1 No.714 SIREN DRIVER MODULE WITH No.713 BLASTER SPEAKER,,---, GENERAL INFORMATION: The No. 714 Blaster Driver Module is designed to control power to the No. 713 Blaster Speaker (both together comprise the No. 715 Blaster Electronic Siren). The No may be turned on from a control instrument having 6 to IZV. DC _ alarm output terminals (DO NOT use controls with unfiltered rectified outputs, such as the Nos. 221, 330, 331 and 332 Combination Burglar/Fire Controls). Actua I power for the No. 713 speaker(s) is provided to the No. 714 directly from the control instrument s power source or a separate power supply, if desired (6-l8V. DC) Speaker sound volume is dependent on the voltage used for the speaker circuit. The sound may be warbling or two-tone depending on which of the activating signal inputs of the No. 714 is tripped. The warble/two-tone rate is adjustable as is the pitch of the sound. One or two No: 713 Speakers may be connected to the No. 714 Blaster Driver Module for ful I sound output. More speakers (up to 8 total in series/parallel), however, may be connected to one No. 714, with decreased sound from each speaker. OPERATION: When an a.larm occurs, the.signal (6 to 12 V. DC) from the alarm output terminals of the control instrument will turn on the circuitry in the No. 714 Driver Module so that power for the speaker(s) will enter the No. 714 and be sent out to the No. 713 Speaker(s) as warbling or two-tone power. No speaker power current will flow, however, until an alarm condition occurs.,rs \ / When the alarm signal is removed from the No. 714 (upon control panel bell.cutoff or restore ) the speaker power will stop flowing and the speaker(s) will si lence. The speaker power voltage supplied to terminals 3 and 4 (see Diagram 31 of the No. 714 may be 6 to I8 V. DC (maximum) obtained from any of the following sources: I. The control instrument s 6 or l2v. DC power supply. a. If a control panel s 6V. rechargeable power source is being used to power the speakers, and it is desired to obtain even greater sound output, supplementary 6V. rechargeable power (e.g.: No. 493) may be placed in series with the speaker power input wiring to the No. 714 to boost the resu I ti ng sound leve I of the speakers. b. If the panel s power source is a 6V. dry battery, it may be supplemented as described above by up to l2v. of dry battery. 2. A separate rechargeable power supply, such as the No. 493 (6V.I Battery Pack or No or -50 (12V.I Power Supply. 3. A separate A.?. rectified 6 or l2v. supply. The No Energy Pack (12V.I his recorrpnended for close to maximum speaker sound output. For standby, the control s power supply may be connected to the No s STANDBY terminals ( if the control has a 6V. power supply, less sound output will be available while on standby), 24

2 Note : If a No is used, only I speaker should be directly connected to the No. 714 (or no more than 4 in series/parallel). See WIRING Steps 2 and Up to l8v. (maximum) of dry (non-rechargeable) batteries. Caution: If l8v. is used, it must be entirely from dry cell batteries. Do not use rechargeablesupplies in series to obtain l8v. as this may result in more than the maximum permissible l8v. being supplied to the speakers. The activating (alarm) voltage that trips the No. 714 may be 6 to l2v. DC (but NOT unfiltered full wave rectified). It does not have to match the voltage that is used for the speaker(s). For example: a 6V. DC a I arm output may be used to trip the No. 714 and a IZV. DC power supply may be used to drive the No. 713 Speaker(s) via the No Caution: As in the above example, if a 6V. activating (alarm) signal is used to trigger a higher voltage speaker power, the 6V. signal should originate from a rechargeab.le source (not a dry cel l battery) to minimize the possibility of No. 714 circuitry problems that may result if the activating voltage drops below 5 volts while higher voltage speaker power is present. If two alarm s.ignals reach the No. 714 simultaneously, the signal connected to the warble input w i I I override the two-tone signal. Thus, if the speakers are to sound for burglary or fire, the fire signal-should be connected to warble and the burglary signal should be connected to two-tone to insure that the fire signal takes priority. INSTALLATlON: For ease of installation, the No. 714 Driver Module has a housing which permits it to be conveniently mounted in the cabinet of the alarm control panel with which it is used. The No. 714 s upper edge is provided with a lip that can be slipped over the upper edge of the cabinet without interfering with the ability of the cabinet s cover to close and lock. See Diagram 3. WIRING: See Diagrams I through 3. Three leads with quick disconnect terminals are packaged with the No. 714 for aj-taching in the field to the connection posts on the unit. Field wiring must be extended from these leads to the control panel alarm output terminals as indicated in Diagram 3. Wire nuts, solderless crimp Wire Splices (Ademco No or solder and tape are recommended. A barrier terminal strip is provided for the speaker power and speaker connections. Proceed with wiring the No. 714 for: I. Activating Signal(s): Refer to the OPERATIONS sections for activating signal recommendations. Connect quick d i sconnect I eads to the posts indicated in Diagram 3 for warble and/or two-tone sound as desired and extend each to the alarm output terminals of the control instrument(s). OBSERVE POLARITY. See Note under Step 3. 25

3 2. Speaker(s): Connect leads from terminals I and 2 (polarity not important on these terminals) to the speaker(s) in accordance with the following: a. One speaker connected across terminals I and 2 will receive full spea ker voltage. See Diagram I,!etter (a). r I II&-- 13 I.. ->bf- - DIAGRAM 1: b. Two speakers connected in parallel across terminals I and 2 will each receive full speaker voltage for twice the sound of one speaker alone. See Diagram I, letter (b). Caution: Do not connect more than two speakers in parallel in this mzner. (Note : If No Energy Pack is used, only one speaker should be connected.) c. Two speakers may be connected in series (or up to eight in series/ parallel) across terminals I and 2. Each howler will receive onehalf speaker voltage and will sound somewhat quieter than at full voltage. See Diagram 2. (Note : If No Energy Pack is used, no more than 4 speakers should be connected in series/parallel.) Such an arrangement lends itself to spreading sound evenly over an area or into areas that might not be reached by one or two speakers. 3. Speaker Power Supply: Connect leads from terminals 3 and 4 to the control instrument power supply (or separate power source if desired) as shown in Diagram 3. Refer to the OPERATION section for speaker power source recommendations. Warble/Two-Tone Rate may be changed by adjusting the indicated (see Diagram 3) potentiometer with a screwdriver: clockwise to INCREASE rate (faster), counterclockwise to DECREASE rate (slower) 2. 6 TROUBLESHOOTING Nos. 713 & 714 a TROUBLE : 1. UPON ACTIVATION OF ALARM, NO SOUND IS HEARD FROM THE ATTACHED SIREN. PROBABLE CAUSE A. Defective blaster siren (remove blaster from terminals 1 and 2 of No. 714; place ohmmeter across wires to blaster; look for low resistance readi ng; li,sten for clicks in blaster as test leads are touched to speaker wires). B. Blown fuse on No. 714 module, or on alarm control panel if so equipped. C. Disconnected or broken wires between power source (e.g. alarm control panel) and terminals 3 and 4 of No. 714 (check for desired voltage at these terminals at all times). D. Disconnected or broken activating wi res from control panel to f I y- ing leads of No E. Polarity reversed to terminals 3 and 4 of No. 714 (accompanied by blown fuse). F. Unfiltered DC output coming from control panel is not triggering the No. 714 (a smooth, filtered DC output must come from the control panel alarm output terminals and be applied to the flying leads of No. 714). DO NOT use controls with unfiltered rzified outputs, such as Nos. 221, 229, 330, 331 and 332. G. A weak6 volt dry cell is being used to supply the alarm (activating) signal to the No. 714 (a 6 volt DC activating signal controlling higher voltage speaker power must originate from a rechargeable (not dry) battery source. REMEDY A. Replace blaster siren if no clicks are heard and the ohmmeter i ndi - cates infinity. B. Replace fuse with No. 90-9, 5 ampere fuse. Replace panel fuse if required, with the proper type. C. Check wiring. Repair as needed. D. Check wiring. See I-nsta I lation Instructions. Repa ir as needed. E. Check polarity (+ from power source to terminal 4 of No. 714; - from power source to terminal 3). F. Replace power supply with a source of voltage that is properly rectified and filtered (use No. 492 or No. 493 or equivalent. G. Replace dry cell with a suitable rechargeable battery source (e.g. No. 492 or 493 or equivalent).

7 TROUBLE: 2. FIRE AND BURGLARY TONES ARE REVERSED DURING ALARM CONDITION. PROBABLE CAUSE REMEDY i?),,, Activating signals from control panel are reversed to No. 714 module. Check wiring against Installation diagram. (NOTE: In the event of. simul,taneous burglary and fire signals the warbling tone wi I I override the two-tone signal if both are present. It is therefore recommended that the fire alarm output signal be connected to the warbling tone input of the No. 714). TROUBLE : 3. THE RATE AND PITCH OF THE SOUND OUTPUT FROM THE SPEAKER(S) IS UNACCEPTABLE. PROBABLE CAUSE Warble tone rate and pitch adjustment are not satisfactory. REMEDY Adjust rate and pitch as per the Installation Instructions. 30
