February 2019 Fire Notes
Positioning the turntable as close to under the wires as you can, makes the wires less off an obstacle.
"Teach yourself to pay attention to the weight of the door you're controlling when doing a VES. A solid core door that feels heavy when you shut it buys you more time from the fire than a lightweight hollow core door." ~ Bob Pressler, FDNY, The Firemanship Conference 2017
"I m not good enough to spend my down time playing video games at the firehouse." - Firefighter John Spera
The Effect Spinning Fog Nozzle Teeth have on Fire and Gasses Spinning teeth draw products into the nozzle, whereas fixed teeth push them away. If you use combination nozzles consider fixed teeth.
Mentoring is the Future of Fire Service Training and Leadership - make it personal. Unless we intervene with an established department-wide mentoring process for new hires and newly promoted members, our next generation of leaders may never hear of Bret Tarver, Greg Pickard and Eric Wallace, Scott Tanksley, Corey Ankum and Edward Stringer, Mark Langvardt, John Nance, Stanley Wilson, Charleston 9, Worcester 6, or the hundreds of others who made the ultimate sacrifice. They will have no idea what happened at Hackensack Ford, 750 Adams, Black Sunday, Father s Day 2001, Coconut Grove Nightclub, Iroquois Theater, Beverly Hills Supper Club, or a number of other significant fire events and the valuable lessons they taught us. Without mentorship, this generation may never be influenced by the wisdom of Lloyd Layman, Tom Brennan s Random Thoughts, Frank Brannigan s The Ol Professor, Chief Ray Downey, Andy Fredericks' lessons on engine company operations, or two of my personal role models, Lieutenant Pete Lund, and the godfather of my generation s fire service, Chief Alan Brunacini. - The Functional Fire Company

Worming or Fingers When smoke is pushing through the brick mortar. If you don t have fire showing yet, but have worming that s giving you a good sign how well the fire is developed, how much pressure is built up (sometimes can hear a slight whistle). Or if you do have fire showing this is a very good indication that the building is on its way to a significant collapse.
How any times have we heard, What has the fire service done for me? So lets flip the question. Instead of what has the fire service done for you ask what have you done for the fire service? Then you might find out what the fire service has done for you.
Realistic Training Matters Not all victims will be found in the middle of an empty training center floor. If you come up to a bed and just pat the covers you will probably miss what you are there for. Our training should always mimic real life. If you come up to a bed grab everything on it and drag it off in your lap if there is a kid in it you will notice the weight difference.
Work to Create Disciples Not Worshippers. If followers talk more about where you've been and what you've done than where they are and where they're going, it's time to pause and reflect. Do you inspire us to be a better version of ourselves or do you make us wish we were you?
In Type 5 wood frame construction exposure protection is critical. If 2nd line isn t needed to back up 1st in fire building then take into most serious exposure
Smoke is the #1 killer of fire victims and firefighters. Smoke is flammable and contributes to rapid fire spread and development. Smoke obscures vision which slows fire attack and searches. The ENGINE is tasked with stopping it The TRUCK is tasked with removing it Vent for life
Remember you work in one of few jobs in the world where in a life threatening moment, a mother will hand their child over to you, a total stranger, without question and with total trust. Earn that trust. Maintain that trust. Act accordingly.
Becoming a firefighter and taking the oath, makes other people's problems our problems. The job has inherent dangerous and we must push the envelope. Train and learn the skills necessary.
How do we gain work place experience? If your department isn t going to fires and you aren t getting experience, then you need to be training to make up for it. You should be getting dirty, dragging lines, throwing ladders, searching and rescuing each other. Test your skills. Push yourself and your crew. The training should be repetitive, relevant and realistic. The life you save may not be yours, but then again it might Your training and experience should prepare you to operate in a manner that YOU would want the fire department to operate for YOUR family.
How do YOU improve your Front Porch Times Taking back time for THEM Morning routine: The whole crew masks up for time (Under 20 seconds) Tape 3 of the 4 straps and add a pull loop to the one adjustable strap. With gloves on, the added ridged pull loop makes it easier to feel the one adjustable strap.
For all firefighters out there, every Tesla in the front trunk has a red cable tagged with a firefighter helmet, cutting this cable disconnects all the high voltage lines in the vehicle, and renders it motionless. The solar roof is expected a similar disconnect will be implemented that in some way reduced risk of electrocution
Key In Knob Locks Easy to defeat without an officers or A tool. Place the forks of the bar and push out... Need additional space? Place another bar or axe behind it.
Tones drop right now, it s your address! No time to charge the TIC! No time to charge the radio! No time to get your gear out of your locker and not be able to find the gloves someone borrowed and didn t return! No time to fuel the saw and check the chain! No time to set your equipment up to save time, as that sets you up to save lives! Do it now before the tones drop, when they do it could be your address. When Seconds Count, we count seconds!
Leaders today seem to be missing the mark on holding people accountable, setting the example, and mentorship! When we become the leaders of an organization, we have to do the unpopular thing for the betterment of the department! We will no longer sit idly by and watch people get promoted to leadership positions and ruin the fire service because of their actions/in actions and mediocrity!!!!
