1 FAMILY ROOM DESIGN CHALLENGE Michael, Betty and their three kids all love to hang out in the family room, but the kids are quickly growing out of their play area and the parents can t relax as they are constantly tripping over the kids multitude of toys and tidying up after them. They created a fenced off area for the kids and their toys, but their eldest has broken it, allowing their toys to spill out into the room. When the kids were younger the play area was fully gated but now they are older they don t want to be closed in they feel like they are being jailed off or that they are in the naughty corner. The kids also like to express their creativity by drawing all over the floor and walls, much to Michael and Betty s dismay! This couple really are at a loss as to how to keep the large family room tidy and make it more functional and fun, not just for the kids, but for mum and dad too, especially as they like to entertain their extended family.

2 THE CHALLENGE Barry provides our two teams Kyal & Kara and James Treble with some requirements for this challenge: Organise the room with some clever storage Create seating for a big extended family Include a DIY feature To prepare for the challenge, the teams have agreed to have the room painted. They have chosen a beautiful soft grey paint that is paired with a white trim to really give the room some personality. The ers are now ready to go!

3 KYAL & KARA S BUILD To encourage the children s creativity (and help keep their artworks off the walls!) Kyal and Kara build them their very own dedicated drawing area. To begin with, Kyal cuts a piece of plywood to his desired shape. He has chosen a traditional roofline. To do this, he measures and marks the centre of the wood along the top edge, and at equal distances down the sides. He draws a line between the top mark and the side marks, cuts along the lines with a circular saw and smooths the edges with a trim router. On another piece of wood, Kara applies chalkboard paint for the kids to draw on to their hearts content. As their build is made out of plywood, this paint can be applied directly with no priming needed. Tape is used to achieve a clean line, which Kyal can then use to guide his final cuts. A little doll s house shelf is attached with screws to complete their build. To securely attach the build to the plaster walls, Kyal will pre-drill holes and then screw in wallmates to provide secure fixing points.

4 KYAL & KARA S DESIGN After a shop at IKEA, Kyal gets straight to work by installing some clever storage frames, each containing several grooves that allows him to mix and match removable boxes of different sizes. He then screws accessible book displays for the children onto the walls while Kara installs new curtains. Kara begins by putting up the curtain tracks, which are super easy to assemble with components that simply click into place. She then hangs lovely soft, ceiling to floor sheer curtains that give the room height and provide privacy while still letting daylight in. Kyal and Kara mix and match rugs to add texture and create a point of interest in their room. The modular couch with inbuilt storage that they have selected is then placed on top. This is the perfect setup for visits from Michael and Betty s large extended family, and has some added benefits removable, washable covers and pull out beds! Kara finishes the look with an easy to assemble coffee table in a beautiful, natural timber that fits perfectly with their Scandinavian look.

6 JAMES BUILD To combat the lack of storage and organisation for the kids in this family room, James comes up with a funky, yet practical idea using a pegboard. First, James livens up the pegboard by stencilling on some clouds and a bright yellow sun! To do this, James draws his onto contact paper and cuts out the shapes. He then sticks the directly onto the pegboard, which will give a crisp edge when painted. He sprays his paint on in several light coats with even strokes going from side to side. This way he gets perfect coverage and avoids the paint pooling or streaking. Once the paint is dry, James is then able to peel his stencils back to reveal his funky!

7 JAMES DESIGN Rugs are a really easy and effective way to zone your living spaces. James has selected a rug with a strong pattern for the adults area, and pairs it with two 3-seater couches in a neutral tone. Next he combines four smaller tables together to create a versatile coffee table that can be moved around as the need arises. As lack of storage is a major issue in this family room, James builds several shelving units that can then be coupled with storage baskets and colourful cupboard doors. Firstly, he lays all the pieces out so everything can be seen clearly. Then by simply following the step-bystep instructions, James solves this room s biggest problem! To speed up the process, he uses a drill with an allen key attachment. With his pegboard build secured to the wall, a colourful rug placed in the kids zone and some complimenting cushions for the couches, is complete.
