FIRE PREVENTION & LIFE SAFETY COMMITTEE 8/30/15 Page 3 We are still fighting the ongoing issues of sprinklers and we are coming up against contractors and builders who are saying that it is adding cost to housing when it is raising the mortgage only about thirty dollars a month. People on the eastern shore do not like the people on the western shore telling them what to do. We need to have one voice for residential sprinklers. Do to the materials and the way furnishings are made now, time to get out of the house has lessened every year. Delaware may come on board this coming year, hopefully that will happen. Continue pushing the 10 year smoke alarm and eliminate the sales of all 9-volt smoke alarms by the end of Fire deaths for the year are at 39 we are ahead of the game from last year at 38. No fire deaths in July at all. Please get out to all your county fairs and really push the fire prevention. We have 14 vacancies and we are bringing in new people all the time to fill positions. Great job in Ocean City, Good location for Risk Watch. We need to come together with One Voice and get our message out! GET OUT STAY OUT- Get that message out! BRUCE BOUCH Dover Race weekend October Could use everyone s help if you are available Unfortunately this is same weekend as National Fallen Fighters Weekend in Emmetsburg and at Dover Speed way. Risk Reduction Weekend October 17-18, This is a state wide initiative, to get out in your community. When asking for money your community will remember what you do for them. Get out and get the word out and do the work. Campus Fire Safety Month- September Governor s proclamation will be on our website by Monday.
FIRE PREVENTION & LIFE SAFETY COMMITTEE 8/30/15 Page 4 Mid Atlantic Life Safety Conference (MALSC) September 29, 2015 I have pamphlets please take and hand out. We will have more class rooms and we will have 3 separate workshops this year. I have plenty of brochures, take and handout at your firehouse. Bruce is the representative for 6 states. Hear The Beep, Where You Sleep, NFPA s October s Fire Prevention Week Campaign- October 4-10, 2015 Public Fire & Life Safety Educator Spring Seminar- March 19, 2016 Free- Fire Sprinkler Information- Look under the Fire Service tab. Speak with one voice, we are in this together. This site has a lot to offer for everyone. The realtors are not our friends, we have found this out. The fire prevention Pit box is getting a workout as it has been on display at three conferences and a couple Open Houses with more already scheduled. I will have it at the Dover races in October and then a quick trip to Ocean City for the Maryland Association of Realtors Conference. If you want the Pit Box to come out you have to make it an request, at bruce.bouch.maryland.gov. I have come into possession of 2 costumes Rover fire safety and Freddie flash light; these are from the home safety council. These are for smaller frame individuals to wear. GET OUT STAY OUT- Get that message out! BRITTANY HILL S INTERN REPORT Brittany is currently working at the state fair and apologies for not being in attendance. Brittany wants to remind everyone of the switching of domains for the Maryland Life Safety website to wix.com. If anyone has any new ideas for banners or graphic s she would love to hear from you. She is currently working on banners for the National Fire Prevention Week and the Community Risk Reduction Weekend. If anyone has any questions and/or concerns you can reach Brittany through the intern mdlifesafety@gmail.com or her personal pinky@comcast.net. LORI DENBOW & BRIDGET WEISHAAR- FIRE PREVENTION At the convention we had nine contestants and everyone did a wonderful job. Glad that I was not a judge and scoring was really close. We are looking over the Fire Prevention packet and if you
FIRE PREVENTION & LIFE SAFETY COMMITTEE 8/30/15 Page 5 think of a question and is a 2 or 3 minute question please let us know we are always looking for suggestions. Please write everything in legible handwriting. Ambassadors are required to speak if they show up and not just give fire tips, they are held to a higher standard. Applications will be sent in electronic this year. All of the girls except 2 fulfilled their obligation to Risk Watch this year. GABRIELLE KERBY- MSFA MISS MARLAND FIRE CHIEFS Sorry I could not bring my project it is being reworked. I have written a book that follows a little boy through his home and what he should and shouldn t due to stay safe. The book is being illustrated at this time and is called Fire Prevention Fred and should be out by the end of October, if anyone is interested I will give you my business card and send you copies. It will be a helpful tool when you go out into the community, which you will be able to hand out to the younger children. MADDIE MOORE-MSFA JR MISS NORTH EAST REGION Maddie stated that she is available to attend any functions and that she would be happy to help any fire departments. She has cards available and has a website. SUSAN HILTON- MSFA MISS FIRE PREVENTION Susan is from Montgomery County. She has created an ABC coloring book with fire prevention tips and messages with Fire Fighter Jay and his dog Mertle. In the back is a Bingo Board with messages and she has created a fire prevention song that the children can learn and sing, that has all the messages that we are trying to get across to the children. Susan is in the process of getting it printed. Fire Fighter jay and Mertle is taken from her own family background. ROSE PANDOLFINI Contest theme will be Tote Bags- size will be approximately 12 x14. Table themes for Fall Conference Bird Feeders, Spring Conference- Live Flowers and/or Herbs. We will continue the raffle. Nascar left over items will be sold at the MSFA executive meeting if approved.
FIRE PREVENTION & LIFE SAFETY COMMITTEE 8/30/15 Page 6 October 4-10 the message will be Do you hear the beep where you sleep? Teresa Ann Crisman will donate a Longaberger basket for the big raffle at convention that has fire trucks on it. Which will be a gift card collection all bundled into one big raffle. TERESA ANN CRISMAN Media Budget-was put in for $92, and we were told we got $25, that does not give us much to work with. Our money is mingled with all different codes and Steve is working on this. Our application for the grant was the first in this year. If you do not get your application in on time, there are no exceptions, we have deadlines and we did extend the deadline; 80 awards were given out this year. $9, Signage messages King buses back and side We do not want where we were last year with these signs; we have asked not to have certain locations again. We are not doing billboards this year. Baltimore is being hit the most because they have the most activity for fatalities. All leave for MSP and Fire departments are cancelled when the trials start. Will meet with company to find new areas for the displays and they do the entire graphic s for us. We did acquire an enclosed trailer for the pit box which really helps. We may just buy 10 year smoke alarms with our money and make kits up and say here you go! We have no money. We have a really good working relationship with Steve Ager, he has given us lots of things over the years. Unfortunately over the years we have gone over our allotted budget but no one let us know we were over and it was done unintentionally. All the TIP Sheets should be on the MSFA website and our fire prevention website so if you need anything its very simple to print or send to your local paper. We are always creating new ones and if you have an idea and would like to add anything please let Teresa know. Website header should we put a link to other websites like Risk Watch, yes per Teresa.
FIRE PREVENTION & LIFE SAFETY COMMITTEE 8/30/15 Page 7 DEBBIE GERTRELL-KEMP FABSCOM We purchased 40 bed shakers and they will be distributed to different counties. TERESA ANN CRISMAN Teresa organized a mock staging of a scenario of a child being left in the car. They had speakers and a wall of remembrance for everyone that had died. This was a press event, they timed this to show how hot it gets in the car and what actually happens, this simulation happened when it was 77 degrees outside, the inside of the car got up to 120 degrees. The speaker walked everyone through each role that was happening, from the police to the paramedic as they arrived on the scene. There were people there from over 14 countries. 15 Children were left in cars and died this year, 3 were homicides. Last year 34 children were left in cars at this same time. The message is getting out and Cyndy was able to speak at the ocean about this issue. We are more than happy to help anyone that needs to get a message out we can link it, we can help you create it and anything to help each community. DAVID REID We are all about preventing injuries out in the communities, we do a great job promoting citizen safety, but what are we doing to promote our own safety within our companies. That is what I am trying to do at my own station, I have been giving out points such as using the workout room, and anything that is helping their own well-being and promoting our safety. We would like to include the spouses and their families. We built our fire station to also help all our families so that when we are out there in the storm we will know that they are safe. TERESA ANN CRISMAN We are looking into someone coming in to help with different area s especially drugs. So if you have an idea please let us know if you can come up with any ideas. Please let me know, we will help and support anyone. The need and the resources are there. Meeting ended at 2:30 pm Respectfully submitted,
