring plants in the wild, there are many advantages to purchasing them from your local nursery such as Cedar Mountain Perennials. Many species don t transplant well because of their deep root systems. It may be difficult to find the species you want for your landscape. By digging plants in the wild, you are destroying their environment as well as wild populations. Further it is often illegal to collect native plants from public lands. To learn more about native plants one of the best resources you may find is to join your local Native Plant Society chapter.

6 Using this Catalogue USDA Hardiness Zones Hardiness zones were developed to delineate geographic areas within which specific plants could grow based upon the area s average minimum temperature. For example a plant described as hardy to zone 6 means it can tolerate a minimum temperature of 10 degrees F. A plant described as hardy to zone 5 means it can tolerate a minimum temperature of 20 degrees F. Hardiness zones were first developed by the United States Department of Agriculture. Much of northern Idaho and Northeastern Washington falls within Zones 5 and 6. USDA Hardiness Zones of the Northwestern United States
