Bashoor Welcomed everyone and was happy to that everyone could attend. Glad to be given the chance to work with such broad spectrum of professionals. If anyone has any questions or needs anything, please know his door is always open. MSFA President David Keller III Welcomed everyone and acknowledged that this has been a long year with many obstacles in our way, but we have pulled together to accomplish many things. He has been very busy traveling all over, thanks to everyone for a great year and he has had a great time visiting every corner of the state. MIEMSS Executive Director Dr. Kevin Seaman Welcomed everyone and was pleased to that everyone could attend. Dr. Seaman brought greetings on behalf of Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems and the many EMS Providers across the State of Maryland. Thank you to everyone that has attended this most valuable event and training. I thank you for allowing me to be with you today. Welcome & Update: State Fire Marshal Brian S. Geraci Easter is just not about Bunnies- I hope you take every chance you get to get the message out to the public. You should be harping on the administration in your department about how your company is getting the word out. Sprinklers We have to fight any Bill that is against sprinklers. We were very fortunate this year and were able make sure nothing passed against them this year, but they will be back next year so we cannot rest. The Delegates are really stepping up and helping. Next year we have to do the same thing. We still have a big concern for seniors and hoarding this has to be one of the main priorities for every company.

Vision 20-20: Best Practices for Local Companies Meri-K Appy President, Appy and Associates, LLC Vision 20/20 is a project of the Institution of Fire Engineers, United States Branch (IFE). The U.S. Branch was established in Vision 20/20 is led by an Executive Committee and advised by a Steering Committee of organizations and individuals with experience and expertise in all areas of fire prevention. Vision 20/20 is working to unite efforts toward a comprehensive national strategy for fire prevention. The goal is to focus activities and energy in an effective and collaborative effort to address the fire problem in the United States. Through a national forum that included more than 170 fire and stakeholder organizations, five main strategy areas were identified that represent gaps not currently given adequate attention and that offer the greatest potential benefit to all fire prevention efforts. By focusing national attention on these strategic areas, together we can achieve a more fire-safe nation. These strategic areas were published in a report, National Strategies for Fire Loss Prevention. They include: Strategy 1: Prevention Advocacy Increase advocacy for fire prevention. Strategy 2: Prevention Marketing Conduct a national fire safety education/social marketing campaign. Strategy 3: Prevention Culture Raise the importance of fire prevention within the fire service. Strategy 4: Prevention Technology Promote technology to enhance fire and life safety. Strategy 5: Prevention Codes and Standards Refine and improve the application of codes and standards that enhance public and firefighter safety and preserve community assets. A 6th strategic area was added to help fulfill work performed through a cooperative agreement with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA):

4 MSFA Fire Prevention and Life Safety Meeting Page 4 Strategy 6: Prevention Model Measurement Establish model evaluation and performance measures for fire prevention efforts and highlight models in prevention performance that others may replicate to achieve measurable, successful results. CRR- Community Risk Reduction(CRR) is a process used by fire departments to identify local risks, followed by the coordinated and strategic investment of resources to reduce their occurrence and impact. What are you going to do today, tomorrow and in the future? Why is each risk occurring and whom is it affecting? CRR is an approach that helps you: Identify dire and life safety risks Prioritize those risks Determine how to prevent or investigate risks Focus your efforts Become more of a community player A Complete Fire Prevention Strategy A community fire protection strategy should have these main components: Education outreach to increase awareness of fire dangers and encourage safe behaviors Engineering fire prevention and protection technology Economic Incentives a strategy to create a financial incentive or disincentive to enhance fire safety (e.g. tax deduction for fire sprinkler systems, fines for fire code violations, etc.) Enforcement fire safety mandates and an active, ongoing inspection process Emergency Response a primary way to mitigate damage once fires occur Together, these can and do help prevent tragic fire injury, death and loss. Aggressive and effective fire prevention efforts have been shown to have a great impact on the safety of communities. The key is creating a demand for local investment in fire prevention. The presentation allowed for the breakdown of a small community fire department vs a larger fire department and what means that or both departments can look to for support when promoting fire prevention and life safety for their community and where to turn to when support is need. The breakdown was between Bouch County and Brucetropolis outlining the services that both departments can seek provisions towards programs for their community and department. I cannot emphasize enough the importance to using what tools are available to everyone these days and having someone from your company that can use them to market your company in a way that can help recruit and help bring more funding into helping you grow. There are so many avenues such as Facebook, Twitter, Texting, LinkedIn and Broadcastify. Broadcastify has a full featured mobile web site that is supported on most Smartphone s, idevices, and tablets for Police, Fire, EMS, Rail and Marine Get the different people in your companies that are interested in Media to help with your marketing strategies. Social media is in everyone s life and it is only evolving into a more important source for you to promote your companies. Remembering When Home safety programs for senior adults Kim O Malley Delaware State Fire School Each year, millions of adults aged 65 and older fall. Falls can cause moderate to severe injuries, such as hip fractures and head traumas, and can increase the risk of early death. Fortunately, falls are a public health problem that is largely preventable. How big is the problem? One out of three older adults (those aged 65 or older) falls each year1 but less than half talk to their healthcare providers about it.

7 MSFA Fire Prevention and Life Safety Meeting Page 7 Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries. In 2013, 2.5 million nonfatal falls among older adults were treated in emergency departments and more than 734,000 of these patients were hospitalized. In 2013, the direct medical costs of falls, adjusted for inflation, were $34 billion. Who is at risk? Fall-related Deaths The death rates from falls among older men and women have risen sharply over the past decade. In 2013, about 25,500 older adults died from unintentional fall injuries. Men are more likely than women to die from a fall. After taking age into account, the fall death rate is approximately 40% higher for men than for women. Older whites are 2.7 times more likely to die from falls as their black counterparts. Rates also differ by ethnicity. Older non-hispanics have higher fatal fall rates than Hispanics. Fall Injuries People age 75 and older who fall are four to five times more likely than those age 65 to 74 to be admitted to a long-term care facility for a year or longer. Rates of fall-related fractures among older women are more than twice those for men. Over 95% of hip fractures are caused by falls. Each year, there are over 258,000 hip fractures and the rate for women is almost twice the rate for men. White women have significantly higher hip fracture rates than black women. When you go in to have your talks with this population something s to remember that are very important because you will want to hold there attention. Check what their schedule is at the location your speaking, such as lunch, coffee, or are you interrupting snack hour. You will lose your audience when they have these things on their minds. Bring handouts, snacks, drinks, they will stay and listen. Please check this website for more information for your state. What do we know about the behavior or attitudes of pre-teens or teens related to riding in cars? How to lower youth s risk of MVA injuries and death? The E strategies- Engineering Enforcement Education Encourage/Exposure Evaluation Emergency Medical Services NHTSA- FIVE TO DRIVE CAMPAIGN Never Give Up Until They Buckle Up Goals of the Be-Tween Program To teach youth ages about safely riding in vehicles in order to reduce their risk of injury or death in MVCs. To teach youth skills and information that will help them beome safer drivers later when they are ready to drive. Teach facts and consequences. Provide hands-on activities to learn and practice safety skills Provide opportunities to rehearse & practice what to say-role play. Offer pledging to bring parents and youth together to talk about passenger safety and cooperatively establish rules, rewards, and punishments. Evaluate the interventions. Challenges And Opportunities You are the # 1 influence on your teen s driving- Tips for Parents 1. Drive the way you want your teen to drive 2. Make a parent/teen agreement 3. Sign up for weekly practice tips

American Red Cross- Home Fire preparedness Campaign Chris Young Greater Chesapeake Region The biggest disaster threat in the United States isn t floods, hurricanes or tornadoes; it s fire. The American Red Cross responds to nearly 70,000 disasters a year- and the vast majority are home fires. On average, seven people die from home fires every day. Every 40 minutes, an injury from a home fire is reported. Roughly 1,000 times every day, fire departments are called to a home fire. Home structure fires cause roughly $7 Billion in direct property damage per year, or an average of more than $20,000 per fire, That s why the American Red Cross High Desert is taking part in a nationwide Home Fire Preparedness Campaign. Launched by the National Red Cross in October 2014, the campaign aims to reduce the number of home fire deaths and injuries by as much as 25 percent over the next five years. As part of the campaign, we re joining with local fire departments, community groups, and local businesses to canvass neighborhoods, teach people about fire safety, and install free smoke alarms in high-risk areas. For victims of home fires, it is often a long road to recovery. The Red Cross works with those affected and sees them through the entire process, because when a fire takes a home, it takes everything. Together, let s make ordinary items-a blanket, clothes, shoes, smoke detectors and more, extraordinary. Test Your Smoke Alarms Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a fire in half. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home inside bedrooms and sleeping areas. Check your smoke alarms once a month, if they re not working, change the batteries.

10 MSFA Fire Prevention and Life Safety Meeting Page 10 Practice Fire Drills at Home Fire experts agree that you may have as little as 2 minutes to escape a burning home before it s too late to get out. Use our Home Fire Escape Plan worksheet to plan your evacuation and practice it at least twice a year as a family. Prevent a Fire in Your Home Your home may be full of fire hazards that you aren t aware of. From your kitchen stove, to a romantic candle, to festive holiday lights, common household items can turn dangerous very quickly. Use our Home Fire Safety Checklist to reduce the risk of fire in your home. Engaging Youth in Fire Preparedness Youth often first learn about fire safety in school through fire drills and education, and are enthusiastic about bringing safety messages home. To request a presentation about fire prevention or preparedness in your child s school or extracurricular program, contact your local Red Cross chapter. We invite youth aged 7 to 18 to participate in The Paradigm Challenge, an annual competition developed in partnership with Project Paradigm that aims to generate new ideas to prevent injuries and fatalities from home fires. Project Paradigm will award cash prizes of up to $100,000 to the top 100 teams. Smoke Alarms Old & New; Tried and True Bruce Bouch Office of State Fire Marshal Already this year 20 people have died 6 in one fire. We have a Safety interactive map, that shows where smoke alarms and sprinklers have saved people or property, get me the information so we can get the information on the map and keep it updated. We were at Legislature Day in Annapolis, along with Teresa Ann Crisman, we attend to get to know everyone and get our message out and to gain support. There has only been 1 death by fire where there were working sprinklers- A man set himself on fire Sprinklers came on and the man ran from room to room trying to avoid the sprinklers- Why -because he wanted to die.

Sprinklers- Similar fire hole in roof from a kitchen fire- The family slept in there own beds that night. Fire Prevention Grants The items are already pre-selected what we are going to be handing out this year. WORKING SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES! COMMITTEE REPORTS DAVID REID- VICE CHAIR David really hopes to get more involved this year since he will not be traveling for his job as much. He is on a new committee and has exciting events coming up. They are going to be doing things differently by sending invites out to everyone and not just to the chiefs. This will all be about us. May 15,2015- Code Enforcement Residential Sprinklers There will be many displays; Scotty will be bringing a trailer down with all new bells and whistles all new stuff! 9 to 3 and Lunch will be provided; Registration will be on the MFRI web site along with all the information.

13 MSFA Fire Prevention and Life Safety Meeting Page 13 A LETTER FROM STACY HOLDEN MSFA MISS FIRE PREVENTION REPORT -March 28th, 2015 To: Presidents, Committee Chairs, and Friends of the Fire Prevention Committee From: Stacey Holden, MSFA Miss Fire Prevention Ladies, Gentleman, and Friends of the Ladies Auxiliary and the Maryland State Fireman s Association, As 2015 convention nears, I want to take the time to remind everyone to please get your fire prevention ambassador award requests submitted and your contestants for the 2015 Miss contestants applications submitted. If you or your Miss Fire Prevention contestants have any questions or concerns, please don t hesitate to contact myself, Brittany, or any of the chairs of the Miss Fire Prevention Committee. The applications for the Miss Fire Prevention Contest are located in the MSFA website under the Miss Fire Prevention section. Please note that Miss Fire Prevention applications do not need to be certified mail anymore, but need to be ed to Lori Denbow by May 1st, The contest will be held at convention on Sunday June 21st, I would like to remind, or inform some who may not be aware, of the 2015 Miss Fire Prevention Workshop. This workshop IS NOT just for Miss applicants. This workshop is for ALL fire prevention ambassadors, friends, and family. There will be guest speakers, educational resources available, and convention information for fire prevention ambassadors. The workshop is to be held on Sunday May 17th, 2015 at 11am at the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company. Please park across the street of the fire house or in the parking garage across the street. Please do not take available parking needed for emergency responders. The workshop will be located on the upstairs floor in the meeting room. We would like to see all ambassadors in attendance to not only gain new and valued knowledge but also an opportunity to meet other ambassadors. The MSFA and LAMSFA fire prevention community is one big family and we all work together to accomplish one goal. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. There is a flyer available, as well as posted in the MSFA website. If there is a representative from all counties that could please pass the message onto the reigning Fire Prevention queens in your community, this workshop is mandatory for all Queens planning on running in the contest in June at convention. The date for this workshop has been posted for several months and if there is a reason the Miss applicant cannot make the workshop, it needs to be submitted in writing to Lori Denbow and myself ASAP. Unfortunately, because the date for this workshop has been posted for some time, excusal is going to be limited. Please have 1st runner-ups attend the workshop and have them prepare for June, not only for this reason, but also in event if there is an emergency with the current applicant and the 1st runner-up is needed to compete last minute.

14 MSFA Fire Prevention and Life Safety Meeting Page 14 In addition, for the queens competing at convention 2015, we (as in Brittany and I) urge you to bring your project and present it to us in a one on one environment. The only way to become comfortable presenting is to practice practice practice and to know your material. We will be more than happy to provide you with constructive feed back if you wish for it. 15 MSFA Fire Prevention and Life Safety Meeting Page 15 BRITTNAY HILL MSFA FIRST RUNNER UP Report March 28,2015 Ladies, Gentlemen, MSFA Members, and Guests: I am extremely sorry that I could not be in attendance at our last meeting, as I was taking my state practical for my EMT class. I am very happy to say that I passed every station and am now waiting to take my National Registry written test. I am also happy to say that I am now a Certified Nursing Assistant and look forward to taking more classes for my nursing degree in the summer. In the past two months, things have been quite hectic. I want to thank everyone for inviting Stacey and I to all banquets and events and I look forward to seeing many pictures and hearing how everyone s open house goes on April 12 th. Stacey and I are currently working on our gift to the Miss Fire Preventions and planning our workshop, which will be held on May 17 th at Jarrettsville. We are very excited about this and welcome any of the Fire Prevention Ambassadors. As always, if you ever need us for anything at all, do not hesitate to contact us! 16 MSFA Fire Prevention and Life Safety Meeting Page 16 BRITTNAY HILL MSFA/OSFM Intern Report March 28, 2015 These past three months have been quite busy in assuming the role of the internship for the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Maryland State Firemen s Association Life-Safety Exchange. There have been a few technical challenges and trying to find time to work at the office when there is Wi-Fi is a hit or miss, but a lot has been accomplished. So far, I have been working on: Completely updating and organizing/creating the new mdlifesafety.org website and launching the domain. (CHECK IT OUT!!) Organizing the Pit Box (Informational Display) and starting to write a Pit Box Manual for users Creating and designing new promotional handouts/banners Researching California sprinkler legislation/how sprinklers installed in homes are a benefit Upcoming work: Starting the Smoke Alarm Initiative partnered with the Red Cross Beginning to organize Fire Prevention Grants for Convention I have very much enjoyed my three months already being housed in the Fire Marshal s office and working under DSFM Bruce Bouch, and I am looking forward to my next nine months.
