1 Introduction Overview The ExiCheck accessory connects to your Analyte Excite or Analyte G2 excimer gas system and provides a way to automatically exchange the ArF gas, even when the laser ablation system is turned off. The ATL excimer laser heads used by Teledyne Photon Machines use a gas mixture of argon and fluorine. The fluorine component is reactive and degrades over time and requires replacement in the laser head after either two weeks or when the energy output degrades. Stale gas causes a lot of down time as the system has to be re-passivated by saturating the internal surfaces with fluorine. Stale gas also causes lower laser energy output, greater pulse-topulse variability, and eventually decreased crater quality. Using the ExiCheck accessory maintains optimal laser performance without wasting gas or consuming operator time. Automatic gas exchange is especially useful when the laser is not being used for long periods of time, to maintain passivation in the laser cavity and internal tubing lines. The gas exchange is performed in full compliance with the procedure specified by ATL, including verification of adequate gas pressure and internal verification that the flow of gas is shut off during the evacuation part of the procedure. This version of the system supports two modes: Manual Gas Exchange Gas exchange is initiated from the front panel of the control unit Scheduled Gas Exchange Gas is exchanged at a regular interval, programmed from the front panel of the control unit Power and control signals to the laser pass through the ExiCheck control unit so that the ExiCheck can control the laser to perform gas exchanges while remaining transparent to any computer program which is controlling the laser. 5

Calculation of Exchange Intervals The date and time of the ExiCheck s next scheduled gas exchange is calculated by: 1) Adding the number of days specified in the Conduct exchange every days setting to the date of the last completed exchange. 2) After that day is reached, waiting until the specified At time: : :00 time. 3) If the user cancels the scheduled exchange before it completes, the ExiCheck will wait until the next day at the At time: : :00 time to conduct a gas exchange. 4) If the laser is in use at the scheduled exchange time, the ExiCheck will wait until the next day at the At time: : :00 time to conduct a gas exchange. NOTE Manually exchanging the gas will reset the days counter. Therefore, if you had it set to do a gas exchange every 7 days at 1500 (3:00pm), and you did a 13

Chapter 2: Using the ExiCheck Accessory manual gas exchange on Wednesday at 1430, the next gas exchange the ExiCheck would perform would be on the following Wednesday at If an exchange is overdue (because you reduced the exchange interval, or because the exchange was cancelled or the laser was in use), an exchange will be performed when the clock reaches the specified time of day, then exchanges will be performed at the specified interval. Starting the Laser Ablation System 1 If the ExiCheck accessory is not already turned on, turn it on. 2 Wait for the ExiCheck accessory to display the home screen (showing the date of the last laser fill and the date of the next scheduled fill). 3 Start the laser ablation system as normal (turn on the laser key switch, if needed, and start Chromium or the ATL software). Shutting Down the Laser Ablation System The shutdown procedure for the laser ablation system is not changed by the presence of the ExiCheck accessory. Do not turn the ExiCheck accessory off or turn off the main power switch to the laser ablation system unless it is really necessary. Shutting Down the ExiCheck Accessory NOTE The ExiCheck accessory is designed to be left on, even when the laser is not in use. It is only necessary to shut down the ExiCheck accessory for maintenance activities such as disconnecting a gas line. 1 Insert the key and turn the key switch on the front of the control unit OFF (0). 15 Chapter 2: Using the ExiCheck Accessory 3 Shut off the ArF gas cylinder s main valve. Remember that your laboratory safety policy may also require lockout/tagout procedures when working with pressurized gases. Changing the Gas Cylinders 1 Leave the ExiCheck system ON. 2 Change the cylinders as prescribed in the ATL manual, using the ATL Laser Control Software. 3 During the next gas exchange, check that the pressure is approximately 7 bar. 15

Chapter 2: Using the ExiCheck Accessory This page is intentionally blank. 16

3 Maintaining the ExiCheck Accessory Routine maintenance of the laser ablation system consists of verifying the performance of each component. There are no components which require periodic replacement. Checking the Gas Pressure The main valve on the premix gas cylinder should normally remain open. Periodically check the secondary pressure regulator s pressure reading. This should be checked about once every three months and verified to be approximately 7 bar. This will ensure that the ExiCheck can always complete a gas exchange. If the pressure is low, adjust the secondary pressure by a maximum of a quarter turn and then verify that it does not read more than 7.2 bar during an entire gas exchange. Updating the Firmware 1 Obtain the newest firmware from Teledyne Photon Machines. The firmware update file will be named ExiCheck-Update.tgz regardless of the version number. 2 Copy the firmware update file to the root level (in other words, not inside any folder) of a USB storage device. 3 Turn off the ExiCheck accessory and plug the USB storage device into one of the two USB ports on the back of the ExiCheck control unit. 4 Turn on the ExiCheck and wait for it to boot up. This will take approximately one minute. 17

Chapter 3: Maintaining the ExiCheck Accessory 5 Once the ExiCheck is booted up, the ExiCheck will show the status of the firmware installation. 6 Once it is finished, the ExiCheck will ask you to remove the USB storage device. Once it is removed, the ExiCheck will restart and run the new firmware. 7 To check the results of the update, connect the USB storage device to a computer and examine the appropriate text file. When the update is complete, three new files will be saved onto the USB storage device. The first two files are ExiCheck Firmware Update.txt and ExiCheck Firmware Update Windows Format.txt. These files confirm that the update was successful or list any failures, errors, or warnings that were encountered. The two files contain the same information, but with different line formats for Mac/Linux/Unix and Windows. The other file is ExiCheck-Update Diagnostic Data.tgz. 8 Please the ExiCheck-Update Diagnostic Data.tgz file to cetacservice@teledyne.com. The information in this file will help Teledyne Photon Machines improve the ExiCheck and verify that the ExiCheck is working properly. Changing the Battery The ExiCheck control unit includes a battery which is used to maintain the clock when power is removed from the system. This lithium battery can maintain the clock for a minimum of 10 years when the ExiCheck system is powered off. This battery is not user replaceable. Contact Teledyne CETAC Technologies if you believe the battery needs to be replaced. 18
