Exhibitions, Events and Visits Future Events and Exhibitions Publications Training from BRE Global Meetings LPCB/BRE Global News Eurosafe UK: LPCB welcomes the advent of a new trade body. On Thursday 24 February, representatives of the British safe industry attended a crowded meeting at the headquarters of The Security Institute near Nuneaton. The purpose was to inaugurate a new trade body, Eurosafe UK. The meeting was introduced by Bo Blumdahl, President of Eurosafe, the parent organisation in mainland Europe. He explained that whilst confidence in European standards for testing and certifying cash safes had been high at first, it had become seriously eroded as the EU expanded, allowing a flood of products certified by test houses that were not party to the original agreements signed by members of the European Fire & Security Group (EFSG). The aims and objectives of Eurosafe UK were outlined. Members will abide by a code of conduct stating that they promote safes tested by LPCB/BRE Global in the UK, or overseas test houses affiliated to the EFSG or those certified by the European Certification Board. Security (ECB.S). Carol Atkinson, Chief Executive of BRE Global (incorporating LPCB) said: LPCB very much welcomes the formation of this new trade body with a focus for promoting the use of independently tested, properly certificated safes. For more information please Mike Palmer, Chairman of Eurosafe UK, at info@mikepalmerconsultancy.co.uk For Red Book listings of LPCB approved safes click here Selecting passive fire protection contractors? The LPCB approved installer scheme goes from strength to strength The LPCB third party approval scheme for Passive Fire Protection Installers LPS Requirements for the LPCB Approval and listing of companies installing or applying passive fire protection products now has over thirty companies listed in the LPCB Red Book. The scheme gives main contractors assurance that LPCB Red Book listed passive fire protection installers use the correct passive fire protection product for the application, have traceability of the product s manufacture and carry out installation according to the manufacturer s instructions. This then gives confidence that the completed fire protection will deliver the required performance and the Regulatory Authorities (such as Building Control), specifiers, building owners and occupiers can be assured that the installation meets the design criteria. All LPCB Red Book listed companies approved under the LPS 1531 scheme are assessed for their office systems and procedures, site management and product selection verification. This process is backed up by regular site inspections by LPCB - installations are checked for standards of workmanship, application and installation of the product to the manufacturer s instructions, including correct environmental conditions. All listed companies are required to label their work, produce marked up drawings as required and record quality assurance inspection records for each installation. This information is included in the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals so the owner/occupier has a record of where the work was carried out and what products were used. This ensures any future maintenance, alterations or additions to the passive fire protection can be undertaken in the same professional manner using compatible products to those already installed. Specifiers should look for the LPCB mark, check the online listings for LPS 1531, at
2 Page 2 of 6 In the News Care home fined 22,000 for serious breaches of fire safety law The owner and manager of a care home in Newcastle have pleaded guilty to breaching the Fire Safety Order, after a fire at the property. In an inspection that followed a fire at the property on 18 August 2009, fire safety officers found there had been a failure to carry out a suitable risk assessment, a lack of compartmentation to prevent fire spread and an unsafe external escape route due to building work. They also found the floors, walls and ceilings to be inadequately maintained. The manager of the care home was also fined 2,000 plus 400 costs after pleading guilty to one charge relating to a locked fire exit. Officers found the fire exit nailed shut with a padlock fitted. A dozen of the apartments are reported to have been destroyed and another dozen severely damaged by smoke. The buildings are largely made of wood, which fire-fighters commented added to the problem, since the structure itself was combustible. The hotels were not fitted with sprinklers. Senior Ministers from Middle Eastern and South American countries were amongst the many representatives from Government, Police, Military and major corporations worldwide that visited the LPCB stand to discuss LPCB's standards and the scope of high security products listed in the Red Book. Not only did these discussions confirm the broadening scope of application of LPCB approved security products in the UK they also confirmed the emerging export opportunities to countries around the world faced with the threat of organised crime and terrorism. We were delighted to see a large number of companies approved by LPCB, exhibiting a wide range of high security products including locking equipment, doors, shutters, enclosures, fencing systems and asset tracking equipment.
