2 s ANYONE (CHILD OR STAFF) discovering an outbreak of fire should, without hesitation, sound the nearest fire alarm. The function of the alarm signal is to warn every person in the building that an emergency has arisen and that Fire drill procedure should be put into operation at once. The whole building should be completely evacuated. Fire bells are situated: Outside the main office By the infant exit door By the nursery exit door In class 1 next to the undercover exit By the exit from the KS 2 area In the main hall by the doors to the playground Please note fire extinguishers are situated in strategic positions. They are regularly inspected and serviced. They are brought to the attention of all staff during INSET at the beginning of every school year. ESCAPE ROUTES All classes should leave school by the nearest fire exit and walk along the path to the rear of the school building. Classes should line up at the back of the playground (on the yellow line) in alphabetical order. Children and staff leaving school via doors onto the school driveway should walk carefully along the path to the playground gates. Office staff will have a key to open the gate and then children should line up with the other classes in the playground. Fire Wardens are: Chief Fire Warden: Michelle Speak (Headteacher) Deputy Chief Fire Warden: David Palmen (Health and Safety Officer) EYFS Fire Warden:Linzy Shaw Y1-3 Fire Warden:Kirsty Daniels Y4-6 Fire warden: David Palmen Office/ Visitors Fire Warden: Anne McGarvey Kitchen Fire Warden: Julie Barcas Their responsibility is to: a) be vigilant around their areas looking for fire hazards and reporting these to Site manager or SMT b) during evacuation Check the rooms after the class have evacuated and close doors. Direct staff who are unsure of procedures (eg supply staff) In the case of Office/ visitors and Kitchen they must report to CFW when the presence of all their members has been checked. c) Make sure that they have deputised to another member of team and that they make sure that the school calendar is up to date with their whereabouts each day as Mrs McGarvey indicates on the school diary when a fire warden is not present 2

3 FIRE REGISTERS Due to having an electronic register system which is not easily accessible during an evacuation we have a laminated fire register, in addition to the electronic one, which must be completed after the register is taken each session. The teacher crosses out the names of any children, who are not present, on the laminated list with a dry wipe pen, counts the n umber of pupils present and indicates this on the list. They then hang this up near to the exit of the classroom. In the event of an evacuation teaching staff will take the fire registers out to the assembly point in order to account for all pupils. It is essential that if a pupil arrives or leaves the building at any point during the day, that the fire register is amended by staff in their class. In the event of a class going to another part of the school eg assembly/ PE outside..the register must also go with them. It is the class teachers responsibility to ensure that in their absence supply teachers or other staff are aware of these procedures. In the event of a fire, Welfare will line up pupils in the playground and count them before the class teacher and Headteacher arrive. They must report any missing children immediately to the class teacher or Headteacher. PROCEDURE IN CASE OF A FIRE RAISE ALARM EVACUATION CALL THE FIRE BRIGADE REPORT TO ASSEMBLY POINT CALL THE ROLL TACKLE THE FIRE (IF IT IS SAFE TO DO S0) Members of staff should always conduct their pupils to the assembly point i.e. THE LARGE PLAYGROUND AT THE REAR OF THE MAIN BUILDING On hearing the alarm pupils should put their chairs under and stand behind them. When instructed by the teacher in charge of the class they should leave the classroom in single file. Collect fire registers upon exit. The person in charge of the class should be the last to leave on being certain that all persons are clear of the area. Classes will be expected to leave the building in a quiet and orderly manner so that any instructions given or cries for help can be heard. Over taking by classes or individuals is not permitted. Pupils working elsewhere in the school must NOT rejoin their class but be escorted out of the nearest exit with the adult who is accompanying them. At all times that adult needs to be mindful of where the nearest exit is. Pupils then immediately go to their class lines where they will be accounted for in the register. 3

4 With this in mind staff should be aware of where their pupils are at all times. This means that staff need to know which pupils have gone to the toilet or have taken a message etc. Special arrangements should be made to deal with children with physical or emotional needs. Children are to line up in register order.it is expected that they always line up like this so that in an emergency it is automatic. Count the number of pupils in line and compare with the number indicated on the fire register in the circle. Then call the register one child at a time and identify any missing pupils. Teachers should report to the Chief Fire Warden (Headteacher or her deputies if not present) as soon as their register is compete. Information needed is: a) are all pupils and staff present? b) If not, where were they last seen? Teachers and support staff to remain with their class until the all clear is given by the CFW. Fire Marshalls will be on duty during an evacuation. They will report to the Chief Fire Warden (Headteacher) who will then inform the fire brigade of any missing persons. Please note that fire drills are timed. The stop watch is not stopped until all teachers and firewardens have reported to the CFW that everyone is accounted for. The Headteacher or Office Manager will call the Fire Brigade with a mobile phone from the playground. There should be no delay in making this call. [In the case of these people not being in school the responsibility would lie with senior teachers]. There are procedures in place for deputy fire wardens to be in place if the Fire warden is not in the building. All pupils should be silent and orderly throughout the drill. NO PERSON IS ALLOWED TO RETURN TO SCHOOL UNTIL THE ALL CLEAR IS GIVEN BY THE MOST SENIOR MEMBER OF STAFF PRESENT ATTACKING THE FIRE A teacher s first and overriding duty in case of fire is, of course, to look after the children. No attempt should be made to fight the fire until their safety has been ensured. Small fires may be tackled by the staff using the method appropriate to the type of fire. (Staff to receive regular training on use of fire fighting equipment in line with LA requirements) Fire drills will be carried out at least once a term, at pre-arranged times and at other times without prior warning. 4

5 AFTER THE EVACUATION The evacuation will be evaluated each time. All staff are to report any concerns they have about how the procedure went to the Senior Management Team. Results of evaluation will be reported back to staff. Teaching staff are expected to address any resulting issues with their own pupils. Irresponsible behaviour by pupils, which causes a delay to the evacuation process, will be dealt with seriously in line with the school s Behaviour Policy. GENERAL INFORMATION NB: Total evacuation is ordered of all adults and children every time the alarm is sounded. Can all staff note that electrical items owned by a member of staff should not be used in school. All electrical items in school are regularly PAT tested to ensure they are safe. NEW INTAKE OF PUPILS/STAFF As soon as it is practicable after the start of a school term, all new entrants, staff and pupils should be made aware of our fire procedures, shown the alarm points and instructed in the fire routine procedure. Teacher Trainees are also to be given full instruction about evacuation procedures. Students on work experience are the responsibility of school and as such they should be treated as a Asmall pupil. It is staffs responsibility to talk to them about what to do in the case of a fire. RECORDS A record of fire drills, alarm tests and the testing of fire equipment is kept in the in main office. Any defects and the action taken to remedy such defect should be entered in the record and a repeat fire drill carried out later in term to monitor improvements. The record should be available for inspection when required A report of a test fire drill should be made at each termly to Governors by the Headteacher. Michelle Speak June
