4 RISK ASSESSMENT - FIRE SAFETY HAZARD RISK CONTROL MEASURES TIMESCALE Locked fire escape Staff and visitors are unable to evacuate the premises in the event of a fire or other emergency. High Ensure School/Leisure Centre has in place a procedure to ensure that all external fire escape doors are tested and coaches to test also at Venue. Immediate Blocked fire escape routes Creates a bottle-neck for staff evacuating the premises and slows the speed of evacuation down. High Discuss with school/ leisure centre and arrange for rubbish/storage to be cleared from corridors etc. Immediate Obstacles present a trip hazard and risk of injury. High As above Short term Staff fire evacuation practice necessary Staff unaware of what to do in the event of a fire. Medium Check understanding of emergency procedure with staff and school/leisure centre. Short term Regulatory breach of legislation (this would only be a problem in the event of an inspection or complaint). Low Emergency procedure to be discussed as staff training / Coaches checklist Non compliant signage Word-only signage may not be understood by foreigners. Regulatory breach of safety legislation (this would only be a problem in the event of an inspection or complaint). Low Low Discuss with school/ leisure centre of ordering new signage with pictogram of running man. Medium term Emergency Procedures & Evacuation Plan 4! of 10!

5 FIRE SAFETY POLICY 1. General statement We are a responsible employer and take our fire safety duties seriously. For this reason we have formulated this policy to help us comply with our legal obligations to staff and visitors under the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997 (as amended). These include the provision of a safe place of work where fire safety risks are minimised. Due to its importance, this fire safety policy also forms part of the company s overall health and safety policy. 2. Employees duties All employees have a duty to take reasonable steps to ensure that they do not place themselves or others at risk of harm. They are also expected to co-operate fully with us in complying with any procedures that we may introduce to protect the safety and well-being of our staff and visitors. 3. Communication We will keep staff informed of any changes that are made to our fire safety procedures and fire risk assessment. 4. Procedures We have introduced the following procedures in order to maintain high standards of fire safety. a fire risk assessment has been undertaken which will be reviewed annually. However, more frequent reviews will occur if there are changes that will impact on its effectiveness. These may include alterations to the premises or new work processes the fire evacuation procedures by schools/leisure centres will be practiced annually training will be provided, as necessary, to any staff given extra fire safety responsibilities, such as fire marshals it is our policy that coaching staff should not use fire extinguishers unless trained. all new members of staff and temporary employees will be provided with induction training on how to raise the alarm and the available escape routes (delete if not relevant) all escape routes will be clearly signposted and kept free of obstructions at all times by the School/ Leisure Centre all fire-related equipment will be regularly serviced and maintained by the School/Leisure Centre. If any employee notices defective or missing equipment, they must report it to a manager alarm systems will be tested by schools/leisure centres regularly. Staff will be told when a test is scheduled. any other safety systems will be checked by schools/leisure centres regularly to ensure correct operation, where necessary, e.g. emergency lighting this policy forms part of employees conditions of employment. 7 FIRST AID AT WORK POLICY 1. General statement It is our policy to ensure that appropriate first aid arrangements are in place for our staff and any visitors to our premises. This includes providing sufficiently trained employees for our business needs and maintaining an adequate supply of first aid equipment. It also involves providing enough information to staff to enable first aid assistance to be sought during normal working hours. Where work is regularly undertaken outside these hours, then adequate first aid cover will be provided. 2. The legal position Our duty to provide first aid at work is governed by the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations These require us to carry out a risk assessment in order to determine what first aid facilities and personnel are necessary to meet the needs of our business. We are also required to review this assessment periodically to ensure that current provision is adequate. In order to comply with these Regulations, our assessment has considered a number of factors, including the following: size of the business type of business past history of accidents proximity of business location to emergency medical services needs of travelling and/or lone workers first aid cover in times of sickness or annual leave. (Add or delete as necessary.) 3. Responsibilities of first aid personnel In order to carry out their duties effectively, first aid personnel have the following duties and responsibilities. Emergency First-aiders are responsible for: responding promptly to all requests for assistance summoning further help if necessary looking after the casualty until recovery has taken place or further medical assistance has arrived reporting details of any treatment provided. Looking after the travel first aid equipment and ensuring that schools also have a first aid kit nearby. It is the responsibility of the Senior Coach to know and inform other coaches where this is. Emergency Procedures & Evacuation Plan 7! of 10!

8 Appointed persons are responsible for: in the absence of a first-aider, taking charge when a person has been injured or falls ill calling an ambulance where necessary (Add or delete as necessary.) 4. Procedures The following are general first aid related procedures to be followed by all staff: if you are aware that an employee/child has been taken ill, or has had an accident, James Adams for assistance. You should not attempt to give first aid treatment yourself unless emergency aid qualified. no employee should use their private car to transport a casualty to hospital. If an ambulance is not required, then a taxi is to be used if you need to access a first aid kit for personal use, do not remove it from its designated place any loss or damage to first aid equipment must be reported to James Adams (Director) if a first aid kit is poorly stocked, this should be reported to James Adams (Director) (Add or delete as necessary.) 5. Staff training All senior staff undertaking first aid duties will be given emergency first aid training in accordance with current legal requirements. This means that a first-aider will attend an emergency first aid course. Where necessary, all line managers will be expected to organise shifts and rosters to enable staff to attend. We will do our best to ensure that sufficient notice of both initial training courses and any refreshers are given to managers to assist with this planning. 6. Information for employees We acknowledge that first aid arrangements will only operate efficiently where they are understood, both by employees and others who may be working on our premises. These include part-time and temporary staff. For this reason, information on how to summon first aid is provided for all new staff. This and further information is also included in our staff handbook. Information on the current first-aider/appointed person will be provided on staff notice boards. These can be found in the following locations (insert details). SportyPeople Office First aid boxes can be found in the following areas: (insert details).
