Southern NSW, ACT and Victoria TOUR OF OZBREED S PLANTS Landscape projects using Ozbreed s plants: Right plant, right place. Successful landscape projects Ozbreed s trial gardens Plant Breeding Institute testing Ph: Fax: For technical specification information contact: Nathan Dutschke sales@ozbreed.com.au
Southern NSW Albury Little Rev Dianella revoluta DR5000 PBR Little Rev (above) and Tanika (left) grow and perform well around Albury/Wodonga. They are a favourite with a lot of the landscapers and councils due to their hardiness and aesthetic appeal. They help improve the look of roadsides, carparks and roundabouts. Batemans Bay Tanika (left) This mass planting of Lomandra Tanika at Batemans Bay is thriving and looking great. It is a great feature in this landscape, providing a hardy, low maintenance plant that can cope with coastal winds and dry conditions.
Australian Capital Territory Canberra Airport Tanika (left) is being used extensively throughout Canberra and is a proven performer in Canberras climate. In this location, Tanika is used en masse so that when it is established, it will create a thick ground cover, eliminating weed growth. The ideal landscape plant. Deakin Little Rev (left) This planting has been in for a few years now and is still performing and looking great. Little Rev will generally grow to approximately 40-50cm tall with a dense growth habit and architectural foliage. Little Rev can spread to the edge of this path, creating a dense ground cover. Little Rev Dianella revoluta DR5000 PBR
Federal Highway Breeze Dianella caerulea DCNC0 PBR Breeze (left) staying evergreen with clean foliage compared to some native Poa grass behind it. Breeze keeps good colour throughout the year and can live on natural rainfall once established. It has a spreading ability from underground rhizomes which helps it through dry times. Breeze responds well to being cut back if required. Brindabella Business Park Tanika (left) is ideal for around office buildings in raised gardens. It copes well with the cold and frost and is very drought tolerant. A stylish ornamental strappy leaf plant. Tanika can be pruned to shape or cut back if required. King Alfred Dianella caerulea JOHN316 PBR King Alfred (left) is a fast establising Dianella caerulea, great for small or large landscapes. It has very good erosion control capabilities for slopes and embankments. It does benefit from being cut back to the ground every 2 years or so for a cleaner look.
Victoria South Morang Vintage Red Eucalyptus cladocalyx EUC78 PBR Vintage Red (left) has been in this planting on Lakes Boulevard for 2 years. It is a unique feature and a beautiful contrast with its dark foliage. It is smaller growing than we originally thought. It will grow 8-12 metres tall. Tanika (bottom left) and Nyalla (bottom right) are used commonly for their drought tolerance and ability to cope without any extra irrigation. Nyalla Lomandra longifolia LM400 PBR Coburg Nara Zoysia macrantha MAC03 PBR Nara Native Turf (left) installed in a residential backyard at Coburg. The owner loves the fact that it is a native turf and is very low maintenance. In Melbourne it is recommended for low wear areas in full sun to light shade. This is the only native turf available for residential and commercial use. Nara is best installed in the warmer months because it establishes faster. If you do install Nara in winter, remember to keep it moist until the temperature warms up and the roots start to strike.
Sandhurst Club Cassa Blue Dianella caerulea DBB03 PBR Tanika (above) planted in a median strip. This has been here for over 5 years and is irrigated regularly. Extra irrigation will not adversly affect Tanika provided they are not planted in depressed areas where they will get prolonged wet feet. Tanika is thriving here and will get taller in areas where irrigation is used more frequently. Cassa Blue (left) is a tough blue foliage Dianella. It has an upright clumping habit and is good in coastal and inland conditions. Chelsea Heights Little Jess Dianella caerulea DCMP01 PBR Little Jess (left) has been here for 2-3 years and is still performing well as a spreading Dianella with tidy, compact foliage. It has been used in many front gardens in this relatively new retirement village. Little Jess can be pruned back if required and will reshoot well.
Lyndhurst Sweet Mist Phormium tenax PH0S2 PBR Sweet Mist (left) at Marriot Waters performing beautifully as an eye catching colour contrast in the landscape. Sweet Mist is one of the most compact Phormiums available. Tanika (below left) is always a favourite in new housing developments and estates. Little Jess Dianella caerulea DCMP01 PBR Little Jess (above right) is great for roundabouts and mass plantings that need a spreading plant. Cassa Blue (left) showcasing its beautiful blue toned foliage. It is a great plant for Melbourne and performs year after year. It flowers in mid spring, presenting beautiful pale blue flowers. Cassa Blue Dianella caerulea DBB03 PBR
Lyndhurst Breeze Dianella caerulea DCNC0 PBR Breeze (left) is a Dianella caerulea with no canes and a larger growing height than Little Jess. Breeze copes well in the dry and the cold and is a great large border plant. It is excellent for mass plantings that need to cover a large area and it establishes quickly. Healesville This planting in Healesville has used Little Jess to create a mass ground cover effect under some establishing trees. Little Jess will spread up to the brick edging and will stop weeds from growing in the garden bed. Little Jess Dianella caerulea DCMP01 PBR
Ozbreed s Trial Gardens Katie Belles Lomandra hystrix 'LHBYF' PBR Isabella Liriope muscari 'LIRF' PBR Ozbreed s Trial Gardens - Western Sydney, NSW All of our plants are tested here before they go out to the public. If a plant won t work in our gardens, they won t go out to the public. If they do work, they go out for further regional testing. Katie Belles (left) is a great feature Lomandra in this landscape with its masses of perfumed yellow flowers. Isabella - lawn alternative Isabella Liriope muscari 'LIRF' PBR Katrinus Deluxe PBR Lomandra longifolia Isabella (top & middle) planted as a low ground cover. It s a good lawn alternative that can be mown to the ground once a year (middle left). Isabella has an abundance of small showy pink flowers. Katrinus Deluxe (left) in a mass planting. It is acting as soil erosion control along this slope. Katrinus Deluxe strengthens the soil 366%, while common Lomandra only strengthens the soil 50%. (2007 Paananen, Layt: Study).
Ozbreed s Trial Gardens Purple Fusion Scaevola humilis 'PFS100' PBR Purple Fusion (left) is a new Scaevola that grows flatter and is a true ground cover. It is longer lived and flowers most of the year. Purple Fusion has very good frost tolerance and can withstand dry periods well. A true landscape selection of Scaevola that doesn t tend to mound in habit or die out. Shara (right) is a new release from Ozbreed. It will just about grow anywhere. It copes brilliantly with heavy frost along with humidity and dry conditions. It will grow to approximately 50cm x 50cm and has a mass display of flowers in Spring. A compact form for mass planting where a tough, low growing and tidy plant is required. Shara Lomandra fluviatilis 'ABU7' PBR Naringa Westringia WES01 PBR Naringa (left) pruned into a ball shape. It needs less pruning to keep it in this shape compared to other Westringias. It can be left in its natural upright form for a different look, while still keeping clean. Naringa has showy mauve flowers in spring and spot flowering at other times of the year.
Ozbreed s Trial Gardens Ozbreed Aussie Box Westringia WES02 PBR Intended Grey Box Westringia WES04 PBR Intended Meema Hardenbergia violacea 'HB1' PBR Mundi Westringia fruticosa WES05 PBR Aussie Box (top left) is a new Westringia that can be a great native alternative to exotic box plants with much less pruning. This is a recent planting, but it reaches approx. 60 cm x 60 cm. It can be pruned to shape or left in its natural ball shape. Grey Box (top right) is a native Westringia very similar to Aussie Box, but with a grey foliage twist. It works well in contrast with Aussie Box, and grows slightly smaller at cm x cm. A great compact native. Meema (middle) was planted three years ago. It hasn t been pruned and is still holding its shape well. It s foliage has stayed clean since planting and its flowers keep coming back beautifully. Mundi (bottom) shaped into a low ground cover. It is also three years old and has looked beautiful when left in its natural form or pruned to shape.
Plant Breeding Institute Testing - Cobbity, NSW NEW CALLISTEMON VARIETIES TESTING Ozbreed, in association with Nuflora International have been working on breeding new Callistemon varieties with improved form and looks. Here are two to look out for in the near future. Macarthur Callistemon viminalis spp. 'LC01' PBR Intended Macarthur (left & above) has used parentage of Captain Cook and Little John in its breeding to develop some improved characteristics. Macarthur develops a more compact growth habit compared to Captain Cook and has a better flower display than Little John. It has a very bushy growth habit and will grow to approx. 1.8m high x 1.5m wide. Macarthur Slim Callistemon viminalis spp. 'CV01' PBR Intended Slim Slim Slim (left & above) will provide a beautiful flowering Bottlebrush that can be used in tight planting areas such as thin garden beds, along fencelines and walls. Slim will grow approx. 3m tall x 1m wide. It requires very minimal pruning to stay narrow. It can be kept shorter and narrower with pruning as it matures.
