1 Spearfish Fire Department Fire Prevention Week Spearfish Fire Department held another successful Fire Prevention Week Campaign Oct Firefighters provided fire safety education to nearly 1200 students, age 2 to 11, at daycares, preschools and elementary schools. The Open House, held on Thursday, was well attended despite chilly temperatures. The national focus for 2018 is Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware fire can happen anywhere. Three simple calls to action. Look for places fire can start. Listen for the sound of the smoke alarm. Learn two ways out of each room. People take safety for granted and are not aware of the risk of fire, said Lorraine Carli, NFPA vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. Paying attention to your surroundings, looking for available exits in the event of a fire or other emergency, and taking the smoke alarm seriously if it sounds can make a potentially life-saving difference in a fire or other emergency situation. During the Open House, firefighters provided fire safety education through lessons and play. Children and adults learned how to properly use of a fire extinguisher on live fire and how to safely exit a room with closed doors. Firefighters demonstrated the use of extrication tools on a wrecked vehicle provided by Sunshine Towing. There were many door prizes to include: two youth bicycles from Walmart, fire extinguishers and smoke detectors from Shaw Fire and Safety, Fire Pro, Heisler s Hardware and Knecht Home Center. Thank you to our annual donors. Some have been contributing to this event for more than 30 years. Spearfish Fire Auxiliary provided Walking Tacos and accepted donations for their scholarship program. They also introduced Sparky, the mascot for the Spot Sparky campaign on their Facebook page. Sparky will be making his rounds to local businesses to have his photo taken and then the public is asked to guess where he is. All correct responses will be entered to win cash or gift certificates. A special thank you to Smokey Bear with the Black Hills National Forest - Northern Hills Ranger District. Smokey and his entourage partnered with the Spearfish Fire Department during the school fire safety events and made a special appearance during the Open House to greet his fans and share his wildfire prevention message. For more information about the Spearfish Fire Department, please visit our Website, Facebook, Twitter, Call or visit Station 1 during regular business hours. Please also visit the NFPA.org website for more fire safety education topics.
