4 Miscellaneous Leland Township Fire Rescue February 2018 Monthly Report Page 3 of 3 On January 3 rd assisted Cedar Area Fire Department on a Chimney Fire on Lime Lake. On January 14 th we had a call for a possible house fire on S. Main Street in Leland. Upon arrival the on-duty crew investigated and determined the homeowner had a fire that was smoldering in her attic. The fire had burned away portions of two trusses in the attic and was burning some of the insulation. Crews worked hard to remove the insulation and then contain and suppress the fire. The cause of the fire is believed to be electrical in nature. KTF&R was assisted by Suttons Bay and Cedar Area Fire Departments. Conducted our first department-wide goal-setting session in quite a while. Those results are attached to this document. Lieutenant Chris Herman and the on duty staff members continued to plow and salt our fire stations, library, and water points as needed. Received 25 Smoke Alarms from Kidde through a grant our Community Risk Reduction Coordinator Bill Parker had applied for prior to taking the fire chief s job in Blair Township. Although February was a quiet month call volume-wise we were busy increasing our knowledge base through various trainings: o Lieutenant Greg Johnson and Firefighter Kathryn Walters were enrolled in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Inspector I program. They will be done with the course in March and will take the national test. o Lieutenant Chris Herman is now certified as a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus Maintenance Technician after passing the course. He can now perform routine maintenance and a majority of repairs in-house. o Firefighter Russell Korson continued his studies to become a Paramedic. o Probationary Firefighter Rachel Zemanek continued her Firefighter I/II course. o Firefighter Nate Gooden and Zemanek continued their studies to become Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians. o Chief Besson continued his studies to become a certified through the state s Professional Emergency Manager (PEM) program.
