F :-~~ -i~ S 5 3 ~ :.. 3 ~ 4. u,.~ ~ S - Callistemon Little John (Dwarf Callistemon) An evergreen small shrub that - forms a 3 feet high and 3 feet wide rounded mound with narrow 3 inch long bluish gray-green leaves and flowers of blood red bristle stamens that appear throughout the year, but peak bloom time is early summer through fall. Plant is drought tolerant in coastal gardens but tolerates and performs best with some irrigation. Hardy to about degrees F. 3

The tightly crowded linear leaves have a cream colored variegation along the margins. The flowering period for the species Westringia fruticosa can be year round in coastal gardens. The Showiest aspect of this plant is the clean variegated foliage. The small white flowers are the same as those of Westringia fruticosa. Plant in full sun or in bright filtered light. Will tolerate moderately dry growing conditions but looks best with some late spring and summer irrigation and can also be used in well drained moist soils. Hardy to about 200 4

5 Plant Palette I 1~ ~ ~ON RO ~ Ceanothus griseus Diamond Heights (Variegated Carmel Creeper) This is a - beautiful spreading shrub that grows to 1 foot tall by 6 feet wide with 1 inch long rounded leaves that are a yellow lime-green color with splashes of dark green. The yellow tones are brightest in warmer weather and full sun while the green is more dominant in winter or in heavily shaded plantings. Although most notable for its leaf coloration, as a bonus this plant has clusters of pale blue flowers in spring that display well against the vividly colored foliage. Plant in full sun to light shade in well drained soil and water occasionally to very little. Hardy to about 200 F. 5

6 Plant Palette Yucca filamentosa Bright Edge (The Adam s Needle) is a clump forming - perennial with tufts of dark green leaves edged in golden yellow. In the summer time, the foliage is even more golden. The creamy, bell-shaped, white flowers hover over the foliage. The red coloration on the long blades highlight the flowering crown. Bright Edge has a plant height of 18 and a spread of 20. It should be planted in full sun and in a well-drained area. Bright Edge looks great in a subject garden or in containers and is also a butterfly attractor. // 6

I., _,-v ~ I, ii ~ ii ~ ~.,, Senecio mandraliscae (Kleinia) Spreading succulent from South Africa that - grows to 12 to 18 inches tall with narrow 4 to 6 inch long blue gray fleshy leaves that can have branched leaf tips. It produces small rayless dull white flowers in mid-summer and forms a dense mat with leaves angled upward from the ground. Drought tolerant but tolerates regular irrigation. Plant in full sun to light shade. Hardy to F. A great groundcover.

It can grow to about 60 feet tall and 30 feet wide un-pruned but most noticeable are the studded large thorns on the greenish trunk and branches, which can be dangerous to careless passers-by but are also quite attractive. In summer into fall appear the large showy pale pink to rose colored flowers with five frilly petals are followed by large capsules that split open to release fingers of white flossy hairs. These hairs or floss are used to stuff pillows in this tree s native habitat, which ranges from southern Brazil into northeast Argentina and Paraguay, and is why this tree is often called Floss Silk Tree. Plant in full sun with well draining soil and irrigate occasionally to very little. It has proven hardy to below 20 F 8

When densely sown, a pure stand forms a moderate to coarse-textured lawn that is uniform in appearance with good weed and disease resistance. Tall fescue tolerates warm summer temperatures and stays green during cool, but not severe winter conditions. New varieties that are finer in texture and shorter in stature are known as turf-type tall fescues and dwarf turf-type tall fescues. Tall fescue is a good species to plant for general lawn use and is the most common lawn grass in California. 9
