This northern part of England has inspired writers, artists and gardeners for over 200 years and will inspire you as well. 3 DAY 1 Friday, June 7, 2019 Depart from the U.S. for your international overnight flight to Manchester, U.K. (MAN). DAY 2 Saturday, June 8, 2019 Welcome to the U.K.! We will be met at the airport and begin our touring day directly upon our arrival. If you are not traveling on the suggested flight from Philadelphia, please arrive at Manchester Airport by 9:00 am on Saturday, June 8. From the airport we will make our way into Yorkshire s capital city of York. York is a fabulous walled city that has much to offer its visitors! After an orientation tour with your guide, guests are free to explore at their leisure. There s the splendid Minster, the castle, the medieval shopping Shambles, Jorkvik Viking Centre, the Roman walls, and the gardens of the Treasurer s House. 4 DAY 3 Sunday, June 9, 2019 Our first stop is Fountains Abbey, where the Skell River Valley has been transformed into a spectacular Georgian water garden featuring canals, elegant ponds and water cascades. In this expansive landscape, there are medieval Abbey ruins, classical temples and statuary. We will also visit Newby Hall used recently for a film version of Mansfield Park. This 25-acre garden has been totally restored and replanted over a ten-year period by Mr. and Mrs. Robin Compton. The gardens were influenced by Lawrence Johnston s Hidcote Manor. Major Compton decided to create a main axis for the garden running from the south front of the house right down to the River Ure. The axis consisted of double herbaceous borders flanked by double yew hedges with a broad grass walk running down the middle. Evening is at leisure for you to explore York s many restaurants (B) DAY 4 Monday, June 10, 2019 Today, we head westward across the North Yorkshire Moors and visit what might just be the most spectacular stately home in Yorkshire, Castle Howard. This beautiful palace, used in the Brideshead Revisited film, is still lived in by the Howard family who built it in the 18th century. You ll have free time here to explore the house and grounds. The gardens feature temples, lakes, statuary, fountains and acres of parklands. In the Walled Garden, enjoy the 18th century collection of roses and delphiniums. We ll also visit the Walled Garden of Scampston, a contemporary gem created by Piet Oudolf in the setting of an 18th century kitchen garden space. The traditional garden surrounds the family home at Scampston and the estate parklands were originally designed by Capability Brown. The Walled Garden, a 4-acre garden is divided into 9 unique areas and has been called a 21st Century plantsman s paradise. Evening is at leisure. (B) PAGE FIVE PAGE SIX

5 DAY 5 Tuesday, June 11, 2019 Our busy day begins with a visit to a Royal Horticultural Society garden, Harlow Carr. Wander streamside through the scented garden, the kitchen garden and admire the variety of planting styles. There s also the British Gardens through the Ages exhibit to discover. Next we will enjoy Parcevall Hall Gardens, comprised of 24 acres of formal and woodland gardens rising up the hillside for 200 feet giving wonderful views in every direction. The gardens were laid out by the late Sir William Milner from 1927 onwards, and are planted with specimens from around the world, many collected from Western China and the Himalayas. The winner of the BBC Gardeners World Best Garden of 2010 award, Harewood House is also on our day s agenda. Another massive extravaganza of beauty, the 100 acres boasts plants from around the globe set inside a landscape designed by Capability Brown. MOBILITY NOTE: Harewood House contains some quite steep pathways which can be rather slippery when wet. There is an estate bus available for those that wish but it can only access part of the garden areas. Evening is at leisure. (B) PAGE SEVEN PAGE EIGHT

6 DAY 6 Wednesday, June 12, 2019 Today is a full day as we make our way to the Lake District via the charming landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales. This is the area that inspired Alf Wight, better known as James Herriot, to pen the All Creatures Great and Small books. We may call into the old market town of Thirsk to experience the famous view from Sutton Bank, which has been described as England s finest view. In nearby Thirsk, we ll enjoy a private visit to Mount St John, designed by Chelsea award-winning garden designer Tom Stuart-Smith. Following our visit to Mount St John, we ll take time to enjoy a group lunch together at The Carpenters Arms Pub, where our meal will feature produce grown in the garden. (B, L, D) Hotel: Lindeth How (3 nights) or similar DAY 7 Thursday, June 13, 2019 Today and tomorrow we have ample time for discovering the vistas of the Lake District that inspired many writers and artists. We will explore a garden or two in search of Beatrix Potter s Peter Rabbit, and visit her home at Hill Top. Our day also includes a visit to Leven Hall, a lovely 12 acre garden originally laid out in the 1690s. The landscaped gardens include a unique collection of ancient and extraordinary topiary characters sculpted from box and yew, a romantic old orchard and magnificent herbaceous borders. 7 DAY 8 Friday, June 14, 2019 Holker Hall & Gardens is the home of Hon. Lucy Cavendish and her husband Tor McLaren. Magnificently situated only a short distance from the expanse of Morecambe Bay, the estate is set in beautiful countryside with gardens that merge into parkland framed by the Lakeland Hills. Highlights of this 25-acre estate include the National Collection of Styracaceae, and the 400 year old Holker Great Lime with a girth of 25.9 feet! The climate here is unusual due to the Gulf Stream, creating favorable conditions for an ever-increasing collection of tender and unusual shrubs and ferns. Of course, our time in the Lakes District is sure to include a scenic lake cruise. Tonight, we will dine together. (B, D) PAGE ELEVEN PAGE TWELVE

8 DAY 9 Saturday, June 15, 2019 TERMS & CONDITIONS Departing the Lakes, we will travel south to see a bit more of the charming Cheshire countryside. Enroute we will visit Gresgarth Hall, a classic 12- acre gem featuring a unique pebble mosaic and kitchen garden among other highlights. The sound of water is ever-present. The terraces descend from the house to the lake, and are planted with roses, clematis and more tender plants in season. Arley Hall & Gardens, home to the Ashbrook family since the 15th century, is a place of enormous character, charm and interest. The Gardens, are outstanding for their variety and historical interest and celebrated for the magnificent double herbaceous border. The stunning 18th century Norton Priory Walled Garden offers orchards, a fruit garden and a beautiful rose walk, surrounded by woodland and a wildflower meadow. Norton is home to the National Collection of Quince trees, featuring 24 different varieties onsite. The quince is an ancient fruit and is believed to have originated before the apple, with some scholars positing the theory that the quince was the real forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. Tonight, we ll enjoy a farewell dinner together to celebrate our garden adventure. One group departure transfer to airport is included in your tour package when traveling on the suggested flights; additional transfers may be arranged for an additional fee. Trip Fees The price has been determined in accordance with currency calculations as of August Price per person based on double occupancy. $4,000 PHS Members/$4,300 non-member. Single occupancy of a room requires additional payment of $600. Tour Price includes: Hotel accommodations based on two people sharing a room with private bath, hotel service charges, tips and gratuities, taxes and porterage per itinerary. Group arrival and departure transfer for Manchester Airport when traveling on suggested flights. Ground transportation by private motor coach on touring days. Meals per itinerary. Entrance fees and local guides. Services of professional tour leader from Special Group Tours. Gratuities for driver and guides. $300 tax-deductible donation to PHS. Tour Price does not include: Airfare Airport transfers for traveling to and from Manchester Airport independent of Group Transfer. 9 TERMS & CONDITIONS (continued) Reservation and Payment A deposit of $600 per person is required at time of booking. Written confirmation will be provided upon receipt of deposit. Balance of payment will be due 90 days before departure or on or before March 10, Payment of your trip deposit will constitute your acknowledgement that you have read and agree to our full Payment Terms and Conditions. Number of Guests A maximum of 14 guests can be accommodated. A minimum of 12 guests are required to operate the tour at the quoted price. Purchase of nonrefundable services outside of tour itinerary (such as airline tickets) before minimum number of guests have registered is at the sole risk and expense of the guest. Cancellations Trip cancellation insurance is strongly recommended and may be purchased through Travel Safe or another carrier. Please note that to ensure coverage due to any pre-existing medical conditions you must purchase insurance within 15 days of your initial deposit. All cancellations must be made in writing. As noted, final payment is due 90 days prior to departure and is non-refundable. Accordingly, we strongly recommended that you purchase appropriate cancellation insurance. If you must cancel, your deposit is refundable (minus a $100 processing fee) up to 90 days prior to departure. Cancellations must be received in writing by March 10, After this date, no refund will be made unless a substitute participant is obtained. No refund for cancellations made less than 90 days prior to departure. There is no refund for any unused portion of the trip. Hotels Hotels are shown on your itinerary. PHS reserves the right to change any hotel through any circumstance---the substitute will be of equal or higher quality. Scheduled Activities Every effort will be made to provide such services as listed, but where unavoidable circumstances necessitate changes, the best substitute alternatives will be made at the discretion of PHS, or the ground operator without financial compensation to tour members. PAGE FIFTEEN TERMS & CONDITIONS (continued) Physical Capabilities Please advise PHS of any restrictions regarding diet, mobility issues or disabilities so we may plan accordingly, when possible. This tour is designed for reasonably active people. Tours can involve quite a lot of walking. Terrain may include steep inclines, cobblestones, grass, dirt paths, uneven surfaces, in areas with restricted vehicle access and up/down stairs. Each participant must be able to navigate themselves in/out of the tour vehicle. It is strongly suggested that all tour participants be in good health. Luggage Luggage, per participant, is limited to one standard size case, maximum measurement 30x18x10, plus a day pack/purse/camera bag for the daily touring day. Any case weight in excess of 40 lbs/18kg may be refused in accordance to local safety regulations. Passport It is the traveler s responsibility to ensure he/she has a valid passport and no not require a visa to their destination. Passports must be valid at least 6 months beyond your travel date to be accepted. PAGE SIXTEEN

We and our agents accept no responsibility for loss, damage, injury, accident, delay or irregularity, expense, or liability caused by the defect of any vehicle or negligence or default of any independent contractors, their employees, agents, or representatives. Nor do we accept responsibility for losses or delays arising from sickness, pilferage, labor disputes, machinery breakdown, quarantine, government restraints, war, acts of terrorism, weather conditions, or acts of God. All such losses or expenses shall be borne by the tour participant, as tour rates provided for arrangements only for the time stated and as described in this brochure. We reserve the right to substitute services, features, and hotels of similar quality without notice. We reserve the right to cancel any tour prior to departure in which case the entire payment will be refunded without further obligation on our part. We likewise reserve the right to decline to accept or retain any tour participant at any time without being under any obligation to assign any reason therefore. In the event of the exercise of this right, we shall be under no liability to such person(s) except to refund such amount as our absolute discretion deems reasonable to attribute to the uncompleted portion of the tour. No refund will be made for the unused portion of any tour unless arrangements are made in sufficient time to avoid penalties. Baggage is carried at the owner s risk entirely. It is understood that air, ship, or train tickets when issued shall constitute the sole contract between the passenger and carrier concerned. The airlines and all other transportation companies involved in this tour are not to be held responsible for any act, omission, or event during the time that the passengers are not on board their planes or conveyances. All services are subject to the laws of the country in which they are rendered. The tour participant agrees, on behalf of himself His dependents, heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns, to abide by the above conditions and to release and hold harmless the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and Special Group Tours, and any of their representatives from any and all liability for any delays, damage, loss, injury, or death occurring in relation to this tour.
