8 IT-Security Safes Interior equipment of the Modular Safe The Lampertz Modular Safe provides a full security range for 19 -racks. The security solutions for which Lampertz is renowned, like separate air-conditioning, independent power supply, efficient fire-alarm and extinguishing systems, are as a matter of course and may be integrated as required. Air-conditioning systems Precision air-conditioning systems control temperatures and humidity within defined limit values thus creating the stable ambient conditions demanded by electronic equipment and therefore preventing costly downtimes. Lampertz Early Fire Detection - EFD The highly sensitive Lampertz early fire detection systems use active optical smoke-extraction systems. They guarantee the earliest possible detection and alarms already in the pyrolysis phase. Fire-alarm and extinguishing system (DET-AC Plus) The fire-alarm and extinguishing system reduces the risk of downtimes for cabinets housing electronics to a minimum in the case of fire. The cabinet fireextinguishing system recognizes and extinguishes fire quickly and reliably right at its source, i.e. directly in the equipment to be protected. Network-capable monitoring (Computer Multi- Control - CMC-TC) Successful monitoring is usually inconspicuous but extremely effective. Access control is one of the most important factors in security. It is registered throughout the network using the CMC-TC. The system sounds the alarm in the case of attempted unauthorized access. The CMC-TC continually monitors and detects the status of the modular safe (e.g. interior temperature or possible smoke development). Uninterrupted power supplies (Power Modular Concept - PMC) PM 12 UPS constitute one of the most important components in security because vital data may be lost in the case of power failures. Besides bridging power failures, UPS also improve the characteristics and quality of the power supply. They prevent, for example, power peaks and drops. Modular power distribution (Power System Module - PSM) Ever increasing power requirements for modern IT-structures demand complex systems of power distribution. 9 Modular Safe LMS 9.3 Air Lampertz conditioning Modulsafe Lampertz LMS 9.3 Moduar SP Safe LMS 9.3 Hardware components accommodated in the modular safe need an optimum process climate. For this purpose, the air-conditioning for Lampertz LMS 9.3 modular safe may be adapted to performance requirements ranging between 2.4 and 12 kw, and thus eliminate the specific heat dissipation losses inside the safe. A variety of air-conditioning solutions adapted to the respective building s demands may be employed. Compact air-conditioning for the LMS 9.3 The principle of compact air-conditioning is simple but effective: the air-conditioning unit s inside circulation system is installed inside the safe on the side wall of the safe, the external unit is positioned on the service door. Both circulation systems are interconnected by flexible coolant tubes fitted through a cable duct in the door. The warm air from the servers is extracted by the fans inside the rear of the safe while the cooled air is blown admitted in front of the 19 - level. All air-conditioning systems are split designs to enable the cooling circulation systems inside and outside the safe to be hermetically separated. Thus creating protection against smoke for both the air-conditioning unit as well as the entire safe. The compact split air-conditioning unit is suitable for use in rooms already possessing air-conditioning or sufficient ventilation and that make low or no demands on admissible noise levels. Outdoor air-conditioning for the LMS 9.3 In the outdoor version, the air-conditioner s interior circulation system is installed inside the safe on the side element of the safe, the external unit is weatherproof and therefore may be fitted on the outside of the building. The cooling and control pipes are installed by a refrigeration systems engineer. In the same way as with the compact air-conditioning unit, the warm air from the servers is extracted from the rear of the safe and the cooled air is blown in front of the 19 - level. Benefits of the outdoor model: the waste heat is discharged into the open air. This makes ventilation or air-conditioning in the room unnecessary. Also, the operating noises are moved outside the building thus allowing this modular safe to be installed in offices. High-Performance Cooling modular, scalable, efficient Despite a dramatic rise in climate control requirements, cooling practice in many companies has changed little in decades. Traditional room temperature control concepts soon reach their limitations. The consequence: High on-going operating costs, low levels of efficiency, a lack of investment confidence, and reduced operational reliability. The modular configuration and scalability of the climate control innovation Liquid Cooling Package (LCP) help to minimise investment costs and maximise investment confidence, while providing sufficient scope for future extension. Liquid cooling package The liquid cooling package (LCP) may be integrated inside the modular safe combined with a 600 mm wide 19 - rack. The LCP possesses a modular design, consisting of three air-water heat exchangers: Thus the cooling performance may be increased responding to growing requirements within 4 kw steps (with a lead water temperature of 15 C, flow rate of 15 litres/minute). This creates a continuous air-conditioning cycle: the heat radiation from the servers is extracted over the entire height at the rear of the safe and discharged through the air-water heat exchanger to a cold-water network or cooler. The cooled air is then blown again in front of the 19 level at temperatures ranging between 22 and 25 C. The LCP is an airtight system that does not set up any requirements regarding the room s air-conditioning. Cover plates The front of the 19 - rack must be completely closed off to ensure optimum air circulation and air-conditioning inside the modular safe. The cover plates listed are for closing off unoccupied rack units. Lampertz 9

10 UPS system / PSM UPS systems PMC-Power Modular Concept, single-phase The UPS is distinguished by the use of double-conversion technology. Double-conversion technology provides the basis for an optimum supply voltage to all connected loads. This means that the Rittal PMC 12 UPS is ideally suited to all applications in the IT environment, as well as for all other requirements such as medical technology, automation technology, plant control etc. A scalable autonomy of up to 2 h at 100 % load ensures a broad spectrum of applications. The environmentally-friendly extinguishing gas, which is not hazardous to humans, is stored in a small, light container. This innovation allows gas storage on the limited space of one height unit, only without the need for large gas cylinders. In the initial fire phase (pyrolysis phase), the smallest smoke particles can be detected by the active smoke extraction system. Even in systems with a high air conditioning capacity output, there is enough time to pass on an optically signal via the LCD display on the front of the housing. The DET-AC Plus is automatically detected via a connected CMC-TC. With it, alarms can be passed on via or even to a mobile phone. 12 DET-AC / EFD DET-AC Plus Slave The DET-AC Plus Slave system is used to extinguish several network cabinets or security safes that have been linked. The slave system always works in conjunction with the DET-AC Plus system (which already contains the extinguishing gas for three square metres) or with the EFD Plus system (no extinguishing gas storage). Air is continuously sucked-in (detection) from all cabinets through the master unit (DET-AC Plus or EFD). Up to four slave units can be connected up to a master unit. The extinguishing gas is stored in the slave unit. Extinguishing is triggered by the master unit. Lampertz Early Fire Detection EFD Plus In addition to the complete fire detection and extinguishing system, there is now an early fire detection system for the 19 - rack. The EFD is a quick, effective and inexpensive way of securing company processes and thus preventing damage occurring. Inside the EFD housing, a fan generates a vacuum through which air is sucked in from the surveillance area via a pipe system containing several small boreholes. Internal sensors are monitoring the extracted air for thermal additives which occur during the pyrolysis phase. In this manner the danger of fire can be detected before a smouldering fire can develop. If the threshold value is exceeded, then the system will set off an alarm. These systems increasingly have to be protected against failure and other threats because the federal state and federal authorities are being integrated more and more electronically. However, the existing premises no longer met the increased availability and security demands of the district. Because a refurbishment of the building was already planned, a security upgrade of the data centre was considered at the same time. Initial situation: The complete IT of the district authorities was accommodated in an unprotected room in conventional construction. The walls and the access door therefore provided no protection against physical threats. The proper security demand of the IT systems in the room against fire and the temperatures resulting from this and against increased humidity was not guaranteed. The district authorities commissioned Lampertz GmbH & Co. KG with working out a complete solution concept, which was to consider the following key points: Physical security Air-Conditioning Internal fire load Power supply system Monitoring Solution: The Lampertz data centre specialists designed a customized data centre which meets all the above-listed requirements. The physical all-round protection is guaranteed by linking two Lampertz modular safes LMS 9.3. A third modular safe as a single safe is used for the back-up area. The modular safes are a Lampertz complete solution because each module contain a complete, individually configurable infrastructure package with climatisation solution, uninterrupted power supply, early fire detection and fire-alarm and extinguishing systems as well as monitoring and 19 racks. Furthermore, the modular safes are scalable and can be installed while the hardware is running. Thanks to the modularity, they can easily be expanded and moved at any time. As moveables, the modular safes can be amortized within five to ten years. SKE Group consolidates and increases data centre security The company SKE Facility Management GmbH, an enterprise of Vinci Construction, is active in the fields of facility management and construction. In order to improve the utilisation of synergies and to consolidate IT systems and structures, it was intended to merge both data centres of the SKE group. Task The special challenge of the project was the high very necessary climatisation power of 38 kw. Due to the constructional situation and the fact that the SKE data centre had only been built a short time before, a room-in-room solution was out of the question. Apart from the climatisation problem, particular attention had to be paid to sufficient fire protection. Lampertz solution On site, the experts analyzed the possibilities for the protection of the IT systems and decided on interlinking five Lampertz modular safes LMS 9.3. It was possible to optimally integrate the modular construction of the modular safes with a 19 rack into the existing premises so that no construction work at all was necessary. Thanks to the patented construction, the server racks did not even have to be switched off for the alteration because the modular safes can be installed while the hardware is running. The required climitisation of 50 kw was realised by rack-based Liquid Cooling Packages (LCP) from Rittal. Two redundant cold water aggregates are available for cooling water so that a permanent cooling of the servers is guaranteed. Regarding fire protection, SKE wanted to play safe. The system-tested modular safes provide protection against fire in F90 quality rating and additionally maintain the limit values critical to IT of ΔT<50 K and relative humidity <85% for more than 30 minutes. Furthermore, the Lampertz modular safes also provide burglary protection in accordance with WK 2 and protection against dust as well as water in accordance with IP56. In order to always remain connected to the power supply, an emergency power supply linked to the UPS via a diesel aggregate. This made it possible to upgrade the newly merged data centres of the SKE Group fast and efficiently with additional security quality ratings. Lampertz 15
