1 Yingying Zhang Memorial Garden Proposal Project Description The Champaign County Master Gardeners (CCMG), in conjunction with the Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) and other student groups, propose a Memorial Garden dedicated to missing Chinese scholar, Yingying Zhang. The proposed garden will be located immediately adjacent to Campbell Hall, which is near the last known location of Ms. Zhang. The Master Gardeners collaborated with CSSA and other interested students, The City of Urbana, Illinois Public Media (which occupies Campbell Hall) and U of I faculty to design a garden space with beauty and functionality. The palette of the garden is green and white with some shrubs displaying amazing autumn colors. All plants were chosen not only for beauty, but for local adaptability and ease of maintenance. Hardscaping utilizes durable materials requiring maintenance appropriate to student volunteers designated as caretakers. For establishment of the garden, CCMG s will procure materials and oversee installation in early fall of Student volunteers, organized by the CSSA, will complete daily or weekly maintenance of the garden going forward. In partnership with the CSSA, CCMG s will provide annual training for student volunteers to ensure a knowledgeable and capable volunteer base for the project. As needed, CCMG s will provide technical assistance to volunteers throughout the growing seasons for all future management of this garden. Although CSSA will be charged with organization of student volunteers for ongoing maintenance, the CCMG s are willing to assist with any volunteer organization or technical assistance that may be needed to support the Memorial Garden. Proposed Garden Location The proposed location for the Memorial Garden is adjacent to Campbell Hall on the UIUC Campus, near the corner of N. Goodwin Ave. and S. Clark St. The green box in the figure below represents the approximate 600 ft 2 footprint of the Memorial Garden.

2 Proposed Garden Design The proposed design includes a short gravel path leading to a bench oriented toward the bus stop at which Ms. Zhang was last seen. An engraved stone will be set near the bench with brief text describing the garden. Concrete pavers, fading into the gravel for a disappearing effect, will be installed where the path meets the sidewalk to limit gravel displacement onto the high-traffic sidewalk and minimize maintenance. Green and white were selected as the primary color theme for this garden to reflect the somber ambiance of a memorial garden. The specimen plant, a weeping cherry (Prunus x Snowfozam ), will provide a cascade of spring flowers and structure in all seasons with brilliant bark and an interesting branching pattern. The juniper on standard (Juniperus procumbens Nana ) is a grafted plant that will retain a unique growth habit reminiscent of a bonsai interpretation. The oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia Alice ) mimics the decorative and defining element of white walls in formal Chinese gardens while providing the winter interest of cinnamon-colored, exfoliating bark. All three hydrangea varieties included in this design provide summer flowering. Sweetspire shrubs (Itea virginica Little Henry ) line the sidewalk, forming a fragrant front hedge that will attract pollinators and butterflies throughout early and mid-summer while remaining 2-3 ft. tall at mature size. Two small lines of evergreen boxwoods (Buxus x Green Velvet ) define the space in four seasons and block wind and debris from the garden. All plants were selected for both beauty and hardness in our area. When possible, disease resistant varieties were chosen. Design consideration was given to the view from Campbell Hall as all plants selected will be an appropriate mature size to preserve window views and enhance the area. The drawing included on the flowing page indicates the arrangement of plants and hardscaping within the proposed garden design. Abbreviated labels on individual plants correspond the plant list included with the drawing. An appendix of plant pictures is included at the end of this proposal with representative photos of each plant in the proposed design.
