2 Denver Urban Gardens comes alongside residents, and together, we cultivate gardeners, grow food and nourish community. In 1985, Denver Urban Gardens (DUG) was incorporated and supported three community gardens. In 2017, DUG worked alongside community members to establish our 170 th community garden in Metro Denver. Currently, 65 of our community gardens are located on school grounds. 4 Community Engagement & Self-Efficacy When a group of dedicated community members comes to consensus that a community garden complements their vision for their neighborhood, the community must assess its own readiness to support and sustain a community garden. 5 Measuring Outcomes & Sustainability Community gardens are more likely to be sustained if they grow from the local community s desire, needs, and strengths. This approach helps to ensure there is enough demand and desire to care for and use the garden for years to come. This also allows the garden to reflect the individual community s needs and uniqueness. 6 2

Issue of equity is driving P&R in many cities Need to empower underresourced communities to get organized and speak up 8 9 3

5 Appealed to a diverse group of fundraising partners Center for Disease Control s Views: Here at the start of the 21 st century our understanding of which factors promote health and which damage health have grown considerably. The diseases of the 21 st century will be chronic diseases, those that steal vitality and productivity, and consume time and money. These diseases heart disease, diabetes, obesity, asthma, and depression are diseases that can be moderated by how we design and build our human environment. 13 Brought in our experts to help design the park 14 Final Design & Construction 15 5

8 Public support & Community ownership In some ways, I saw the garden as a metaphor for certain aspects of my life. A leader must also tend his garden; he, too, plants seeds, and then watches, cultivates, and harvests the results.
