1 JAMIE DURIE BACKYARD Lorena and Simon are newlyweds who love to entertain, but have a small and uninspiring backyard and no idea how to bring it to its potential. Having recently returned from their honeymoon in Fiji, they want to incorporate the tropical feel as a reminder of the chilled island vibe where they can relax and spend time with family and friends. Muddy patches caused by their dog on one side, dry patches of grass on the other, and weeds in between; moss and moisture in the corner with no sun; no plants or shrubs; an ugly fence, air conditioning unit and water tank take prominence - their backyard couldn t feel any more removed from their dream garden! Jamie Durie comes to the rescue to make the backyard feel like an escape where Lorena and Simon can entertain to their heart s delight.

2 ENTERTAINING AREA WITH DECK & PERGOLA Before the frame for the deck can be set, the old patchy lawn needs to be ripped up. Once the frame is in place, Kyal installs a new style of eco friendly decking that not only looks stylish, but is made up of over 90 reclaimed bamboo, timber and recycled plastic, making it low maintenance, durable and weather resistant. The new deck will be hit with a lot of westerly sun, so a pergola is installed to help keep the new entertaining area nice and cool on those hot summer days. The roof of the pergola is sloped back to existing house to allow for drainage but will also let in a lot of natural light. Sheets of bamboo are used to cover the roof, in keeping with the tropical look. The pergola is then finished off with a coat of grey paint, and a new Dining set completes the picture.

4 AIR CONDITIONING UNIT SHELF The air conditioning unit is a huge eyesore, so Jamie sets Kyal the challenge of making the unit disappear and work it into something functional where plants can also be added. Kyal gets cracking. He s measured and, using a Mitre Saw, cut some off the shelf primed timber, which he will attach to a three-sided frame to encase the air conditioning unit. Kyal has louvered the front to ensure the unit has good ventilation. Once the three sides are screwed together, he can put it into place. With a lick of paint to match the pergola and some shelves for plants, one of Lorena and Simon s backyard eyesores is transformed into a functional feature of the garden.

6 WATER TANK & CLOTHES LINE AREA The water tank is a huge eyesore but can t be moved, so Jamie comes up with a great way to conceal this area by using a very simple-to-install screen. Jamie simply secures the Screen Up posts into place, then slots timber slats and spacers into the posts and finishes each end off with a cap. The great thing about this system is you can adjust the width of your screen to suit your space, then simply cut your timber slats to match. By then adding a pathway to the clothesline, more plants, and Golden Cane Palms to mask the water tank, Jamie has completely transformed this once dreary corner.

8 BACK FENCE The existing fences are painted to match the pergola. The grey colour is chosen to tie in nicely with the greenery as it gives the plants depth and really makes them pop. A new frame is then built along the back fence, to which the Oxy-Shield decorative screens from Whites are then attached. Before the screens can be attached, however, Jamie puts electrician/owner Simon s skills to use and has him install waterproof halogen lights that, when turned on at night, will shine through the beautiful laser cut bamboo designs of the screens to create a warm tropical glow. The screens are made from specially formulated steel designed to have rustic tones but without the inherent degradation of regular steel. They also oxidise and form a surface coating that is resistant to corrosion and flaking, as well as developing a rich, early patina that will blend beautifully with Lorena and Simon s new garden.

10 SIDE PASSAGE Jamie transforms the side area into not only a practical pathway from the side entry of the house to the backyard, but also creates a space for Lorena and Simon to sit and relax with a gorgeous timber lounge setting. To add greenery to the side passage, Jamie plants no-mow Mondo Grass, which is sure to be a favourite for Lorena and Simon because, as the name suggests, it never needs to be mown!

12 PLANTS After taking care of some overgrown hedges in the front of the house with a hedge trimmer, Jamie is now ready to tackle the plants in the backyard. The new bamboo screen roof on the pergola creates much needed shade for the tropical microclimate, and plants such as the Boston Fern, in their hanging baskets, and wall mounted Stag Horn will thrive. Then using a variety of other easy-care plants such as Golden Cane Palm, Orange Jasmine, Bird of Paradise and Mondo Grass, Jamie turns a dull, drab back yard into an at-home tropical paradise!
