5 Page 3 of 5 Part B 1 Purpose To provide criteria for the installation of lineside hot axle box detectors in suitable locations and at appropriate intervals. 2 Scope This Standard applies to all running lines as defined in the Sectional Appendices. 3 Definition Responsible Manager - The Manager, designated by the organisation, having responsibility for the management of operational safety of the line concerned. 4 Provision of Detectors 4.1 Lineside hot axle box detectors are provided to supplement or replace the visual observation of passing trains by lineside staff, in particular signalmen. 4.2 The Responsible Manager must consider on which routes or sections of line detectors should be provided, having regard to:- (a) the nature of the traffic (b) the proximity of any existing detectors, (c) physical characteristics of the route (e.g. long tunnels), (d) the presence of signal boxes and other locations where staff are required to observe the passage of trains. 6 Page 4 of 5 Withdrawn Document Appendix A (Code of Practice) 1. Operational Siting Criteria 1.1 Where detectors are required they should be sited at intervals of between 20 and 30 miles. 1.2 Each detector should be sited so that a train which activates it may subsequently be stopped by the display of a normal signal aspect sequence. 1.3 Detectors should not be sited at locations where trains are normally braking or are at a stand, or where conductor shoe arcing is known to occur, or where a tunnel, viaduct or other hazardous feature would exist between the detector and the detachment point. 1.4 At the initial stopping point, where the train is examined by the traincrew, a suitable walking surface should be available on both sides of the train for the traincrew to carry out the examination. The walking surface should be as long as the longest train. Consideration should be given to the suitability of the site to cater for the possibility of the emergency services being required to attend, and should not therefore involve difficult access (e.g. viaduct, deep cutting or high embankment). 1.5 Where a detaching point is provided ahead of a detector, access to this location should be available for technical examination and repair. 2. Technical Siting Criteria 2.1 The site must be on straight track and sufficiently far from curved/canted track, rail joints or pointwork to minimise the risk of false alarms. 2.2 Power supplies and transmission arrangements appropriate to the equipment should be available. 2.3 The site should have suitable access for equipment maintenance purposes. 4 R A I L T R A C K
