PATENT NO. 5,200,065 This system may be installed in an area smaller than a conventional drainfield. Drip dispersal is approved in many juridictions for new construction. The system is preferred for repairs due to its ability to preserve landscaping and perform in difficult sites and difficult soils. This state of the art system filters septic effluent through self cleaning filters prior to slow rate dispersal into the soil. It uses proven 25 year old drip irrigation technology in an innovative new way. System installation maximizes preservation of turf, trees, shrubs and is adaptable to irregular shaped areas. Shallow and ultra shallow tubing installation provides for maximum standoff to restrictive soils and water tables. In some conditions it may be installed over existing systems. The system is installed with a standard septic tank and pump tank, and is easily adaptable to advanced pretreatment and mound systems. The system can be more suitable for repairs in wet weather. 6 THE BULL RUN TM VALVE The Bull Run Valve is designed to split flows to septic fields or systems. In addition to the advantages of longer life and easier installation it is the most public health safe alternating device available for wastewater disposal applications. The user has absolutely no contact with wastewater due to the valve s leak-proof and external operating characteristics. The change over from one drainage field to another can be accomplished in less than a minute by simply turning the valve without digging or contact with wastewater. The Bull Run Valve is available in 4 sch 40 pvc and is suitable wherever septic disposal systems are used - in commercial, industrial, and residential applications. OPERATING THE VALVE The direction control handle should be rotated periodically to direct effluent to one or the other of two septic fields. Indicator Number MOTORIZED BULL RUN VALVE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS DIRECT BURIAL The valve is designed to be buried directly in the pipe trench requiring no concrete or hold down strap installation. The valve must be installed with the septic tank effluent line connected to the valve port marked IN. The valve ports marked OUT are connected to each half of the drainfield. ADAPTABLE TO VARIOUS PIPES Each valve port connection is a 4 schedule 40 female slip connection. The riser tube connection is a 4 schedule 40 male slip connection. Use ample pvc, abs, or multi-purpose glue to form a water-tight joint. Any of the following can be used to connect to the Valve: 1. Schedule 40 Pvc or Abs Pipe 2. Adapter Bushing (Dwv Hub To Sewer & Drain Spigot) 3. Astm 2729 (Schedule 30) Coupling 4. Bell End Of Astm 2729 (Schedule 30) Pipe SAMPLE VALVE SPECIFICATION A non-corrosive alternating valve shall be provided with 4 schedule 40 female connections. The valve plug shall be non-removable, watertight and externally operated. The valve shall be provided with an internal stop mechanism for positioning the plug, and the plug shall be non-jamming when turning from stop. There shall be no metal parts in contact with the wastewater. The inlet and outlet ports shall be clearly labeled for easy installation and the position of the valve shall be clearly indicated on the top of the valve. At no time shall the operator have contact (physical or visual) with the wastewater. The valve shall be installed in such a manner as to be easily accessible from the ground surface and operated with the standard water meter key provided. Simple instructions for use and maintenance, printed on durable material, shall be supplied along with each device. The valve shall be the Bull Run Valve. OPERATION BY WATER METER KEY A riser cap adapter, a water-tight access cap and valve key are provided. The valve should be buried at such a depth as to allow easy access and operation from the ground surface with the standard water meter key provided. PUMP SYSTEMS Effluent pumps can be used to dose the drainfield. The top of the valve is o-ring sealed and pressure tight under normal effluent pump operating conditions. Maximum pressure 25 psi. The internal plug is tapered to match the valve body seating ribs. This seating mechanism will prevent bypass under minimum head pressure conditions Page 5

8 AMERICAN DIAL-A-FLOW TM The American DIAL-A-FLOW is a new and innovative device for equally distributing flow out of distribution boxes. With the eccentrically located opening, the installer can rotate the DIAL- A-FLOW with a single flip of the wrist to balance all discharge ports for equal flow. Flow Control: The Amercian Dial-A-Flow provides a circular weir. Each outlet of the distribution box will equally discharge wastewater upon rising water level in the box. When the opening becomes submerged, the dial-a-flow becomes an orifice and further enhances equal distribution. The discharge rate of each dial-a-flow is depicted in the graph. The head condition is noted in inches above the invert of the orifice and is based on open discharge. The graph was derived from testing in a laboratory environment. Note: ASTM does not set standards for i.d. of many types of pipe. Many types of pipe are specified by o.d. and wall thickness tolerances. Make sure you check your regionally available pipe for fit prior to ordering the green or the gray. Ask for our free sample for a size check. Installation Instructions 1. Cut pipe as evenly as possible and remove shavings. 2. Insert pipe into distribution box and extend pipe 1 into box. 3. Insert dial-a-flow into pipe ends with opening to one side. (Do not use glue) Note: Proper cutting of corrugated pipe will result in dial-a-flow snapping behind one corrugation. 4. Level pipe individually or place level on orifice lip. 5. Parge pipes in concrete boxes into place with suitable material. 6. Fill with water and dial up each pipe to water surface. SPECIFICATION: DIAL-A-FLOW Provide a non-corrosive flow control device to be rotateably secured in the discharge piping of the drainfield distribution box. The device shall have an eccentrically located circular opening with a diameter of 1-15/16. This will provide a uniform seal in any rotated position. The device shall have a leveling lip extending into the box 1/8. The sealing means shall be a cylindrical extension inside the pipe with radially extending seal to initiate contact with pipe at least 3/4 inside the pipe. The device shall be provided with a gripping edge on the periphery of the end faces for easy rotation. The gripping edge shall consist of six uniform extensions and valleys for easy finger gripping. The device shall be made of low density polythylene, and one piece construction. This seal shall also be capable of snapping behind a corrugation of standard 4 corrugated pipe. 10 AMERICAN COOL GUIDE TM For NEW or REPLACEMENT Systems ~ PUMP GUIDE HOLDER ~ LOW TURBULENCE ~ COOLING COLLAR A LAMINAR FLOW COLLAR (LFC) FOR; SMALL SOLIDS EFFLUENT PUMPS Small flow wastewater collection and distribution systems more and more need pumps with high head and low flow capacity. The use of a multi-stage centerifugal pump such as traditionally used in the water well industry helps fill this need. Manufacturers of these types of pumps have used their knowledge of pumping from dirty wells to develop pumps for clear effluent pumping. The key to using these types of pumps in effluent applications is to keep the motor cool, secure it in a tank to make it easily accessible, and don t mix the residual solids in the tank during pumping. 12 DISTRIBUTION BOXES The American Distribution Box is made of high density polyethylene for years of rugged use. It is a noncorrosive, light weight and strong for easy handling. Inlet and outlet invert elevations are positioned to meet your needs and local codes. Twist and lock 4 pipe seal and plug is easily installed and fits all 4 plastic pipe. 13 AMERICAN D BOX SEALS For standard installation instructions, reference the distribution box installation instruction sheet. Due to the unique twice lock seal design, the seals may be easily adapted for increased head installations. Simply apply a mastic sealing compound to the surface of the seals. The normal turn and lock procedure to install the seal will provide enhanced sealing conditions. For smooth walled installation with increased head, select the proper seals for the box configuration. Place a bead of asphalt-based sealant where the seal lip contacts the box. Insert seals in box, turn and lock each seal. For corrugated pipe installation with increased head, select the proper seals for the box configuration. Place a bead of asphalt-based sealant where the seal lip contacts the box. Insert seals in box, turn and lock each seal. Cut corrugated pipe to receive dial-a-flow. Compress first three corrugations of pipe and insert pipe into box seal. Lock pipe in seal at first corrugation. Expand pipe again to original shape. Place a bead of sealant around the pipe and seal connection and wipe around pipe w/ finger. 14 GRADE ACCESS BOXES SAMPLING CONTAINER The American sampling container provides a simple non-corrosive method to sample wastewater. The container has inlet and outlet seals with 4 separation to allow uncontaminated sampling. This grade level box has an anti-flotation collar and a sealed and securable lid for odor control and safety. The box shall be a minimum bottom dimension of 12 X 12 and be 28 tall. The box shall be supplied with fittings to provide a 9 nominal adjustable water level from a maximum wetland depth of 16 and a minimum depth of 6. WETLAND LINER The wetland liner shall be composed of a 20 or 30 mil PVC material of the size required to cover the bottom of the wetland plus the side walls and an overlap of 3 feet for backfill securing cover. The box shall be strong, non-corrosive, lightweight and easily installed The box shall be of the dimensions shown and as manufactured by American Manufacturing Co., Inc. Manassas, Va. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS 1. Excavate trench bottoms for the inlet and outlet pipe elevations suitable to meet invert and grade elevations. 2. Hand excavate a square hole just large enough to receive the box and place pipe inverts at proper elevations. 3. Install seals and pipes. 4. Backfill to top of box. 5. Inspect and backfill to grade. GRAVEL BACKFILL 1. Hand backfill with gravel to top of box. 2. Make sure lid is on box and backfill to grade with available dirt. COMPACTABLE BACKFILL 1. Hand backfill to top of box in two layers. 2. Tamp each layer starting 8 away from box making sure you don t create excessive deflection in box sidewall. 3. Make sure lid is on box and backfill to grade with available dirt. LOCKING SEALS INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS AND SPECIFICATIONS: Provide a non-corrosive locking double sealing, low density polyethylene seal suitable to receive the specified pipe. The seal shall rotateably lock at four locations and be provided with at least two turning ears. SMOOTH WALL PIPE 1. Select the proper seals for the box configuration. 2. Insert seals in box, turn and lock each seal. 3. Place box in hole and insert pipe at least 1 inside box. CORRUGATED PIPE 1. Select the proper seals for the box configuration. 2. Insert seals in box, turn and lock each seal. 3. Place box in hole and insert pipe at least 1 inside box. 4. Cut corrugate pipe to receive dial-a-flow. 5. Recirculating Sand Filter Package design with a RATIO BOX is based on the EPA design standard. The system is designed to provide enhanced effluent quality with simple maintenance and very low operational costs. The Ratio box allows the final discharge to be elevated with the sand filter, therefore not determined by the elevation of the pump station. The filter rests during low flow, so the quality may be detracted from during restart after long rest periods. Recirculating Sand Filter Treatment package with RECIRC-VALVE is based on the EPA design standard. The system will provide enhanced effluent quality with simple maintenance and very low operational costs. The Recirc-Valve requires the final discharge to be determined by the elevation of the pump station. The filter is dosed periodically by a timer. The periodic dose is continuous so filter resting is less, and maintenance events may increase but the quality is enhanced due to the filter being continuously active. 22 AMERICAN AUTOMATIC SIPHONS SIMPLEX (ONE) An inexpensive trouble-free method of providing dosing and resting is through the use of an automatic siphon. There is an automatic dosing siphon available for a wide variety of dosing tank and drawdown depths. DUPLEX (TWO) Longer periods of rest can be provided by installing two siphons in the dosing tank and alternately discharging the tank into one-half of the field at a time. The american siphon is hydraulically designed to automatically alternate when two siphons are installed. This is accomplished with no moving parts as it relies upon the hydraulic design of the siphon. OPERATION OF AUTOMATIC SIPHON When the liquid rises in the tank above the open end of the vent pipe affects an air seal. As the liquid continues to rise air trapped in the dome and the long leg of the main trap forces water out of the trap. When the head of the liquid in the tank forces all of the long leg of the trap a quantity of air will be forced around lower bend. Liquid in the short leg of the trap will be rapidly forced out of the short leg by the up rush of air and will start the siphon action. The liquid is drawn out of the tank until air reaches the bottom of the dome which stops the siphon action. The Battery operated siphon counter has a 5 year battery life design. The counter comes in a NEMA 4X enclosure with a non-mercury differential float switch. Dual siphon counters are provided with two counters and two flow switches. The multiplex systems contain many of the same features found in the smaller systems but are typically micro-processor controlled to allow for a greater amount of flexibility. Any combination of pumps and/or zone valves may be left out of service, at the flip of a switch, without affecting the sequence. Pump and/or zone valve fail circuits allow for easy detection and alarm of failed equipment or lines. The space-saving micro-processor based control utilizes a door mounted keypad for easy, user friendly data entry and collection. Standard programs can be customized to meet your specific application. MET MULTIPLEX EQUALIZATION CONTROLS This series of controls is designed to provide flow equalization and are ideal to provide an alarm condition for excess wastewater flow. The standard MET time of day ( T series) timed dose panels are configured with a 24-hour time clock and pump run timer for each pump. The control will allow a pump (or zone) to be taken out of service without interfering with the operation of the other zones or creating nuisance alarm conditions. MT MULTIPLEX TIMED DOSE ON DEMAND CONTROLS This series of controls is designed to operate more than two pumps and dose on demand with an adjustable run timer for each pump. This type of timer control is typically used to provide a measured flow to unequal sized zones where flow equalization is not required. Each pump dose can be individually set by adjusting the pump run timers. The control will allow a pump (or zone) to be taken out of service without interfering with the operation of the other zones or creating nuisance alarm conditions.

29 ALARMS STANDARD ALARM The Tank Alarm TA1 povides a versatile means of indicating an alarm condition in a water or wastewater system. The unit has an amber Power On light to indicate it is in service and the unit will sense a high level condition or a low level condition (by just changing the floats). The alarm condition provides a red light and sound. The sound may be turned off until the alarm condition is corrected. The float switch is low voltage and U/L Listed. In the event of a pump failure, water will continue to rise in the tank and sound the alarm. The buzzer can be silenced by pushing the silence switch. This tank is provided with a pump controlled by three (3) float switches to control, by volume, each dose to be discharged. When water rises in the chamber, the lower float will rise. Water will continue to rise until the middle float rises and actuates the pump. The pumping volume may be adjusted by increasing the separation between the lower and middle float. In the event of mechanical failure, the water will continue to rise above the middle float. Upon the alarm float rising, the alarm contact will be closed. The alarm light and the audible alarm shall activate. The controller shall continue to sound the alarm until the system is serviced. The alarm test-off-normal (test-normal-silence for auto-reset alarm)switch may be turned to the off (silence) position to silence the audible portion of the alarm and turn off the top mounted light. For the pump to be automatically actuated, the pump switch must be on auto. The pump may also be operated in the manual position. 32 D -SERIES DUPLEX CONTROLS NEMA 1 - INDOOR NEMA 4X - OUTDOOR THREE FLOAT OPERATION The pump control panel shall be equipped with three float switches to control, by volume, each dose to be discharged. The dosing volume is adjustable by increasing or decreasing the distance between the Pump Off (Bottom) and Pump On (Second) float. When the water level rises high enough to overcome the Pump On float, the lead pump will activate and continue to run until the water level drops below the Pump Off float. The control will then alternate the lead pump. If the water level continues to rise and reaches the Lag Pump (Third) float, the lag pump will activate the alarm and both pumps will continue to run until the water level drops below the Pump Off float. The audio/visual alarm will be latched in until the alarm silence switch is pressed, at which time the audio alarm will be silenced. The visual alarm will remain lit until the liquid level drops below the High Level/Lag float. FOUR FLOAT OPERATION The alarm should be placed in the third position and the lag pump in the fourth position. If the water level continues to rise and reaches the High Level (Third) float, the audio/visual alarm will activate and be latched in until manually acknowledged. If the water level continues to rise and reaches the LAG (fourth) float, the lag pump shall activate and continue to run until the water level drops below the Pump Off float. When the water level rises high enough to overcome the Dose Enable (second) float and the timer is in the enable mode, the pump will activate. The pump shall remain off until the timer enters a new pump enable mode, at which time the pump shall activate (as long as the Dose Enable float is still up) and will run until the pump run timer finishes timing out. This process shall continue until the water level drops below the Dose Enable float and the pump run timer has timed out. The control system shall be equipped with a peak enable circuit to manage peak flows and excess water use. If the water level continues to rise enough to overcome the peak enable (third) float and the selector switch is on, the pump shall be activated, regardless of the standard rest time condition. The pump will continue to run until deactivated by the peak timer circuit, at which time the pump will shut off and the normal pumping cycle shall resume. If the water level continues to rise enough to overcome the High Level (fourth) float, the audio/visual alarm shall activate until silenced by pressing the Test-Normal-Silence switch to the silence position. The alarm circuit shall automatically reset when the High Level float returns to its normal position. The pump run timer shall continue to operate a full pumping cycle even when the Dose Enable float drops to the off position. This process shall repeat until the water level drops below the Dose Enable float and the pump has timed out. Should either pump fail to run when called for, the pump fail circuit shall remove the failed pump from service and activate the audio/visual alarm. The alarm shall remain latched in until manual reset. The control system shall include an alternator override switch to allow for manual selection of the lead pump if necessary, and will be setup such that it will not interfere with the normal timing functions of the system. 38 COMBINATION CONTROLS When flow equalization is used, only one timer based controller at the front of the system may be necessary since anything after that will be dosed at the equalized rate. Double time dosing and double demand dosing are also available. TIMER CONTROL SEQUENCE OF OPERATION The pump control panel shall be equipped with two float switches to control the timed doses to be discharged. When the water level rises high enough to overcome the Timer Enable (first) float the repeat cycle timer will begin timing the off period. When the off period has timed out, the pump will activate and the timer will begin timing the on period. The pump shall continue to run for the length of time as programmed on the on period. When the timer has finished timing out the on period, the pump will shut off and the timer will begin timing out the off period again. This cycle will repeat itself until the water level drops below the Timer Float. SIMPLEX SEQUENCE OF OPERATION The wastewater is discharged into a pump tank. This tank is provided with a pump controlled by three (3) float switches to control, by volume, each dose to be discharged. When water rises in the chamber, the lower float will rise. Water will continue to rise until the middle float rises and actuates the pump. The pumping volume may be adjusted by increasing the separation between the lower and middle float. ALARM OPERATION In the event of mechanical failure, the water will continue to rise. Upon the alarm float rising, an alarm contact will be closed. The alarm light and the audible alarm shall activate. The controller shall continue to sound the alarm until the system is serviced. The alarm test-off-normal (test-normal-silence for auto-reset alarm)switch may be turned to the off (silence) position to silence the audible portion of the alarm and turn off the top mounted light. For the pump to be automatically actuated, the pump switch must be on auto. The pump may also be operated in the manual position. INTEGRATED OPERATION In the event the second pump tank reaches high level and alarms, the controller will not allow the first pump to discharge in order not to overflow the second chamber. When the first tank reaches high level, the alarm will sound again. If the water level continues to rise enough to overcome the High Level (second) float, the audio/visual alarm shall activate until silenced by pressing the silence switch. The alarm circuit shall automatically reset when the High Level float returns to its normal position. 43 SOIL LOADING RATE TABLE SOIL LOADING RATE TABLE This table is based on a standard tubing spacing between runs of 2 feet on center. Therefore a typical area loading rate would be a number which is one half the linear feet loading rate number. For example, for a 1.2 gallons/l.ft./day rate would be equivalent to 0.6 gallons/ft2/day. Spacing may be changed for specific site conditions. For example; a tubing loading rate of 0.4 is an area load of 0.2. By placing the tubing 1 on center, the resulting area loading would be at 0.4, or 1/2 of the area. This can only be done with proper site and soil evaluation. The characterization of a soil based receiver site involves a systematic evaluation by trained individuals. Conditions to consider consist of a variety of topographic and soil conditions such as landscape position, slope, soil depth, depth to water table, depth to restriction, soil consistence, clay mineralogy, compaction, density, and site geometry and uniformity. Drip disposal lends itself to shallow installation. Typical depths are from 6-18, with 8-10 preferred and installations infrequent. Separation to limitations should always be maximized while maintaining a consistent depth on contour in a permeable horizon. 44 PERC-RITE SYSTEM COMPONENTS 1. The PERC-RITE DRIP SYSTEM CONTROLLER is a state-of-the-art control panel, activated by level sensing devices (standard mechanical differential float switches) located in a dosing tank downstream from the pretreatment process or processes. When activated by the rising level of effluent in the dosing tank, the controller will enable the disposal cycle. The system controller on a time clock basis will pump the effluent through the filter module and then to final drip dispersal. 2. FILTER MODULE - Disc filters, automatic control valves, solenoid activated diaphragm valves, and a flow meter are assembled in a heated enclosure and provided with a labeled wiring harness for easy connection to the control panel. 3. PUMP SYSTEM - The pump, Cool GuideTM and float switches for level indication are provided for installation into the pump tank. The pump is a turbine pump and will be suitable for most residential installations. Reference lift and distance table for pumping limits. 4. DRIPPER TUBING - The dripper tubing is pressure compensating dripperline for wastewater. The tubing delivers a nominal 0.65 gallons per hour (+/- 5% flow rate from 7 to 60 psi). The tubing functions as a turbulent flow emitter between 0 and 7 psi, ensuring that the nominal design flow is not exceeded at system start-up. The tubing is polythylene with a 120 psi pressure rating. 5. TOP FEED MANIFOLD SYSTEM - The Top Feed Manifold is located at the highest point in the drip zone and is provided with air release valves to prevent drain down of upper laterals in the zone to lower laterals in the zone, thus preventing saturation of the lower laterals after the pump shuts off. The system provides for the fastest possible pressurization of the zone and the most efficient method of providing drain down control. If the site is flat, Top Feed Manifolds may not be required. Patent No. 5,984, DRIP FIELD MATERIALS - All special drip fittings and equipment are supplied by American Manufacturing Company, Inc. including the tubing insert fittings, connectors, flex tube and non-schedule 40 PVC standard fittings. 7. STANDARD FIELD MATERIALS - All tanks, wire, standard pipe and fittings are provided by the contractor at the local site. The 1 supply and return pipes, the 1/2 pipe for installation between the top feed manifold system and the laterals and other miscellaneous PVC pipe are to be purchased locally. OPERATION The system control panel is equipped with four float switches and controls the timed doses to be discharged. The water level must be high enough to overcome the Redundant Off (Bottom) float in order for the pump to run. When the water level rises high enough to overcome the Dose Enable (second) float and the timer is in dose enable mode the cycle will initiate. The pump will activate and automatically backflush the disc filters then dose the lead zone. The pump will continue to run for the length of time as set on the pump run timer to provide a complete dose. The system will remain off until the preprogrammed off timer enters a new cycle enable mode, at which time the control will activate another cycle and dose the new lead zone (as long as the Dose Enable float is still up). This process will continue until the water level drops below the Dose Enable float and the pump run timer has timed out. Each zone will automatically receive a field flush each 50 cycles to clean the drip tubing. The control system is equipped with a peak enable circuit to manage peak flows and excess water use event. If the water level rises enough to overcome the peak enable (third) float and the peak enable selector switch is on, the system will be cycled at the peak rate. The system will continue to cycle at an increased rate until the peak enable float is deactivated at which time the system will resume the normal dosing cycle. In the event the water level continues to rise enough to overcome the High Level (fourth) float, the audio/visual alarm will be activated until silenced by pressing the Test-Normal-Silence switch to the silence position. 45 PERC-RITE DRIP DISPERSAL DESIGN This information and the tables are exerpts from the Perc-Rite Drip System Designer s Guide for the non-engineer designer. Procedures have been developed to size, layout and design a Perc-Rite Drip system using tables instead of performing calculations. When advanced system design is required the designer must reference the design manual located on our web site and complete a detailed calculation sheet to determine suitability. The Perc-Rite Drip System operates all components automatically including backflushing filters, field flushing, and timed dosing of drip tubing.
