1 LOUNGE / DINING DESIGN CHALLENGE After 10 years of renting, Juni bought her first unit, which has features a front door that opens directly into her living room. This door has limited the space in her living room and she has no idea on how to arrange her furniture to make it work properly. Also, the furniture she has bought just doesn t work it is either too big, too dark, or has colours that don t work. Her confusion has meant that the room has not been fully furnished and feels empty. The lack of proper entry way also means Juni has nowhere for her guests to put their shoes when they come for a visit. On top of all this, the TV connection is right next to the door to the balcony so she s left with a TV blocking the door and has to keep the curtains closed. Her apartment could not be more removed from the cozy, comfortable and light feel she is after.

2 THE CHALLENGE With Barry away Amanda steps up to provide our two design teams Kyal and Kara and James Treble - with some requirements for this challenge: Each team needs to come up with a custom build to battle the lack of entryway, and create an area perfect place for Juni to greet her guests Both teams also need to bring light and colour back into the apartment using meaningful pieces from Juni s background and life, namely photography by her brother The dull wall colour needs to be addressed and changed To prepare for the challenge, the teams have agreed to have the apartment painted in a bright and fresh, yet warm tone, and have the TV antenna moved to a better location in order to give Juni back the door to her balcony, and, at the same time, allowing lots of lovely natural light to filter back in. The designers are now ready to go!

3 KYAL & KARA S BUILD Kyal and Kara have decided to build a storage unit for the entryway so that Juni and her guests have somewhere to put their shoes and coats. For their stunning yet simple build, they have chosen to use pine boards as shelves and oak dowels for vertical legs. Once the boards are marked and measured, Kyal cuts the boards and dowels to size using a mitre saw. Once cut, he uses an edge trimmer to round off the edges of the shelves. Kara, in the mean time, spray paints hooks a lovely midnight blue colour, which will tie in with the other styling accents they use in their design. These will be added at the top of the unit to hang coats from. They are now ready to assemble their storage unit. The pine boards are screwed together to make the shelves. Finally, holes are drilled in the top and bottom shelves, and the dowels inserted and secured into place. Once secured to the apartment wall, it becomes an elegant solution to one of Juni s main problems.

4 KYAL & KARA S DESIGN Kyal and Kara begin by replacing the dining table with one that helps to warm up the space. They ve chosen a table with a rustic timber look, and the blue legs tie in perfectly with their build. Then, to help create a designated area for relaxing and watching TV, they have placed the new couch on a large textured rug. Now it s time to get styling! Kara has chosen an oversized artwork, which, when hung in a small space, creates a real statement. To hang this beautiful work, Kyal measures from the top of the frame to the string, then transfers these measurements to the wall so he can position it at the perfect height. A great tip for filing an empty nook in your home is to work in groups of three. In one such area, Kara hangs one of Juni s brother s photographs, a lamp is added to give height and ambience, and a plant for greenery and volume. With Kara s build installed, and some final styling items added for pops of colour and texture, their look is complete.

6 JAMES BUILD To create definition between the entry and living area, James has decided to make a decorative slatted screen to separate the two zones. To make the screen, James has selected Dressed All Round (DAR) pre-sanded Tasmanian oak. The beautiful grain of this timber will help give his build a refined look. First, James measures and cuts his nine lengths of timber that will be used to create the vertical slats. Then he marks his base plate and top plate using an off cut from his vertical slats to get the perfect spacing. With his marking complete, he can then pre-drill holes in the base and top plate to ensure the slats will be secure and won t split when attached. To ensure the slats are straight, James uses a right angle ruler to put the slats into position before securing them in place. Finally, with a coat of walnut stain, James decorative screen will be sure to make a statement.

7 JAMES DESIGN James begins by selecting an L shaped modular sofa that allows for maximum amount of seating in the small space and, at the same time, helps to create zones in the room. The newly zoned room has also allowed James to give Juni her very own study nook so she can keep her new dining table as an area for eating and entertaining. James striking timber screen is installed, and really helps to create a sense of privacy between the front door and the main living area. The vertical posts have the added illusion of creating height in the room, making the ceiling feel very tall. Finally, a shelving unit is added into an otherwise empty corner where Juni can display all her treasures, and where her guests can put their shoes in beautiful cane baskets.
