1 JAMIE DURIE HERITAGE GARDEN After living in London for many years and travelling around the world, Mark and Kim moved back to Kim s hometown of Perth. But Mark ended up flying back and forth to Sydney to look after his elderly parents so often that they decided it would be easier if they just lived closer. So in 2015 they moved into a newly-built house, situated on the last sub division of the family s traditional block of land. As it was a rural area, the back yard area has never had any kind of garden and is a true blank canvas for Jamie to work with. Jamie s plan is to create a garden that will draw people in to it, with a series of paving steps leading to a covered pergola and dining area. To bring a touch of nostalgia for Mark and Kim, Jamie plants flowers that are native to some of the places they ve travelled to.

2 THE CHALLENGE Before Working from Mark and Kim s wish list, Jamie includes a pergola for Mark and Kim to entertain friends and family, while the raised garden beds will have a sustainability aspect, with plenty of fruit, vegetables and herbs planted throughout. A series of paved steps invites people from the back door to the pergola and the yard is levelled with new Sir Walter buffalo turf rolled out. After

3 PLANTS Around the perimeter of the garden are raised garden beds made from the Ridgi retaining wall system with decking on top that can be used as a seat. While this system looks just like real timber, the sleepers are actually concrete, so are termite and rot resistant. The garden beds feature an abundance of fruit and vegetables including olive trees, corn, strawberries, lime, chilli, bananas, blueberries and rhubarb and also herbs like sage, thyme, parsley and basil. And to help all those fruit and veg grow, Jamie employs a technique called companion planting; placing different types of plants next to each to not only attract bees and other beneficial insects, but repel unwanted pests and promote biodiversity.

4 PERGOLA The pergola was constructed from treated pine for the uprights, base and roof frames and Ekodeck in dark brown for the deck itself. Ekodeck is made from over 90% recycled timber mixed with bamboo and recycled plastic, which means it s far less likely to split or warp and will never require oiling or painting. It is also resistant to termites, rot, decay, mould and mildew. On top of the pergola, Coolaroo shade cloth provides 70% UV protection from the sun and won t tear or fray. Jamie also planted sultana grape vines, paw paw, passion fruit and kiwi fruit at the base of the uprights, so in time they will grow over the pergola, providing fruit for Mark and Kim and also complimenting the shade cloth in helping block out the sun. Mark and Kim will be able to wow their friends and family with beautiful barbecue dinners with their new Matador 6 burner barbecue and stylish Mimosa outdoor dining table chairs.

5 PATHWAY STEPS Good garden design is all about form and function. These steps invite you from the back patio to the pergola. Spaced 700mm apart, they re just the right length for most people to easily step from one to the next. As nature is rarely perfectly symmetrical, Jamie has designed them all to be different lengths, blending architecture with nature. And a good tip for planting out a garden bed is to position the pots in place first, so you can get the correct look and space between each before planting.
