1 JAMIE DURIE COURTYARD Maria has a courtyard that she doesn t want to spend any time in, as it is just so uninviting. The pavers are ugly and stained from her dog, weeds are growing all over the place, and plants keep dying. Maria even closes her blinds to block out the ugly view of her courtyard. Now that her dog has passed away, her home feels empty. She would like to bring new life to her little courtyard and make it a relaxing space she can enjoy all year round.

2 PAVERS With the old pavers stripped out and discarded, Jamie gets cracking with the laying of the new. He, in fact, uses concrete sleepers as their length helps to give the illusion of space in this small area, as well as being rot and warp resistant and built to last. With the addition of some pops of green between the pavers, this courtyard renovation is starting to take shape. To clean off any final mess before the big reveal, Jamie uses a battery operated, cordless pressure washer: the perfect tool for keeping this gorgeous haven looking its best.

4 PERGOLA To bring more light into the courtyard, Kyal simply removes a section of slats in the existing pergola, adds a new frame and finally some clear sheeting on top. He then suspends a beautiful hanging plant above a striking new feature urn to really help draw the eye out of doors. To ensure his plant is hanging straight, he uses a turnbuckle to easily balance all four sides. Jamie paints the underside of the pergola in an enticing sky blue to create the feeling of being in the open air even though it s under cover.

6 DINING SEATING AREA To really make the most of the limited space available, Kyal makes two bench seats that cleverly double as storage boxes. He begins by measuring and cutting his timber down to size for each bench seat. Kyal uses a simple trick in which he places the widths of his timber boards side by side to decide how high his seats will be. By doing so, he avoids unnecessary cuts and wastage. He then simply fixes the timber, four boards high, together with screws to form a long box. To top off the boxes, Kyal uses timber decking to form the seating. With a gloss stain finish and some comfy custom-made cushions, this corner of the courtyard has turned from dull to delightful!

8 GALLERY AREA Jamie has created an outdoor gallery wall for all of Maria s treasures, including items she s picked up on her travels, artwork made by friends and her own beautiful photography. A comfy lounge has also been set up and makes for a most inviting area within the courtyard. Another of Maria s treasures is her mum s 40-year-old orchid. But before it can grace the gallery, it needs a little attention and care. Jamie notices the leaves have black spots on them, indicating poor drainage, and the roots are compacted in the pot. Orchids like to sit in well draining materials, and Jamie uses a specially formulated potting mix with the nutrients needed to bring this beauty back to its former glory.

10 VERTICAL GARDEN A simple, yet effective way to bring greenery into a tight spot is to use a vertical planting kit. Jamie is able to connect several kits together to make a large green wall to cover a whole fence! The kits have removable pots for easy planting and care, and a clever irrigation system, which delivers controlled amounts of water to each plant while at the same time ensuring minimal water wastage. Jamie plants beautifully scented Chinese Star Jasmine at the top as they like full sunlight, and will also look beautiful as a trailing border along the fence. At the bottom in the shadier section of the green wall, Jamie plants Philodendron xanadu, a plant with an attractive leaf that will help create a lush fullness to the wall. To finish off, Jamie plants the remaining pots with grasses, succulents and ferns.
